Enterovirus D68 appears to have hit its peakBy ASHLEY SLOBODA
An enterovirus that hasled to increases in illnessesamong children – and is affect-ing those with asthma mostseverely – is declining in Illi-nois, according to the latestinformation from the Centersfor Disease Control and Pre-vention.
Illinois is among 34 statesthat reported low or decliningactivity of enterovirus D68-like illness for the week of Oct.12 to 18. Only one state – Mis-sissippi – reported increasingactivity, and eight reported el-
evated activity. The CDC also reported the
virus has been detected insamples from at least eight pa-tients who died and had sub-mitted specimens for testing.Investigations are ongoing.
While enterovirus D68 isn’tnew – it has been around forat least 50 years – there hadbeen relatively few incidentsof it until this year, Dr. JeffreyLoughead of Cadence Healthsaid.
“Illinois seems to be harderhit than most,” he said.
Children seem to be most af-fected by enterovirus D68, pos-sibly because adults developed
immunity from other entero-viruses, which are “extremelycommon,” Loughead said.
Mild symptoms includefever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and body and mus-cle aches, according to theCDC. It lists severe symptomsas wheezing and difficultybreathing.
“Kids with a history of asth-ma can be severely affected,”Loughead said.
From July to September, the number of asthma patientsCentral DuPage Hospital ad-mitted equaled more than 60percent of the patients admit-ted for all of 2013, Loughead
said. The cases were believedto be related to enterovirusD68, he said, noting a patient’svirus type is only identified incertain cases.
Juanita Gryfinski, healthservices department chair forSt. Charles School District 303,said parents have been “veryconcerned” about enterovirusD68, but it has been eclipsed bythe Ebola scare.
It’s important to know pre-ventative measures for entero-virus D68 are the same mea-sures that should be taken toavoid other illnesses – washhands often and keep childrenhome when they’re sick, Gry-
finski said.For children who are
wheezing and don’t have ahistory of wheezing, Loug-head said parents should takethem to a pediatrician or theemergency room. Kids with ahistory of wheezing should beseen if they aren’t respondingto their therapy, he said.
But, he said, the peakseemed to hit soon after theschool year started. A lot ofkids got sick and have now re-covered, he said, so when an-other child at school gets sick, the virus affects fewer peopleand isn’t passed around asreadily.

Looking ahead to Halloween, some partygoersmay look to spice up their costumes with coloredcontacts, fashion lenses, and “circle” lensesthat add decorative touches to the iris. These“costume contact lenses” (also known as cosmeticor decorative contact lenses) may seem fun andharmless, but they pose potentially serious dangersto the eyes of unsuspecting wearers. Just becausedecorative contacts can be purchased over-the-counter or on the Internet does not mean that theydo not require the same level of care or considerationas a standard contact lens. The fact is that it is illegalto sell colored contact lenses without a prescriptionin this country, and there is no such thing as “onesize fits all” contact lenses.
P.S. Non-prescription costume contacts can causecuts and open sores on the surface of the eyes thatcan lead to potentially blinding and painful bacterialinfections. These can require corneal transplants andeven cause permanent vision loss.

GENEVA – Aldermen act-ing as the Committee of theWhole on Oct. 27 tabled a pro-posed economic developmentincentive policy for Geneva soits provisions could be amend-ed.
The revamped policy is tobe presented at the Tuesday,Nov. 11, meeting, officials said.

