MUSIC

Country singer-songwriter Jessica Belle has a smile that lights up the room and a voice that can break your heart. Her new album, 10,000 tales, is out soon.

“Music has always been an everyday part of my life. In our family, after dinner

someone would pull out a guitar and we’d start singing. I grew up on traditional country music – Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings. Hal Ketchum has a velvet voice which still gets me.

My mum was in Saloon, a popular covers band in the Seventies/early Eighties. There’s a great photo of her singing on stage very preg-nant with me. I wrote a song for her on the new album, called ‘Mama’s Lullaby’. There’s a line in that,‘You’re the harmony to my every song’, and it’s so true. I convinced her to sing with me on the song too so that’s special.

My parents are very supportive. For my eighteenth birthday they said ‘We want to pay

up in Umina…’ – they think it’s hilarious. I sang a duet with Bill on his new album,

“Cold trail’ which was amazing. Not many people can say that they have recorded with their idol.

I’m not a fan of the commercial pop style which you hear a lot now, but I like the fact that Country music is so diverse. I see it as a massive tree, with all these different branches. Each branch is a different spin on Country. In the end if it’s good music it’s going to get your attention.

The new album is my third and it’s a natural progression from the last two – you get older and evolve. The first two albums were tradition-al Country and the new one is more towards the Americana style which has elements of Roots, Bluegrass and Folk as well. I like music that still has the dirt on it.”

for you to get 3 songs recorded.’ Dad said if you want to take this seriously you need to learn to play guitar and write songs. In my bedroom there was this beautiful new Takamine guitar, which I fell in love with! Three months later I was playing and writing.

Kasey Chambers’ first album The Captain was a big favourite of mine. I had a tape of it and literally wore it out. She’s an amazing performer. She’s this tiny little thing, but powerful. She can stand a metre from the mic and blow the audience away.

I was twenty, working in my sister’s cafe, when Bill Chambers walked in. I had just seen him perform a few weeks before in Ettalong. I loved what he did, no bells and whistles, just telling great stories with this gravelly voice. I struck up a conversation about guitars, and mentioned that I wrote songs. Bill gave me his card and said ‘I’ve love to hear your stuff sometime.’ I left it about a day and called him up, and the next week I was playing my songs for him. From there he became my producer and a great friend.

Last year I had the opportunity to play with Bill on a tour in Texas. Gruene Hall was a high-light – Loretta Lyn was there the week before! It’s the oldest dance hall in Texas, built in the late 1800s. The floorboards creak like you are going to fall through them. It’s an awesome atmos-phere, you feel the history.

American audiences are great. They sit down and really listen to what you have to say. They applaud a solo mid song if they hear something they like. On stage my inner bogan came out. I’d say, ‘I’m from a place called Woy Woy and I grew

Year of the monkey

Beautiful clothes from around the world

Beautiful clothes from around the world

TEL: 4341 0544THE BOULEVARD, WOY WOY

What a year it will be! Monkeys are playful and fun-loving.

With Monkeys being quite smart we can expect good things this year.

New inventions and breakthroughs in medical research will be seen this year.

Big Business needs to make sure they have the right people in the right places, or money could be lost. But with the right people driving the ship, things can go very well.

It’s the year to watch egos and jealousy. People are best to do their job and let others do theirs.

But if everyone, in families, business and politics can work with others, see others point

of view 2016 will be a good year!On a lighter note, plenty of socialising and

entertaining and just plain good fun can be had.

2016 will be a year to be friendly to all we meet, be light hearted, but when called for swallow the ego, listen, look and learn.

It will be a year not to believe everything you read in the magazines about people. Gossip and stories will be plentiful. Some we will smile about and others will be disturb-ing.

But over all it’s a year where what you put in you will get back.

Remember all work and no play is not good for us. AND watch the diet this year; we will be tempted with lots of new food types and recipies.

If you have a baby this year, he/she will be a clever child, with an answer for everything!

