Hemp – a Renewable Raw Material

Since 1996, the cultivation of low-narcotic hemp types is againpermitted in Germany. The hemp industry is advancing world-wide – all conceivable products are made of hemp.

Being one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth, hemp can helpto provide people with sufficient clothing, paper, oil, fuel, foodand construction material.

Hemp grows up to aheight of nearly 4meters within a periodof 100 to 120 days. Theplants shade the soil ina very short space oftime and weeds haveno chance to grow. The-refore, no chemical pro-tection is required forhemp cultivation. Hempplants help purify the air by decomposing CO2 as a side effectduring growth. After hemp has been harvested, the soil is looseand weed-free.

Production in GermanyThermo-Hemp® is produced in Nördlingen, Bavaria, which gua-rantees a high degree of flexibility and dependability as well asa reliable delivery period.

Thermo-Hemp® is a high-quality product distinguished by itsexcellent technical qualities according to the effective norms. TheEuropean Technical Approval was issued by the German Institutefor Constructional Engineering in Berlin under the registrationnumber ETA-05/0037.

Our own quality con-trol at the factory aswell as external qua-lity control by theF.I.W. (Research Insti-tute for Heat Prote-

ction) ensure a constant productquality. We continuously carryout research and developmentwork in our own laboratory.

Thermo-Hemp® is delivered as mats or rolls and it is suitablefor insulating roofs, walls and floors. It makes no differencewhether it is used in old or new buildings, it is easy to installanywhere. Thermo-Hemp® is clean andalmost dust-free to use,non-allergenic andcauses no itching. It haseffective thermal proper-ties which make the pro-duct an excellent constru-ction material.

Thermo-Hemp® guarantees perfect protection against the cold in thewinter as well as against the heat in the summer. The effective vapourdiffusion properties of Thermo-Hemp® ensure automatic moistureregulation which leads to a healthy and agreeable indoor climate.

As the hemp fibre does not contain any protein it is not necessaryto treat it against moths and beetles.

Öko-Test, the magazine of a product testing asso-ciation which tests products on ecological qualities,has now also tested 23 insulation materials on thebasis of construction physics and heat protection.Thermo-Hemp® was assessed in total as “verygood“ in the year book for 2007.

The doctors and construction biologists in the boardof the Society of Hygiene and Environmental Scien-ces award Thermo-Hemp® the certificate “recom-mended for healthy living“ in December 2005.

In May 2006, the leading British specialist buildingdesign series chose Thermo-Hemp® as the best eco-logical building product in the United Kingdom.

It is convenient to fit insulation mats quickly without the annoyingand time-consuming cutting. You may obtain Thermo-Hemp®

even in small quantities of mats or rolls cut exactly to your speci-fication – and you do not have to pay extra for this service.

Basically, the dimensions of the insulation material should bechosen such that they are adjusted to the respective application.For this purpose, the space between the rafters is to be measuredand 2-3 cm added to the result. The oversize helps to avoid coldbridges and to friction fit the mats. If the insulation thickness isless than 100 mm the mats should additionally be tacked.

The subject “healthy living” is becoming more and more impor-tant. Many people do not feel well and have allergies – causedby materials used in their own house.It does not have to be like this. Therefore, one should pay atten-tion to corresponding labels and a competent consultation, whenbuying building materials and interior decorations.

Cool in the Summer –Warm in the Winter

In the summer it is important that the warmth of the sunshine canbe stored in construction components and is only released to thesurrounding internal air when the temperature outside begins tocool down. The heat at noon and in the early afternoon hoursshould not only be released but also reduced to the surroundinginternal air creating a comfortable indoor climate.Parameters for evaluating the heat protection in the summer areamplitude damping and phase deceleration. The amplitude dam-ping determines how effectively the temperature differences aredampened by the construction components. The phase decelera-tion value shows the time difference between the maximum tem-perature outside and the maximum temperature inside.In a test for these parameters, conducted by the Fraunhofer Institutefor Construction Physics, Thermo-Hemp® received a very goodresult. Due to a low thermal conductivity of 0.040 W/(m·k) and theability to store heat, Thermo-Hemp® significantly contributes tosaving energy in the winter. This is important considering currentenergy prices.