Overcoming a threateninganxiety disorder:
Vanessa King, 26, is a student at ElginCommunity College, with plans to starta career in art therapy. Talking with hertoday it’s hard to picture her at onetime virtually bedridden for monthsbecause of severe anxiety.
“My life was definitely on hold,”she says.
King remembers missing a lot ofschool as a child because her anxietyled to frequent stomach aches andvomiting. This pattern subsided duringher teen years, but the extremeanxiety returned. By 2008 she wassuffering from a full-blown panicdisorder with agoraphobia — intensefear that she would be stuck some-where “unsafe” while having severeanxiety symptoms.
“During part of that year I didn’t goanywhere,” says King. “I was terrifiedof my symptoms.”
Symptoms of a panic attack mightinclude an accelerated heart rate, lightheadedness, dizziness, faintnessand nausea, says M. JoannWright, Ph.D.,
director of the Anxiety Program atLinden Oaks at Edward. “And anxietycan worsen over time if untreated.Avoidance (of what you fear) pulls youinto more avoidance,” says Dr. Wright.
Late in 2010 King was referred to theLinden Oaks Anxiety Program, whichinvolves 3-1/2 hours of therapy daily,Monday through Friday, typically forabout three weeks. Group and indi-vidual sessions use Acceptance andCommitment Therapy (ACT) to helppatients commit to pursuing what theywant in their lives. They learn ways toaccept and manage the symptomsthat are getting in their way.
“ACT literally gave me my life back,”says King. “It’s in your face andencourages you to push your limits. You see that feeling anxious is notgoing to kill you.”
King is now married and a full-timestudent. She also volunteers to shareher story with current participants inthe Linden Oaks Anxiety Program.“I still have a few panic attacks but Idon’t stop what I’m doing when thathappens,” she says. “I just take somedeep breaths and ride through it.”
Earlier this year Linden Oaks earnedThe Joint Commission’s Gold Sealof Approval and Disease-SpecificCertification for commitmentto excellence in anxiety care.Linden Oaks is the first healthcareorganization in the country toreceive such recognition.

the proposed policy.Economic Development Di-
rector Ellen Divita said someincentives, as from the tax in-crement finance district, legal-ly require a funding gap.
But 2nd Ward AldermanDonald Cummings objected, saying he did not want the re-quirement to stop a businessfrom coming to the city.
“I can imagine a businesscoming to us and saying, ‘I
have the money to do whatI want to do, and I’d like abreak,’” Cummings said. “Icould see myself reacting pos-itively to that.”
But Divita asked why thecity would help a business thatdid not need the money.
“These are public dollars,”Divita said. “I don’t think itwould be fair to existing busi-nesses.”
But 5th Ward AldermanTom Simonian said the cityshould not have a policy thatmight turn away potential de-velopment.

The St. Charles Park District’s No School Day field trips are synchro-nized with St. Charles School District 303’s academic calendar. Thefull- or half-day trips are for children ages 5 to 12.
Kids can have fun duringNo School Day field trips
By CAROL [email protected]
No. School. Today. If you’rea child, those are three of thesweetest words in the Englishlanguage. Ifyou’re a work-ing parent, not so much.
Findingan activityto occupy achild for all,or part of, the work day is oneof a parent’s biggest challengeson any day of the year, but onthose days when school is notin session, it becomes an evenbigger obstacle.
Luckily, the St. CharlesPark District’s No SchoolDay field trips are the perfectanswer to a perplexed parent’sproblem. Synchronized with St.Charles School District 303’s ac-ademic calendar, these full- orhalf-day trips for children ages5 to 12 offer safe and satisfyingactivities that can take studentsfrom the footlights of a famous
play to the heights of an indoorclimbing wall.
“This program enables par-ents to provide their childrenwith experiences that theyoften don’t have the time to puttogether,” said Cheryl Riley, recreation supervisor for BakerStation and Teen & FamilyPrograms. “It’s hard to take aday off work to go to a museumin the city or an amusementarcade in one of the neighbor-ing suburbs.”
For the upcoming Thanks-giving and Christmas holidayseason breaks, No School Daytrips will venture to popularplaces, such as Milwaukee’sDiscovery World interactivescience and technology muse-um, North Climbing Wall rockclimbing gym in Crystal Lakeand Nickel City, an entertain-ment arcade in Northbrook.
And for the first time thisyear, Riley is offering parentsand students a choice of activi-ties Wednesday, Nov. 26. Thosewho want an active, fun-filledday playing games such as