SEASONS

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Remove all cores from the apples and pears, or you can also cut into halves if you like. In a bowl, thoroughly combine the dates, prunes, honey, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg oil, pecans, salt, red wine and boiling water. The hot water will turn the mixture sticky and syrup like. Don’t forget to stop and appreciate the smells of this warm and spicy combination. Place the cored or halved apples and pears in a baking tray. Stuff each apple and pear with the hot mixture. Drizzle the outside of the apples and pears with the left over hot sauce. Surround the apples and pears with a little more boiling water, so they don’t dry out. Cover with aluminium foil and bake at 180°C for 40 minutes, or until perfectly tender but not too mushy. Remove from the oven and baste the fruits several times with the pan juices. Serve each apple and pear with a good dollop of coconut milk yoghurt, a dusting of nutmeg and a drop of flaxseed oil.

AUTUMN EQUINOX

The Autumn Equinox is traditionally a time to look inward, honour the planet, give thanks for the harvest, and prepare for a time of dreaming.

Autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, which is a time for restoration. In a world that is often so terribly out of balance, it can be both healing and heartening to celebrate this special time.

Appreciate the abundance you already have and open up to the possibilities you wish to cultivate in your life.

APPLE & PEAR BAKE• 2 green apples • 2 pears • 1 cup boiling water • 1 cup red wine • 1⁄2 cup raw honey • 4 cinnamon sticks • 1 cup chopped pitted dried dates • 1⁄2 cup chopped pitted prunes • 1⁄4 cup chopped pecans • 1 pinch salt • 1 drop nutmeg essential oil• 1 tsp nutmeg powder • 2 tsp flaxseed oil

This recipe is from Rita Balshaw’s new book Hippies in the City – Urban Remedies available at Gnostic Forest.

To Be or Wanna BeThe Hawaiian word Kealakupua means ‘the Shaman’s Path’ or ‘Way

of the Mystic”. Above all, the Shaman practices. This means we are focused on the experience. It is not about teaching or explaining as much as it is about demonstrating. You cannot become a shaman without sustained and regular practice over a long period of time.

You must set in motion the process of transformation by your intention, belief and behaviour. Most of all you must believe you are a Shaman. No one can make you a Shaman. You transform into a Shaman by your beliefs and actions. The secret is to move ahead with purpose.

Your goal in life is to be fully human, to enjoy and revel in the blue sky, the silver moon, a thirst quenching drink of cool water, the sweet perfume of a flower, The never-ending grandeur of earth and heaven.

Living is the goal, living with purpose. Life is your vision quest. Life is the greatest teacher. Your body is not a tool or vehicle, it is all about the here and now.

The mission of the Shaman is to manifest our true nature without intentionally harming anyone, to live, love and leave a legacy. To bring balance and harmony within yourself and to share this with those you come in contact with and then on out into the Universe.

Our responsibility is to begin each morning upon awakening with purpose. The daily quest is to connect with the beauty of life and to make a difference. The Shaman chooses self-responsibility and co-empowerment as a way of life. We accept and use power to step into destiny, and to make a difference.

There is one eternal being, THE GREAT SPIRIT. Everything is alive!

The source of love is deep in us and we can help others realize a lot of happiness.

One word, one action, one thought can reduce another person’s suffering and bring that person joy.

DEATH CAFEby Gypsy Artemis

When I utter the words “Death Cafe”, the average person assumes a bizarre, rather

puzzled look which is swiftly accompanied by the question “Death WHAT?!!” Let me explain!

In 2011, Londoner Jon Underwood learned of the work of Bernard Crettaz, a Swiss sociologist and anthropologist with a passion for death! in 2004 Crettaz founded ‘café mortel’ with the aim of “breaking the “tyrannical secrecy” surrounding the topic of death”. Fast forward several years, and Jon Underwood created the growing-in-popularity “Death Cafe”.

Now I should explain at the outset that Death Cafe is not necessarily an actual cafe like Gnostic Mana… although it could be! Rather, think of it as a concept whose main objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’ , taking place just about anywhere where tea, coffee and the obligatory cake may be served… along side death, of course! that could be in someone’s lounge room, in the park, or in an actual cafe.

