the Washington, DC area . Particularly noteworthy were the detacluuenCsinitiative and vigorous deployment of escort procedures and communicationactions during the Anti-Vietnam War demonstrations of November 1969, May1970, and 'May Day 1971. During these periods, more than 350 sepnrateconvoyswere escorted over 48,000 miles of congested urban and suburban roadwayswithout incident or accident. This efficient completion of mission provided thevaluable backup forces so urgently needed by the local civil law enforcementauthorities of the Nation's Capital . On a routine daily basis, the detachmentpatrolled the Naval District Washington, DC area, rendering assistance tomilitary personnel of all ranks and services, and apprehending those personson unauthorized leave. The distinctive accomplishments of the Armed ForcesPolice Detachment Washington, DC reflected great credit upon the individualmembers of the detnclv::ent and were in keeping with the highest traditions ofthe United Stares Anned Forces .VI__MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION . 1.