laser tag or indoor mini-golf,can opt for the No School Daytrip to the Enchanted Castlein Lombard. But for those whoare looking for a more “super-califragilisticexpialidocious”kind of experience, a trip toAurora’s Paramount Theatreto see the high-flying musicalbased on the popular chil-dren’s books by P. L. Traversand made famous by the 1964Disney film could be just theticket.
“We wanted to give parentsthe option of sending theirchildren to such a culturalactivity,” Riley said. “This isa perfect way to kick off theholiday season.”
Students do not need to beregistered in the Park Dis-trict’s Baker Station before-and after-school care pro-grams in order to participatein the No School Day”fieldtrips; but, as with regularBaker Station program-ming, extended before- andafter-trip care is availablebeginning as early as 7:30a.m. and running until 6 p.m.to coordinate with parents’working schedules.
Trips for winter breaksin 2015 are already on thebooks, and parents and chil-dren can look forward to ex-cursions, such as Ring SideSports in Gurnee, BrunswickZone in Algonquin and thePeggy Notebaert NatureMuseum and Chicago SportsMuseum in Chicago. Earlyregistration is encouraged, although the Park Districtwill try to accommodate par-ticipants right up to the dayof the program.
Transportation, chaper-oned supervision and admis-sion costs are included inthe registration fee for eachindividual field trip, and mosttrips include extra perks, suchas game tokens. Some eveninclude free pizza lunch, whileothers request children bringtheir own sack lunches.
Whatever the extras mightbe, the basics are given: Kidshave a great time on their dayaway from school, and parentsgo to work knowing that theirchild is having the kind of dayin which memories are made.

Batavia makes list ofhappiest cities in state
By ERIC [email protected]
BATAVIA – Batavia Cham-ber of Commerce ExecutiveDirector Holly Deitchman hasalways regarded Batavia to bea happy place to live.
So she was not surprisedthe city was named the third-happiest city in Illinois in astudy done by www.creditdon-key.com, a credit card compar-ison and financial educationwebsite.
Batavia was ranked on sev-en criteria: restaurants, crimerate, commute, departuretime, income, divorce rate and
housing. Cities were narrowedto those with a population of25,000 or more.
“It makes sense,” Deitch-man said. “Look at the amaz-ing restaurants we have. Andthe amount of crime we haveis minimal.”
Batavia was the only city inKane County to make the listof 10 happiest cities. Molinewas named the happiest cityin the state.
“I think it speaks well to thecommon causes that the com-munity has worked so hard formany years to bolster Bataviaand its image,” Batavia MayorJeff Schielke said in reacting

to the news. “And it’s obvious-ly beginning to pay off.”
According to the study, Bata-via “scores the second-best rank-ing for income, with residentsearning in the neighborhood of$90,000. Divorce is relatively in-frequent and so is violent crime. There are many places to social-ize and grab a bite, like Aliano’sRistorante and Tusk Thai.”
The study states the percent-age of divorced residents in Bat-
avia is 4 percent among malesand 11.1 percent among females.According to the study, the oddsof being the victim of a violentcrime in Batavia is 1 in 797.3.
Data was obtained from theU.S. Census Bureau and theFBI Uniform Crime Reports.
This isn’t the first time Bat-avia has been honored. In 2009,CNNMoney.com named Bata-via as one of the top 100 bestsmall towns in America.
Batavia has been named the third-happiest city in Illinois, accordingto credit card comparison and financial education website www.creditdonkey.com. The designation was based on several criteria,