Back in June 2013, whilst researching death and dying across the globe, I stumbled across Death Cafe and fell in love with the concept immediately. On one rainy winter’s evening that month, 23 of us gathered together in Ettalong for what was probably Australia’s third ever Death Cafe. It was a huge success. We ate cake and drank champagne (some tea was had too) and chatted happily about The End. Our End. Loved One’s Ends. Just THE END. Fullstop.

Over 2 years on, Death Cafe is still going strong here on the Central Coast, as well as Australia and world wide. In fact, as a result of this first Death Cafe, The Central Coast End of Life Collective was formed.Essentially, we are a group of people who are passionate about social change around ‘end of life’, and who care enough to take action to help lead other community members to grow through learning about and exploring end of life issues. The group is non religious, however, we of course

have our own individual spiritual and religious beliefs, as does everyone.

I have to say that talking with my community about one of society’s last taboos, has been an enlivening and enriching experience. We have seen lives changed…REALLY changed….just by talking with like minded people who aren’t afraid of The End. There have been tears, there has been ‘holding’, but there has also been so much love and joy and laughter! Together we have navigated the topic that most challenges our culture, and in doing so, created a deep sense of community and connectedness. We have explored the finality of life, and celebrated the gifts we are given each day. We hope that one day, before The End, you might come along and visit us.

PERSPECTIVE

The more advice we sought the more clouded the process became. Even things like staying well became complicated. Am I eating too much, is the food fresh, will I need supple-ments? Do I need to exercise now that my life has become so easy and I’m no longer active because I work inside.

I have air-conditioning, but I need air-condi-tioning or I won’t be comfortable. I try to know what temperature to expect for the day before I leave home in the morning, but that informa-tion is often unreliable. I no longer have time for a brisk walk, still I am always rushing.

The more I have, the more I need, the less contented I become.

So I decide to gather all the energy I have left, as it takes so much energy to turn a situation around. It takes very little to continue to roll on in the same direction, but it takes everything I’ve got to pull the brakes on – STOP – and gently turn my world around.

I have to consciously refocus, decide what to put down and lighten the burden of my mind.

I disconnect from the information over-load, turn off the appliances which have been feeding me confusion. Now I rely only on what I observe. I begin to really see, to listen and hear. I gradually begin to smell and taste my food again. I can feel my emotions – the previous ones I thought were mine were often influ-enced by others.

My mind is starting to clear and falling still is easier. Then I realise I have less to think about and I can fall asleep at will. I have less opinions and more gratitude.

GLM 12

PERSPECTIVE

These words are subjective, and that means they are open to interpretation by the

individual. We all see things differently. Because our life experiences influence the

way we look at the world each day, we are bound to see things from different angles.

In most cases we view our own behaviour as normal and everyone else’s is a variation on that. It gets really hard at times to understand some people’s point of view, certainly their behaviour – even their ethics.

We tend to deceive ourselves by thinking that we understand certain people, we feel that because they have a familiar point of view to ours they are right, yet this just means their experiences have been similar to ours. Maybe they grew up in a society with a similar code of ethical behaviour, or their family followed the same principles. We can’t ever completely understand the motivations of others. Gnostics understand that all – absolutely ALL– conflict comes from misunderstanding.

It certainly makes life easier if we mix with people who have values like ours. We know what to expect from them and we also know what we can get away with. However, real spiritual growth comes when we dare to step outside our own ethics, morals and principles and try understanding a completely different culture.

An easy, less disturbing way to do this is to read about civilisations from the past. Try to really get a feeling for their behaviour and understand what motivated them – why they accepted the things that they did. Then see them as your own ancestors, imagine how the changes that came with time had an influence on them and eventually you end up in the 21st century in your own life. You might be able to see that the threads of influence through time change what is acceptable behaviour.

Things that we once thought of as absurd or ridiculous now seem not so far left field when we see the influences that happened along the way to lead us to our current understanding. And remember we will be judged by others for our limited views also.

Everyone is doing the best they can at all times, given the limitations they have that are caused by fears, doubts and lack of under-standing.

When we accept the things that influence other peoples’ ethics, morals and principles we can live without conflict. And when we realise that ours are based on opinions we might even be prepared to let them change with time.

