New Delhi: Over 200 epidemiologists, histo- rians, public health professionals, former health secretaries, public health activists and citizens have urged the Indian government to release data on registered deaths from the civil registration system in a bid to better understand mortality from Covid-19. In a letter sent to the office of the registrar

general and census commissioner, they have said that the data will help quantify the mortality impact of the pandemic in India and guide policy responses. “Vital registration systems that record births

and deaths are unrivalled health surveillance tools that are particularly valuable in respon- ding to epidemics. These data enable the circulation of excess mortality statistics that is mortality above what we would have expected under normal conditions. If made available publi- cly by government authorities, these statistics will help quantify the mortality impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in India in real time and guide policy responses,” it said.