New cupcake shop showcases sweet treats
By ERIC [email protected]
ST. CHARLES – Those with a sweettooth will find a variety of temptingtreats at Smallcakes: A Cupcakery of St.Charles, which recently opened at 117W. Main St., Suite 120, in downtown St.Charles.
Hinckley resident Tina Wackerlinand her husband, Eric, opened the fran-chise business on Sept. 12.
“I’ve always loved to bake,” TinaWackerlin said. “If I had a choice ofcooking a seven-course meal and sevendifferent desserts, I’d pick the des-serts.”
The St. Charles store is the secondSmallcakes to open in Illinois. JillWackerlin-Watson, a cousin of TinaWackerlin’s husband, opened a Small-cakes store in March at 115 E. OgdenAve. in Naperville.
The cupcakes are made fresh daily.Smallcakes offers 15 signature flavors, along with two different daily specialflavors.
Cupcake lovers also might noticesomething different about the cupcakesat Smallcakes.
“They’re a larger cupcake than thenormal-sized cupcake,” she said.
To fill the demand, Wackerlin andher other employees start baking at 5 or6 a.m. and continue through early eve-ning. The two most popular cupcakesat the store are the caramel crunchcupcake – chocolate cake with caramelfrosting, topped with sea salt and pret-zels – and the wedding cake cupcake,Wackerlin said.
“I like the caramel crunch cupcakeas well,” she said. “I like caramel. Theblack tuxedo cupcake, which is almondfrosting with chocolate cake, is also agood one.”
Smallcakes employee Emily Whit-taker prefers the lemon drop cupcake.
“It’s really light and fresh, even for acupcake,” she said.
The store is trying to take advantageof the nightlife in downtown St. Charlesby staying open later. Smallcakes isopen from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondaysthrough Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.Fridays and Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 8p.m. Sundays.
“There is a lot of foot traffic in thisarea and a lot of restaurants behindus,” Wackerlin said. “People stop in
after they go to dinner, or to a sportingevent. I feel if we weren’t open thatlate, that we’d be missing out on a lot ofopportunities.”
The store offers both indoor andoutdoor seating. Wackerlin also hascatered different events.
She has an idea why cupcakes re-main popular.
“A lot of people don’t want to order awhole cake, and cupcakes give you va-riety,” she said. “So, if you are havinga party with 25 people, you can havedifferent flavors, versus one flavor of acake.”
Whittaker said she believes cup-cakes also remain popular because oftheir nostalgia factor.
“They bring you back to your child-hood,” Whittaker said. “They also bringpeople together. People try each other’scupcakes all the time.”
That includes professionals workingin offices, Wackerlin said.
“They will buy six or 12 for an office, and then they will all share them,”
she said. “They don’t stand around theoffice water cooler any more; they arestanding over someone’s desk samplingall the different cupcakes,” she said.
Besides cupcakes, the store sellsother treats, such as sugar cookies, fudge, brownies, cake pops, caramelapples and birthday cakes. In addition,it sells hot chocolate, coffee, pop, milkand water.
“The franchise only does cupcakes, but I added the treats,” Wackerlin said.“Before we purchased the franchise, Iasked if we could sell treats, because Iwanted to sell cookies and pretzels andfudge and stuff like that. Not all thefranchise stores do that.”
The store plans to make Christmascookies for the upcoming holiday sea-son and is gearing up for the ElectricLight Parade that will march throughdowntown St. Charles on Saturday,Nov. 29.
For information, call the store at630-587-2253 or at visit Smallcakes’Facebook page.