Mary Holstein – Co-owner of Gnostic Forest and Gnostic Bunch. Examining my own ethics every time travel to a different culture.

Ethics Morals

PrinciplesThere is information coming at me from so

many angles, some of it confirms other bits and some contradicts. It’s all very overwhelm-ing and decisions are not straightforward anymore.

The more I search for clarity the more con-fused I become!

Even the simplest daily functions are now primed with advice and pressure to GET IT RIGHT. The world is giving me so many choices but at the same time narrowing my options. The pressure to be accurate, up to date and on trend is burning up a lot of my energy. There is so much going on and I am expected to have an opinion on everything, to be concerned about things I cannot change.

I drift back to a time when life was simpler, most decisions were based on yes or no, could I or couldn’t I ? Things were either possible or not. We wanted less, expected less and were satisfied with less.

But something happened in the 20th Centu-ry, I’m not sure I can identify what it was, but gradually we were tempted with more options and choices were not so easy. Pressure began to grow and our satisfaction lasted for shorter amounts of time. We began looking over our shoulders to see what the other guy had, what he was up to and if he was happier than us.

Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth. – Rumi

SOULSPEAK

Your religious/spiritual belief and its lineage? My religious beliefs are to Baiyami our creator and Yhi our Mother creator who are the morn-ing and evening stars. The Earth is our Mother we cannot separate ourselves form her and our ancestors who are the animals, plants, birds, in-sects, all creatures are our family. The Mirraboo-ka is the river of life which is the Milky Way. Our people believe that we come from the morning star and we were brought to this Earth in the beginning, creating our bodies from Mother earth, but its our spirit or soul which originates from the morning star. How did you come to your beliefs? We had come to these beliefs as this has been passed down through thousands of generations about our existence and it is etched in the land. These stories are real and not fantasy or fiction. How have they shaped you personally? I was born with this strong spiritual belief so it has shaped my life tremendously.

What are your challenges spiritually? The modern world and all of its materialistic egotistic ways, the Racism, the ideologies of this society and the unbalanced world we live in. The future is all about money and idols instead of people being spiritually real with compassion and love, respect. How does your practice take form? My practice of beliefs is to live each day with love, respect and compassion for everyone no matter what colour, race or religion we are all children of Mother Earth. I celebrate traditionally with dance, art, song and to be spiritually whole within yourself. Your environment is your healer. It is the very soul of who you are. To what end do you practice your beliefs? Where do we go when we die? We believe when we leave this world we go back to where we come from. – The morning star, the river of life itself, the Milky Way. Back to our spiritual home. This life is only the beginning of your life journey, there is no such thing as death in the spirit. Only your body as it goes back to what it was created from, Mother Earth. Please share with us a short quote, lyrics, prayer or short teaching that has inspired you lately. To be one with Mother Earth is to be whole spiritually with oneself.

E njoy all the benefits of yoga, improved flex-ibility, mobility, strength and balance while

sitting safely and being supported by a chair. The benefits of Yoga are well known. Yoga is

now considered a mainstream path to optimum health. Unfortunately there tends to be a mis-conception that Yoga can only be practised by people who are very fit and healthy. The strength and flexibility of your muscles and mobility of your joints is irrelevant in a properly structured Yoga movement program.

If you can breathe and feel you can practise Yoga movement. You can correct postural im-balances, improve your circulation, strengthen your body, and develop flexibility and mobility regardless of your physical condition. If you have weight challenges, are elderly, have limited mo-bility or simply can’t get onto a Yoga mat on the floor Chair Yoga could be for you. In this method a chair replaces the Yoga mat, you practise whilst securely sitting in a chair.

Chair Yoga is a great method if you’re recover-ing from surgery, if you suffer from arthritis, have on going health concerns or are new to exercise.

Sit your way to health

John Wilson, www.peninsulayogacentre.com.au

Chair Yoga exercises are practised gently as your body is comfortably guided through a series of movements that impact on the various muscle groups and joint processes.

