    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

" It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit ." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit . Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank thelast years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academicexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners aresupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learningand instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meetingthe needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order toachieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and lookforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is lookingforward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken inthis direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachersare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and playthe role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positivechallenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holisticneeds of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of theopportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us onthis path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

Days of the Papyrus EbersThough Egyptian medicine dates from about 2900 B.C., bestknown and most important pharmaceutical record is the "Papyrus

Ebers" (1500 B.C.), a collection of 800 prescriptions, mentioning700 drugs. Pharmacy in ancient Egypt was conducted by two ormore echelons: gatherers and preparers of drugs, and "chiefs offabrication," or head pharmacists. They are thought to haveworked in the "House of Life." In a setting such as this, the"Papyrus Ebers" might have been dictated to a scribe by a headpharmacist as he directed compounding activities in the drug

    room.

Disease mutations in mosaicism, rare conditionwhere cells within the same person have

    different genetic makeup: (31st

July, 2014)Scientists have long speculated that mosaicism -- a biologicalphenomenon, in which cells within the same person have adifferent genetic makeup -- plays a bigger role in the transmissionof rare disease mutations than is currently known. A study shedsnew light on the frequency of mosaicism in genomic disorders andits influence on recurrence risk. For detail mail to editor

    Classification of Nutraceuticals:

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources that arepurported to provide extra health benefits, in addition to the basicnutritional value found in foods. Depending on the jurisdiction, products may claim to prevent chronic diseases, improve health, delay the aging process, increase life expectancy, or support thestructure or function of the body.

    Dietary supplements

A dietary supplement is a product that contains nutrients derived

from food products that are concentrated in liquid or capsule form.In the US, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act(DSHEA) of 1994 defined the term: A dietary supplement is aproduct taken by mouth that contains a "dietary ingredient"intended to supplement the diet. The "dietary ingredients" in theseproducts may include: vitamins, minerals, herbs or otherbotanicals, amino acids, and substances such as enzymes, organ

tissues, glandulars, and metabolites. Dietary supplements can alsobe extracts or concentrates, and may be found in many forms suchas tablets, capsules, softgels, gelcaps, liquids, orpowders.

Dietary supplements do not have to be approved by the U.S. Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) before marketing, but companiesmust register their manufacturing facilities with the FDA. With afew well-defined exceptions, dietary supplements may only bemarketed to support the structure or function of the body, andmay not claim to treat a disease or condition, and must include alabel that says: These statements have not been evaluated by theFood and Drug Administration. This product is not intended todiagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

    Functional foods

Functional foods are designed to allow consumers to eat enrichedfoods close to their natural state, rather than by taking dietary

supplements manufactured in liquid or capsule form. Functionalfoods have been either enriched or fortified, a processcalled nutrification. This practice restores the nutrient content ina food back to similar levels from before the food was processed.Sometimes, additional complementary nutrients are added, suchas vitamin Dto milk.

Health Canada defines functional foods as ordinary food that has

components or ingredients added to give it a specific medicalor physiologicalbenefit, other than a purely nutritionaleffect. In Japan, all functional foods must meet three establishedrequirements: foods should be (1) present in their naturally-occurring form, rather than a capsule, tablet, or powder; (2)consumed in the diet as often as daily; and (3) should regulate abiological process in hopes of preventing or controlling disease.

    THE FUTURE OF NUTRACEUTICALS

Increasing awareness levels about fitness and health, spurred bymedia coverage are prompting the majority of people to leadhealthier lifestyles, exercise more, and eat healthy. The expandingnutraceutical market indicates that end users are seekingminimally processed food with extra nutritional benefits andorganoleptic value. This development, in turn, is propellingexpansion in the nutraceutical markets globally. The emergingnutraceuticals industry seems destined to occupy the landscape inthe new millennium. Its tremendous growth has implications forthe food, pharmaceutical, healthcare, and agricultural industries. Many scientists believe that enzymes represent another exciting