The long-awaited vision of ScottHawley has been impressively unfurledat Law Estate Wines. Perched highabove Peachy Canyon in Paso Robles,California, Law has it all.
The exterior architecture is visual-ly stunning. Built with straight linesreminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright,it houses a posh tasting room withbeautiful panoramic views. A rust redbuilding houses a technically perfectbarrel room.
The vineyards are planted between1,600 and 1,900 feet. They have unlimitedsun exposure, are sustainably farmedand are in high density, small-lot blocks.Given ideal terroir and vast resources,Hawley has meticulously mapped outevery detail. It shows in the stellar quali-ty of Law’s wines.
Winemaker spotlightA mist fell from the ceiling as a brief
mechanical hiss filled the perfectlyhumidified chilly air of the Law barrelroom. A shiver fell over me as cellarmaster Orion Stang poured barrel sam-ples of what will be an impressive 2011vintage.
No expense was spared at Law; it isa creative laboratory for Hawley andhis staff to craft world-class wines. Witha wine thief in one hand and a tastingglass in the other, Stang introduced me
to Law’s wines, which are bold, beauti-ful and balanced.
General Manager Oliver Esparhamsaid they are representative of fruitgrown at elevation on steep hillsidesunder Hawley’s master plan.
“The foresight Scott had as thecomponents of a wine come togetheras to what will add length and textureand which cooperage will offer the bestmouth feel is amazing,” Esparhamsaid. “He has the same iterations on theproduction side and the clonal selectionside. He knew which clones of whichvarietals to select and where they wouldgo. On a 10,000-foot view he thinks aboutthings like this around the clock.”
As I barrel tasted through the 2010s,the texture and nose of the wines wasimpressive.
They had an amazing mouthfeeleven though they still were being aged.Samples from Block No. 9, simply called“The Nines,” dazzled.
The 2012 wines use a Spanish cloneof grenache and had beautiful noses. There were tobacco and clove notes andamazing acidity, something Stang said
is a benchmark of the vineyard.
What to buyBeguiling ($65) is 94 percent grenache
and 6 percent syrah. The rounded outmouthfeel from the syrah adds a greattexture, while there are loads of rasp-berry, strawberry and rhubarb on themid-palate.
Sagacious ($65) has big ripe dark fruitflavors. The syrah adds a full body, savory texture and wild game notes.Despite its robust fruit flavors, it isalluring and smooth. It is 44 percent gra-nache, 42 percent syrah and 14 percentmourvedre.
Audacious ($65) is a Priorat blendgrown in limestone above the calcar-eous soil line, which adds increasedacidity. The star turn here is thecabernet sauvignon (20 percent), whichprovides cassis, tobacco and spice notes.Ripe dark fruit notes follow. Grenache(44 percent) softens the mid-palate withstrawberry notes. The syrah (20 percent)and petite syrah (10 percent) provide asolid frame.

