1.4 Thermal Stress Relief Units (SRUs) are ancillary items used in conjunction with the systems (see section 10.2), but are outside the scope of this Certificate.

2 Manufacture 2.1 The systems components are manufactured by extrusion or injection moulding polypropylene. The olives for the mechanical fitting joints are moulded in a thermoplastic elastomer material. 2.2 As part of the assessment and ongoing surveillance of product quality, the BBA has:

• agreed with the manufacturer the quality control procedures and product testing to be undertaken

• assessed and agreed the quality control operated over batches of incoming materials

• monitored the production process and verified that it is in accordance with the documented process

• evaluated the process for management of nonconformities

• checked that equipment has been properly tested and calibrated

• undertaken to carry out the above measures on a regular basis through a surveillance process, to verify that the specifications and quality control operated by the manufacturer are being maintained.

2.3 The management system of Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd has been assessed and registered as meeting the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001 : 2015 by BSI Quality Assurance (Certificate FM 34819).

3 Delivery and site handling 3.1 Each pipe length is marked at one metre intervals with the manufacturer’s registered trademark, the nominal internal diameter and a code traceable to the date of manufacture. Fittings are marked with the manufacturer’s trademark and nominal internal diameter. 3.2 The systems components should be protected from impacts, for example, from heavy vehicles (such as fork-lift trucks) used on commercial premises.

Assessment and Technical Investigations The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on Vulcathene Mechanical and Enfusion Laboratory Drainage Systems, Pipes, Couplings and Fittings.

Design Considerations

4 Use 4.1 Vulcathene Mechanical and Enfusion Laboratory Drainage Systems, Pipes, Couplings and Fittings are satisfactory for use in domestic, commercial and public buildings in accordance with ISO TR 10358 : 1993 and BS EN 12056-2 : 2000 for the conveyance of domestic drainage and sewage as is permitted to be discharged into public sewers by the Water Industry Act, 1991 (England and Wales), and sewage as is permitted and defined by the Sewerage (Scotland) Act 1968 and the Water and Sewerage Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. 4.2 Where the systems are to be used in a laboratory application with chemical effluents not suitable for discharge into a public sewer, the building drainage should run to a holding tank. The local Water Authority should be consulted regarding details of the effluents likely to be discharged into the systems.

5 Practicability of installation The systems are designed to be installed by a competent general plumber, or a contractor, experienced with these types of systems.

Page 9: Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd Agrément Certificate 19/5644 ... · 1.2 Vulcathene pipes are supplied with four violet coloured stripes which will clearly identify the pipe as a specialist

6 Strength

Vulcathene Mechanical and Enfusion Pipes, Couplings and Fittings will have adequate resistance to the forms of loading associated with installation.

7 Performance of joints

7.1 The joints will not be adversely affected by thermal movement when correctly made. 7.2 When correctly made, the joints will remain watertight under conditions of pipeline movement in excess of those expected to occur in normal good drainage practice.

8 Flow characteristics

8.1 A drainage system comprising Vulcathene Mechanical and Enfusion Laboratory Drainage Systems, Pipes, Couplings and Fittings will have satisfactory flow characteristics. Non-swept branch connections are restricted in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000.

8.2 Offsets in the wet portion of a discharge stack should be avoided. However, if the S-bend offsets are to be fitted in this position, large radius bends should be used (in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000). A ventilation stack may be necessary above and below the offset (see Figure 3).

Figure 3 Offsets in discharge stacks

9 Resistance to chemicals

9.1 The systems are resistant to a wide range of noxious chemicals for laboratory applications. The suitability of the systems for a particular application can be determined using ISO TR 10358 : 1993. The advice of the Certificate holder should be sought for resistance to chemicals not covered by this document.

Page 10: Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd Agrément Certificate 19/5644 ... · 1.2 Vulcathene pipes are supplied with four violet coloured stripes which will clearly identify the pipe as a specialist

9.2 The systems will be unaffected by the types and quantities of chemicals likely to be found in drainage and sewage effluents (see section 4).

