Large blossom branches like this against a blue sky were one of Van Goghrsquos favourite subjects Almond treesflower early in the spring making them a symbol of new life Van Gogh borrowed the subject the bold outlines andthe positioning of the tree in the picture plane from Japanese printmaking

The almond tree is mentioned in Ecclesiastes 125 where in the description of old age it says the almond-treeshall blossom The reference is probably to the white hair of age An almond tree in full bloom upon a distanthillside has a certain likeness to a head of white hair

2 A Rod of Almond

A rod of almond is referred to Genesis 3037 where Jacob took him rods of fresh poplar and of the almond (luz)and of the plane-tree and peeled white streaks in them as a means of securing ring-streaked speckled andspotted lambs and goats-a proceeding founded doubtless upon some ancient folklore Aarons rod that budded(Numbers 172 3) was an almond rod Also see Jeremiah 111 referred to above

4 The Fruit

It is amazing to see beautiful almond trees blossoming all over Israel every winter They are the first tree to

blossom and yet the last to bear fruit

The almond tree is associated with one of the earliest prophecies of a young Jeremiah ldquoMoreover the word of

the Lord came to me saying lsquoJeremiah what do you seersquo And I said lsquoI see a branch of an almond treersquo Then

the Lord said to me lsquoYou have seen well for I am watching to perform My wordrsquordquo (Jeremiah 111-12)

This prophecy uses a play on words that carries a vital truth for Israel as well as for us The Hebrew word for

almond shaked is also translated ldquoto watchrdquo By seeing the almond branch God assured Jeremiah that He is

watching over His word to bring it to pass no matter the passage of time



In context God had just given Israel a warning ldquoI have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms

to root out and to pull down to destroy and to throw down to build and to plantrdquo (Jeremiah 19-10) Then after

Jeremiah sees the almond tree God shows him a boiling pot over Jerusalem which portends ldquocalamityrdquo

(Jeremiah 113-14) While the almond is a sign of hope that God will eventually fulfill His wonderful promises to

Israel (or to us) the context is more ominous

Later God repeated the warning through Jeremiah ldquoBehold I will watch (shaked) over them for evil and not for

goodhelliprdquo (Jeremiah 4427) Godrsquos message to Israel was that sin has consequences and there will come a time of

reckoning ndash namely the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity of Israel

Years later Daniel would pray ldquoTherefore has the Lord watched (shaked) upon the evil and brought it upon us

for the Lord our God is righteous in all His works which He does for we obeyed not His voicerdquo (Daniel 914)

The lesson of the almond tree therefore is that God in heaven watches a sinful nation walking away from Him

and declares it will have consequences His message to humanity today is still the same God is watching He will

watch over His word either for curse or for blessing When sin and immorality engulf nations and even penetrate

the Church we should remember God is watching When nations assail Israel and seek to divide her land we

can be sure God is watching

Still the message of the ldquoalmondrdquo does carry a strong encouragement Jeremiah also foresees a miraculous

restoration for Israel ldquoAnd it shall come to pass that as I have watched over them to destroy and to afflicthellip so

will I watch over them to build and to plant says the Lordrdquo (Jeremiah 3128)

If we decide to consecrate our lives to God then He promises to watch over us for good Even with our

weaknesses and frailties His eyes are always upon us

January 28 falls within the early part of the Jewish month of Shevat Shevat is the eleventh month of the

Jewish religious calendar and the fifth month of the Jewish civil calendar

Now this is interesting because the month of Shevat has everything to do with two words that any watchman

would recognize ndash watching and awakening For it is during the month of Shevat that the almond tree first

begins to blossom And the almond tree is the first tree in Israel to bloom or awaken while the other trees are

still dormant or sleeping In fact the Hebrew words for almond tree and watch are almost exactly the same word

fulfilledrdquo

Therefore we can see that the almond tree and the concept of watching are inextricably tied together One

Therefore the almond tree is very important for the seven branched Menorah which stood in the Holy place was

specifically designed by God to be fashioned liked one

The question is why was the almond tree Godrsquos chosen design

And while I canrsquot be exactly sure of the answer it is interesting to note that the seven lampstands (churches) of

Revelation 12 are most likely of the same design And Jesus while walking among them is examining them for

their works for believers by virtue of the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit are Godrsquos one and only source of light in

the world today therefore he expects to see their lights shining brightly and continuously as did the Menorah in

the temple of old

Interesting when you compare to Song of Songs 611 where the bridegroom goes down among the nut trees

(most likely almond) to see if they are in bloom

ldquoI went down to the grove of nut trees to look at the new growth in the valley to see if the vines had budded or

the pomegranates were in bloomrdquo (Pomegranate is another early bloomer)



It is obvious to see therefore that the blossoming of the almond tree is important to the prophetic timing of

Godrsquos word and Godrsquos strength and power to bring it to pass Making it therefore one of the most important

symbols in the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy

Consider also this verse from Ecclesiastes 125

rdquo hellip when men are afraid of heights and of dangers in the streets when the almond tree blossoms (Shevat) and

the grasshopper drags himself along and desire no longer is stirred Then man goes to his eternal home and

mourners go about the streetsrdquo

11 Then their father Israel said to them ldquoIf it must be then do this Put some of the best products of the land in

your bags and take them down to the man as a giftmdasha little balm and a little honey some spices and myrrh

Both important verses because the almonds were a gift to Joseph ( a type of Christ) while his brothers were still

in unbelief (in other words while they still did not recognize him) just as Israel will be at the time of our

departure And from Ecclesiastes ndash Men in fear at the same time the almond tree is in bloom some taken to

their eternal home some left to mourn

Demophon married Phyllis daughter of a Thracian king (possibly of Sithon) while he

stopped in Thrace on his journey home from the Trojan war On the next day after the

wedding however he had to leave promising to return and take Phyllis with him as

soon as possible She gave him a casket and told not to open it unless he should

lose every hope to return to Thrace Demophon eventually settled in Cyprus and

forgot about Phyllis She would come to the sea shore every day expecting to see

the sails of his ship but in vain After the appointed date was past she either died of

grief or hanged herself One day Demophon opened the casket out of curiosity what

he saw there was so horrifying that he jumped onto his horse and rode like wild till he

fell off the horse on his own sword and died[5][6][7] Others however say that he did

return but Phyllis was already dead by the time when he embraced the lifeless

almond tree into which she was said to have transformed after death it started to

blossom[8]Phylis married Demophon King of Athens and son of Theseus while he

stopped in Thrace on his journey home from the Trojan War[4]

Demophon duty bound to Greece returns home to help his father leaving Phyllis

behind She sends him away with a casket telling him that it contained a sacrament

of Rhea and asking him to open it only if he has given up hope of returning to her

From here the story diverges In one version Phyllis realizes that he will not return

and commits suicide by hanging herself from a tree Where she is buried an almond

tree grows which blossoms when Demophon returns to her[1] In a second version of

the story Demophon opens the casket and horrified by what he saw in there rides

off in such great haste that his horse stumbles and he accidentally falls on his own
