OLove God. Love People.

Make A Difference.

Our 2020 vision:  Impacting 1000 families with the life changing love of Jesus.

As we live out our mission, by the end of 2020 Good Samaritan will regularly impact 1000 families by making a difference in our local community and world.  We will do

this by connecting them to the life changing love of Jesus and by creating more room on our campus through the addition of a sanctuary and the expansion of our academy.

FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Friends and Family of Good Samaritan,

If any of you have ever taken on a big home or yard improvement project you know the excitement of the initial idea and the enthusiasm as you start the project. Many of you also know how that initial excitement can fade when it runs into the reality of all the hard work and cost that will be incurred to get the project done.

Several years ago, my children experienced this first hand. During Spring Break they wanted to get a couple of turtles and thought we should build a mini-pond for them in the backyard.  They identified the perfect place and researched what it would take to care for turtles and what it would take to create a pond for them. They were so excited about the idea they even said they would pitch in significantly for the cost of the project. Enthusiasm ran high as they looked at examples of ponds others had created and as they identified turtles that would do well in the Las Vegas climate. But then the hard work began. Digging a hole for the pond, pricing the cost of the supplies, such as pumps and filters, and hauling rocks and bricks into position. Three days into the project it was not nearly as exciting as when it was started.

During dinner of that third night as conversation turned to the progress of the pond, two somewhat dispirited kids expressed that maybe it was time to throw in the towel. Amy and I let them talk through their frustrations that eventually led them to deciding to see the project through to the end. During the course of this discussion my daughter said something that stuck with me. “Dad” she said, “if we quit now those two turtles we are going to buy will not have a home.”

I wonder if that was not part of the internal dialogue Jesus went through that night in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he struggled out loud“Father, if you are willing, take this cup of suffering from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”  Luke 22:42

After three years of ministry, the prospect of being the sacrificial lamb for a sinful world must have seemed far less appealing to his human nature than when he started. The upcoming torture and agony daunting even for the son of God. Yet when he uttered those words, “Not my will but yours be done”, you get the sense that there is an underlying message that the project needed to be completed. That is confirmed with Jesus uttering those last words from the cross “It is Finished”.Without the cross, without the sacrifice there would be no resurrection; no redemption; no way for a weary world to come home. What Jesus had started could not have been finished.

Jesus also said in Matthew 11:28 “Come to me all you are are weary and heavy burdened, and I will give you rest.”Even though Jesus has not walked this planet for over 2000 years, his dying and resurrection make it possible for us to find our home, our comfort, our rest in a God that our sinfulness had separated us from. Separated us from, that is, until Jesus built a bridge back to God by completing his project and becoming the final sacrifice that would save us and a weary world so desperately in need of finding its way home.

And so my friends, this month we celebrate Easter. We celebrate that Jesus did not quit on us, even when the going got tough and the cost of finishing the project seemed so very high. We celebrate the Son of God; risen from the tomb “just as he said he would”. We celebrate the fact that we have a home. Not just an eternal home of light, love, and joy but also a home here—today. A place to go where we can find peace, hope, purpose, and love in the arms of our God. The same God who sent His one and only son to die and rise again so that the project that was started some 30 years earlier with such enthusiasm could finally be completed.

CHRIST IS RISEN, HE IS RISEN INDEED!!!

Honored to be Your Pastor,Don Lorfing

New Sermon Series Beginning after Easter Stop walking around like a zombie. Learn to live more fully, engaging in meaningful ways with God as well as with those around you.  Our post-Easter sermon series “The Walking Dead” will focus on what Jesus said and taught after he had defeated death and risen from the grave. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, the Bible has much to tell us regarding his interactions with his disciples as well as many others. Those interactions have much to teach us about how we can live our lives more fully. We will also spend some time talking about heaven and what Jesus taught us about life after death.A great sermon series to invite a neighbor or a friend to experience. Be sure and join us for the 7 week sermon series, “The Walking Dead”

“Life is for Giving” Many Americans live with two opposite feelings. On one hand, they want to experience meaning andpurpose in their lives. On the other hand, they often feel that they are running on empty. In his classic novel, Les Miserables, Victor Hugo gives us a clue on one way to deal with that second feeling. In his story a church bishop befriends Jean Valjean, who had just escaped from prison, and gives him lodging. Valjean repays that kindness by stealing the bishop’s valuable silver and  candlesticks. When the bishop catches him in the act, he knocks the bishop on the head and runs off with the valuables. Jean Valjean is caught by the police and brought back to the bishop’s residence. The police magistrate then questions Valjean in the bishop’s presence. As the interrogation progresses, Valjean seems headed for jail.  Surprisingly the bishop shows great mercy to Jean and offers a plausible reason for why the candlesticks are missing, saying that he gave them to Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean is amazed. When he and the bishop are alone, he says, “Why did you do that? You know I am guilty.”  The bishop replies, “Life is for giving.”Why do churches receive an offering in their worship services? Some people say, “Because the church needs the money.” That is only part of the answer. Even if a wealthy benefactor fully underwrote our congregation’s expenses, we would still need to provide people with the opportunity to give an offering in our worship  services. Weekly giving teaches us—and reminds us because we keep forgetting—that life is fuller when we learn to live it generously.  Victor Hugo is right. Life is for giving.
