GMO = Genetically modified to grow bigger, faster, or betterExample: chickens are injected with chemicals to grow big
Organic = without harmful/toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizersWhen it comes to meat, the animals need to be living in natural conditions, fed with 100% organic feed, and not be given hormones or antibiotics.Regulated by FDA heavily
4 kinds of organic----
100 Percent Organic – Everything in the packaged product, or a single ingredient product, has to be certified organic, even the “processing aids”.USDA Organic – Basically the same as above, except 5% of the product (by weight) can be nonorganic ingredientsMade with Organic Ingredients – has to contain at least 70% organic ingredients“This product has some organic ingredients” (really) – contains less than 70% organic ingredients
Cage free = mean that birds are not kept in cages --- however they could be kept indoors in overcrowded conditionsNo standards by the FDA, highly unregulated
Fair trade = made/grown/harvested in an environment that encourages economic development in an area. Needs to meet standards of:
Fair wages for workersFair labor conditions – not overworked, not too many hours a dayDirect trade – eliminating unnecessary middle men, empowering farmers to get as much money as possibleEnvironmental sustainability – no GMO, methods that help soil fertility, methods that keep the environment healthy