Chair Yoga is fantastic for train commuters, airline travellers or office workers or in any situa-tion where your ability to move is restricted. The human body is designed to move, a sedentary lifestyle is detrimental to your health. Chair Yoga exercises are a simple and safe way to maintain mobility in a restricted situation or a crowded work place.

Yoga is a body-mind modality, a chair yoga class aims at not only strengthening and mobi-lising your body but also aims at focusing and relaxing your mind.

Chair Yoga classes are held each Tuesday at our fully air conditioned studio at the Peninsula Yoga Centre at Woy Woy or one of our qualified and fully insured instructors will come to you. We will come to your workplace, school or retirement community.

Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. – Carl Jung

G 19

For generations, mainstream psychology main-tained the understanding that, if you managed

to remove all forms of neurosis, conflict, or unhap-piness from a troubled mind, happiness would be the inevitable next step. No extra work required; happiness would just fill the new space. To me (and modern positive psychologists the world over), this is the equivalent of owning a parcel of land that is overrun by weeds and pests, clearing all of those things away, and then expecting a lush, abun-dant, healthy, well maintained food-forest to just magically appear. It doesn’t work like that. Nature doesn’t work like that, our psyches don’t work like that. Happiness, and lush, abundant, fruitful gardens both require us to bring new things to this cleared space. Clearing away the rubbish is only halfway.

When defining the act of forgiving, the consen-sus among dictionaries is that it involves giving up resentment, anger, or the desire to punish another person. Forgiveness is the work of clearing away the weeds of resentment and the pestilence of anger and punishment. It is important, it is oh so important... But it is only half way. Eventually you will tire of being proud of a dirt patch and you will think to ask more of this fertile ground. (And, it is important to be clear here - this is your fertile ground we’re talking about. The forgiving, the clearing, and the next step of planting and growing all take place in your internal landscapes - ‘They’ cannot clear this. And, even more gloriously, they cannot impede new growth. It’s all you, oh constant gardener.)

*In an interesting parallel, I paused in my writing here and it took me three days to come back. Over those three days, I contemplated this new meta-phor. I applied it to the one relationship in my life that strongly felt like it was calling for clearing, for forgiveness. I cleared the last straggles of noxious weeds. I arrived at the bare earth, the fertile space, and I paused.*

I read recently of a couple who, many years ago, began the regeneration of a patch of Australian bush. Amongst other things, they planted euca-lyptus to create habitat for koalas. A decade or two later, after their deaths, their daughter came along to finish the regeneration project they’d

started... Only to discover they had planted the wrong variety of eucalyptus, a variety koalas do not eat. The trees were pulled out and the edible variety planted. Eventually, the whole area was completely, sustainably regenerated. Which is a brilliant result... But this story speaks loudly to me of the importance of knowing what you are planting, knowing what’s needed before you begin planting. So forgive, ‘clear your land’, and sit a while in contemplation – visualising, researching.

Well researched, you will know when to plant. You will understand the seasons of different species, and you will work with them. You will companion plant and diversify, and you will slowly build up a forest that is capable of constantly, fully nourishing you. You will not grieve when one plant dies, you will see its place in the whole ecosystem.

With your vision heart and centre, you will tend to seeds that show no sign yet of what they are to become. When you are clear about what you are heading towards, you will turn up daily and do the work that there is to do today, and you will do it joyously. When you are clear that these lands are yours, and that they are here to feed and nourish you, you will invest, deeply and lovingly in every inch of soil.

Forgiveness is only halfway. Yes, it is a beautiful halfway… And then comes the growth. Lush, abun-dant, nourishing.

People have all sorts of preconceived ideas about candle magic. Some of us use it delib-

erately and with intention. There are others who consider all forms of magic to belong to the dark arts and avoid any kind of participation. Reli-gions acknowledge and practice candle magic in many forms in services and ceremonies.

Our ancestors observed that by staring into the flame they could enter into altered states of consciousness and see other worlds or even the future.

Every known culture used candles for many reasons. Beeswax candle remains have been found in Egypt and Crete dating back to 3000 B.C.E. and the Koran refers to beeswax candles as “possessed of medicinal value and from heavenly origin.”