26 SPORTSBatavia,Mount Carmelmeet in first-round playoffs
By JAY [email protected]
KEVIN [email protected]
Let the Twitter hashtagsand T-shirt slogans start roll-ing in.
Batavia, climbing up inclass from last season’s land-mark run through the IHSAfootball playoffs, opens its bidfor a second straight state ti-tle against defending Class 7Achampion Mount Carmel in afirst-round, 7A game.
Bulldog Stadium has host-ed some big games before, butthe one coming to town at 1:30p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, certain-ly could rank near the top.
“You’re looking at a teamthat plays in one of the bestconferences in the coun-try [Chicago Catholic Blue]with a longstanding historyof great success not only inthe playoffs, but for winningstate championships,” Bull-dogs coach Dennis Piron said.“That’s what they do there atMount Carmel,”
“If we’re going to go 7A, wemight as well play someonelike that, you know. … We’rethrilled with the quality of theopponent and the game thatwe’re about to have.”
Batavia (8-1) clinched itsfourth straight Upstate EightConference River Division ti-tle Oct. 24. Two of its casualtiesduring a 7-0 run through con-ference play, Geneva (8-1) andSt. Charles North (7-2), join theBulldogs in 7A.
Geneva’s first-round foe,Hersey (6-3), routed North’sfirst-round foe, Rolling Mead-ows (7-2), 48-6 on Oct. 24. TheVikings open the playoffs athome while the North Starsbegin on the road.
Apart from living in thenorth suburbs when hecoached Niles North “in theday,” Geneva coach RobWicinski admits little knowl-edge of or experience withHersey. This time of year, that’s the way he likes it.
“We really don’t havetoo many connections withHersey, but it’s cool,” Wicins-
ki said. “The playoffs areabout playing somebody dif-ferent and somebody out of thearea, so it’s nice to have some-body different who’s out of thearea.”
No. 9 seed North’s first-round game at No. 8 RollingMeadows pits North coachRob Pomazak against his almamater.
But Pomazak, a Class of1996 Rolling Meadows gradu-ate, said the novelty of facingthe Mustangs has expired aftermany matchups against themwhen he coached at Elk Grove.
Pomazak suggested RollingMeadows’ season-ending blow-out loss likely was “an anoma-ly” for the Mustangs.
“I think they’re a very goodfootball team,” said Pomazak, who said he guessed RollingMeadows might be North’s op-ponent once it appeared Roll-ing Meadows would bump upto 7A from 6A. “I know coachMatt Mishler does a very goodjob. Their offense is going to
be very dynamic, and we haveour hands full. We really rel-ish our opportunity here.”
Marmion (6-3) will vis-it DeKalb (8-1) in Class 6A,meaning the Cadets will tryto wrangle Illinois-bound run-ning back Dre Brown on theBarbs’ turf field. Cadets coachDan Thorpe’s first inclinationis the Cadets must keep Brownand Co. off the field as much aspossible to pull the upset.
“I’m sure if you’re going 8-1,people have tried to focus onstopping Dre Brown, so I as-sume the other players havestepped up,” Thorpe said.
“You go 8-1, you have a niceteam, so I’m sure there aresome other skilled kids andlinemen. I don’t know if they’rebig or small or what, but we’llfind out in the film exchangethat we do with them.”
St. Francis, Marmion’sbrethren in the Chicago Cath-olic Green, also is part of the6A field, its first time in thatclass after making its past
five postseason trips as a 5Ateam. The Spartans (7-2) hostGrayslake North (6-3) in thefirst round.
Landing in Class 5A didn’tshock Burlington Centralcoach Rich Crabel, who com-menced crunching the num-bers from the time the Rocketsboarded the bus after the Oct.24 regular season-ending rompat Rockford Christian.
Based on the Oct. 24 resultsin hand, he figured the Rock-ets weren’t in strong enoughposition to host a first-roundgame after clinching a playoffspot against the winless RoyalLions.
By the time the 5A drawwas announced around 9 p.m.Oct. 25, the brackets dispelledCrabel’s initial suspicions.The seventh-seeded Rocketsare hosting 10th-seeded Ster-ling, a fellow 6-3 team.
“That’s awesome. We’revery happy about the opportu-nity to play at home,” Crabelsaid. “You can figure all you
want going into [Saturday],but until you see it, you don’tknow.”
Piron expressed some sur-prise at the Bulldogs’ place-ment in the southern part ofthe 7A bracket, saying he ini-tially thought the draw mightbe split into quadrants.
With Geneva heading tothe north bracket, FabyanParkway served as the de factoMason-Dixon line. If Bataviadefeats Mount Carmel, whichwon its final three games tobecome playoff-eligible aftera 2-4 start, the Bulldogs couldtravel to Belleville West in thesecond round.
The Maroons travel to Brad-ley-Bourbonnais in the firstround. IHSA officials’ policiesweren’t for Piron to figure out.
“Who knows why theydo what they do,” he said. “Imean, we’ll never know. It’s avery unusual process with somany variables and so littlepredictably. But that’s whatmakes it fun.”
Well, in some circles, any-way.
Wheaton Academy tied Au-rora Christian for the 256thand final berth in the eight-class field. Although both for-mer Suburban Christian Con-ference rivals had 39 playoffpoints – the total of opponents’victories – the Eagles earnedthe edge via tiebreaker. Theyplayed more playoff qualifiers,4-3.
Aurora Christian (5-4) trav-els to defending 2A championSterling Newman (9-0) in thefirst round in 3A. WheatonAcademy ends its season witha 5-4 record, one of 22 teamswith that distinction state-wide.
“It’s pretty devastating,”Warriors coach Brad Thorn-ton said. “You’ve got a wholerange of emotions goingthrough you. You’re frustrat-ed and you feel awful for yourplayers, especially your se-niors, who their goal all alonghad been to make the playoffs.... I really felt the work theyput in this season was enough, and I really thought they de-served the chance to play inthe playoffs.”
Sandy Bressner - [email protected]
Batavia’s Zach Garrett (33) is congratulated by teammates after scoring a touchdown Oct. 24 during theirhome game against Streamwood.