Chinese were using whale fat for candles back in the Qin Dynasty (221 BC), and the Indians used a wax extracted from boiling Cinnamon.

Pagans are commonly associated with can-dles and lamps, and were criticised by the early Christian Tertullian for the “useless lighting of candles at noonday” However, by the 4th century candles and lamps had found their way into Christian churches and to this day remain on altars.

Candle Magic

In some Jewish traditions candles are sent to the home of the groom from the home of the bride before a wedding along with Henna and sweets with the intention of uniting the two families in good fortune.

Today we continue the ancient Egyptian ritual of lightening candles at the time of death to ensure safe passage through the underworld and into the afterlife.

Even those living in mainstream society use candle magic every time they celebrate a birthday – they makes a wish and blow out the candles on the cake. The Germans first used birthday cakes in the 1400’s and there was a belief then that the smoke was important in carrying wishes to the Gods.

From a Gnostic point of view the act of bring-ing light from darkness represents the souls arrival in the physical world and the spark of God in us all is seen as the light within. The lighting of a candle is the time to request – wish – pray for something you want to appear in your life.

The act of extinguishing the flame is the per-fect time to request, wish or pray for something to become unseen or removed from your life.

Stuart Wilde in his book titled Little Money Bible instructs us to put a 7-day candle in the south west corner of our home and write a note to the universe asking for what you wish to see in your life and then place the it under the candle. You need to remove any doubts you have about being worthy to receive and before the 7 days are up your wish will be answered.

With all these different but deliberate uses for the flame or candle, it would seem a waste to go around lighting candles without giving some consideration to the act of creation that is evi-dent in the appearance of the flame. Fire is the element that can be created and extinguished by the human at will, so why not recognise this and place an intention to this creation and mani-fest that which you desire.

Pyrography is an ancient artform. The word combines two Greek words: fire and writing. I love the infinite variety of the sepia tones that one can achieve and the challenge that comes with the fact that no errors are permitted, since ‘erasing’ is not possible.

Many artists use colour in conjunction with pyrography. I like to describe myself as a ‘purist’, using only fire in my work. In my view, this medium’s main strength and purpose is the use of raw elements, restoring an ancient art back to life.

My subjects vary greatly and although portraits are the subject I enjoy the most, I love testing my craftsmanship with difficult subjects like water, wood and movement.

Gypsy is an Ettalong Beach based, recurrent Mana Cafe-exhibitor who finds it difficult to put herself into one artistic box! So many mediums call to her, from ceramics to print making, photography and beyond. Her work is colourful, naive and heartfelt, with inspiration drawn from Life’s major rites of passage such as birth and death. Gypsy works predominantly as a shamanic medicine drum maker, henna artist, belly caster and ‘breast memory’ caster, however when she creates purely for herself, she never knows what will come, and instead hands over the journey and the destination to the creative process itself. Gypsy’s hope is that her work stimulates others’ emotions and gets them thinking…about Life and Death.

I am a self taught mixed media artist with a long history in the creative arts, having studied acting, film making and writing. These studies have always informed my painting. I approach my work in layers. Beginning with an acrylic monoprint, I then extend ideas with pencil, ink, watercolour, and, more paint! The paintings gathered for this exhibition are a response to my perception of the world’s need for myth, for a right brained approach to problem solving, and for hope. They reflect the emergence of the world’s myths and fairy tales in our everyday life. “The coffee shop girl” may be Rapunzel – trapped in a tower, waiting for movement, watching for escape. We unconsciously live in myth.

I SEE IT FEELINGLY

WISEGUYS

We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are. Whether this observation from Anais Nin excites or creates fear and annoyance is both up to you and delightfully telling.

I delve into delicious delusion more regularly than I should admit to. Bathing and sinking into the -percieved- reality I would like (or that I would love to hate) comes so easily it is some-times a challenge to observe it as false. Fear constricts the airways and the beating hooves of a mind left to its own devices can drown out reason.

Theres a wonderful technique that can be used to recalibrate when ones anxiety or mon-key mind have taken you far from what is.

In a small town not far from here, along a laneway, grew a little crooked tree. One night a thief ran down the lane and looking ahead noticed a silhouette in the

distance, fearing it was the police readying to catch him, he fled in terror. Some time later a love struck teen walked down this same lane. Looking ahead he

saw a slender silhouette leaning and believing it was his girlfriend waiting he excitedly picked up his pace.

Another time a mother and child were walking home after dusk. The child, imagination running wild with fear from violent movies, saw a villain ahead by the trees, waiting for them and began crying in terror.

Throughout all, the tree just continued to be a tree.

What are three things you can:See now?Hear now?Smell now?Taste now?Touch now? What is, is but a short walk from that which

you are present to. Perhaps you can lean against the crooked tree while you come back.

WARM FALAFEL SALAD

EAT

FALAFEL• 1 cup of dry chickpeas (cover in water

and soak overnight)• 1 cup of canned chickpeas, drained• 1 small diced onion• 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs (coriander, parsley, oregano;

be flexible and use herbs you like!)• 3 cloves of crushed garlic• 1/2 tsp. salt and pepper• 2tbsp gluten free flour• vegetable oil for frying

DRESSING• 1/2 cup of Greek yoghurt• 1/2 tsp. of crushed garlic• squeeze of lemon juice• optional fresh herbs of your choosing

Lunch@GnosticManaCafe

• Cover dry chickpeas in water and soak overnight.• Drain the canned and dry chickpeas.• Using a food processer, blend both types of chickpeas,

onion, garlic and fresh herbs until the texture is somewhere between cous cous and paste. If you process too far it will turn to hommus.

• Transfer from food processer to a bowl, add salt, pepper and flour and bring together. (HINT; add the flour slowly until the mix balls together well without falling apart, extra flour can be using in this process.)

• Fill a deep saucepan with vegetable oil, about 2inches deep. Heat oil slowly over a medium heat.

• Meanwhile ball the falafel mixture into small round balls, about 2tbsp. Fry the falafel balls until golden brown approx. 2-3 minutes each side. If the falafel is falling apart add more flour to your mix. (HINT; use a slotted spoon to remove falafel from the oil)

• Drain falafel on paper towel to remove excess oil and season with salt.

• For the dressing simply mix yoghurt, crushed garlic, lemon juice and fresh herbs.

• Serve falafel on your favourite garden salad and top with dressing.

GNOSTIC PEOPLE

Barbara Veronica BriggsPsychic Medium

My belief is that when a person dies their energy or spirit lives on. As a Medium I work with that transformed

energy. I am the middle person in a three way conversation, between the spirit of the person who has crossed over and the person I am reading for. Through this process, I can assist in bringing about resolution, comfort, guidance and direction to my clients.

Being a Medium is only part of my spiritual path, I am also a Psychic. My mother was a Psychic and so was her mother before her. When a client comes for a reading I use my intuition to pick up things about the client and the people around him or her, any health conditions or troubling situations.

I feel blessed to be able to use whatever gift is appropriate or a combination of both when doing a reading. I do not use any other tools such as tarot, I rely totally on spirit and my intuitive skills.

Barbara is available for readings at Gnostic Forest on Wednesdays – Call 02 4344 5251.

WORLD: PORTUGAL

Growing up in Australia and being born from

Portuguese parents I always knew I was different. Things in our house just weren’t the same as they were in the houses of other kids in Bondi where I lived. There were a lot of migrant families and even some other Portuguese, and we all definitely felt different from the other Australian kids. I was the one at school with prosciutto and chorizo sandwiches while the other kids had devon and tomato sauce.

My dad grew our own food and mum preserved the fruit and the meat from the animals dad slaughtered in the shed down our backyard.

When I turned 12 we returned to Portugal to visit my Grandma. It was such a long way and I remember she picked us up at the railway in a donkey drawn cart. Then we rode for hours up into the hills to her village.

The things that I remember clearly was there was no public buildings in the village, no police station, hospital or bank. The village was almost completely self sufficient. Anything Grandma couldn’t provide for herself she was able to get by trading with neighbours.

She had an incredible connection with the animals, wherever she went they followed her. She seemed to be able to understand them and they knew every word she said. She also communicated with nature and understood what would happen each day according to the weather and the animals behaviour.

She spoke to Grandpa daily although he died many years before I went home. Things that we now consider supernatural were commonly accepted. A lot of Grandma’s behaviour would be considered superstitious. She would burn herbs in the house and throw salt around to clear negativity from evil spirits.

I learned early to read the tarot and under-stand the symbols in life. We never feared the future because we always had an idea what was possible and how to create the things we desired.

After Grandma died she was buried in the local cemetery. Some years later the villagers needed to move the cemetery and relocate the graves. When they opened Grandma’s grave and moved her coffin the lid came ajar and much to the amazement of the grave diggers her body had not decomposed. Immediately she became revered and was then known in the village as Maria do cau do Santus Caetano – Maria the Saint from the Sky.

Ingrid is available for readings at Gnostic Forest on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Now&ThenChristineWhat advice would you give to your 20 year old self?

I would say: “You’ve already decided that you’re not much good. Please stop thinking that and, if those thoughts come into your mind, change them! You have nothing to prove to anyone so stop trying so hard. Learn to meditate. Trust your heart. Dream your life and watch it manifest before your eyes because what you think is what you get. Most importantly though, dear one, know that there is nothing to fear – never, ever. You are loved and safe. If you could rewind any part of your life, what would you do differently?

I would rewind to when I was one year old. There was a family crisis and I was suddenly separated from my family for an extended period. I would be a gutsy little girl and I would say to my parents, “Take me with you. If you leave me here you may as well say goodbye to the happy little girl you know. You will come back to a sad, clingy, insecure child. Please take me with you!” Then if they still decided to leave me – at least I would have spoken up.What motivates you now?

That’s easy – I’m motivated by fun! I’m loving my life!

Richard ‘cushionman’ GeoffWhat advice would you give to your 20 year old self?

Well I love astronomy now so I’d proba-bly tell him to study it. And electronics and tapes. I’ve always liked creating music and songwriting… I was at the Sydney Street Choir. ‘Faith, deed and honour’ is a song I wrote about the Sydney Lindt siege for the victims and their families. My music name is Rick peewee Geoff.

Oh, and I’d tell him to make some cushions. And visit the Gnostic shop in Woy Woy and ring the bells – the Angels there ascend and descend everyday. You’ve got some gorgeous things in here.If you could rewind any part of your life, what would you do differently?

I’d start all over again. I’d do more trips. A lot. I don’t do so much now... I’d fly into Brisbane. It’s a unique place and has scenery I remember, not like Sydney. I might try to get a holiday up there. I have to stay here for my toes. I might go another time. What makes you happy?

Nice people. Plenty of money – which I haven’t got. A free life – Not tied up with getting married – you can’t get away anytime! And cushions. Making cushions and recycling them… Look as this nice one! I have smaller ones too. I’m addicted to them. I love the colours.

March may still be a time of confusion. Your attitude through these topsy- turvy times. and your perception in trusting in yourself, is the key here especially when it comes to business or the signing of contracts. Trust your gut feelings here, if it tells you to be cautious, please do so. A good time to allow yourself to take things at a slower pace and be rewarded in the fact that there are new and exciting experiences ahead. You won’t be looking back, rather looking forward to your future, embracing the change with new possibilities ahead.

APRIL

There are positive ex-periences with changes in your life’s direction, either through travel, education or on a pro-fessional level. Saying goodbye to loved ones literally or emotionally as you head into greener pastures maybe painful or rewarding. Being af-fectionate will help you overcome any discord within your personal life, either through mon-ey, possessions, sense of self-worth and in-laws. A perfect time to heal any painful memories from your past and make amends to those you love, embracing a new sense of freedom within your heart and well being.

MAYNew opportunities abound as you seek out activities that lead to new horizons and help you to feel free of any obstruc-tions that have held you back. Making adjust-ments for growth and change, leaving the past behind you will bring a sense of healing, com-forting you as you feel more compassionate and appreciated.