10 Resistance to elevated temperatures 10.1 The systems have adequate resistance to the temperatures likely to occur in drainage and sewage effluents. 10.2 Where temperatures above 20°C are expected, Thermal Stress Relief Units (SRUs) should be installed. SRUs should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Vertical SRUs should be installed at every floor level where a stack connection exists; where no stack connection exists, one SRU every two floors is sufficient.

11 Properties in relation to fire

The Regulations concerning the prevention of fire spread by fire-stopping must be taken into account if the systems pass through a fire rated wall or floor.

12 Maintenance 12.1 Typically, maintenance of the systems components will not be necessary. 12.2 Sections of the system can be removed and replaced. Access must be provided in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000.

13 Durability

13.1 When used within the conditions and recommendations given in this Certificate, the systems will have a serviceable life equivalent to conventional domestic plastics drainage systems.

13.2 Prolonged exposure to strong oxidising agents in a laboratory application may reduce the serviceable life of the systems.

14 Reuse and recyclability The polypropylene material of the components is fully recyclable.

Installation

15 General Installation of Vulcathene Mechanical and Enfusion Laboratory Drainage Systems, Pipes, Couplings and Fittings should be in accordance with BS EN 12056-2 : 2000 and the Certificate holder’s Technical Guide.

16 Procedure 16.1 To make a joint, the pipe is cut to the required length using a cutter designed for plastic pipe. The pipe ends should be square and smooth. A handsaw and mitre block can be used as an alternative, but care should be taken to ensure that cut pipe ends are square and free from burrs.

Mechanical joints 16.2 To cut a groove in the pipe, the Vulcathene W26 series cutting tool is used, with one tool for each size of pipe. The full depth of cut is achieved in two stages obtained by adjusting the cutting tool for ‘half depth’ and then ‘full depth’, using the control provided. The blade is retracted before withdrawing the tool from the pipe. The groove is checked to ensure the absence of swarf.

Page 11: Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd Agrément Certificate 19/5644 ... · 1.2 Vulcathene pipes are supplied with four violet coloured stripes which will clearly identify the pipe as a specialist

16.3 To assemble the joint, a Vulcathene W23 series nut is placed on the pipe followed by an olive. The olive is pushed over the pipe until it seats into the groove. Before making the joint to a fitting, the olive and fitting should be checked to ensure they are clean and free from dirt. The thread of the fitting is smeared with petroleum jelly, pushed over the olive and the nut tightened by hand. 16.4 For the connecting pipe to be jointed, the procedure described in sections 16.2 and 16.3 is repeated. 16.5 The Vulcathene W23 series nuts are tightened using the Vulcathene W36 series spanners. 16.6 It is important that the nuts are tightened as the installation progresses and not left until the job is complete.

Enfusion joints 16.7 A pipe scraper is used to scrape the end of the pipe equivalent to the depth of the socket plus 50%. Removal of the slick or ‘skin’ on the surface of the pipe is imperative to obtain a good fusion joint. Once prepared, this area must not be handled or allow the ingress of dirt. 16.8 The pipe is inserted all the way to the stop at the bottom of the socket. 16.9 It should be decided whether the joint is to be welded singly or in series. If multiple joints are to be made, the maximum number of joints relative to the pipe size are given in Table 2.

Table 2 Multiple point fusion chart Pipe size (mm)

38 51 76 102 152

Maximum number of joints 8 6 4 3 2

16.10 The appropriate-sized clamp(s) should be loosely fitted over the hub(s) of the socket(s) to be joined and positioned flush with the socket opening. 16.11 The clamp(s) should be tightened round the hub(s) of the socket(s). It is important that the clamp(s) are fully tightened to obtain a homogeneous joint. 16.12 Before using the Enfusion Control Unit all cables must be unwound from the protective frame. 16.13 When the Enfusion Control Unit is turned on it will self-test and should display a ‘copyright’ message. 16.14 The instruction on the display to ‘connect output lead’ should be followed. If fusing a single joint, the output leads should be connected to one joint or if multiple joints, the link leads should be utilised as required. 16.15 The start button is pressed and the Enfusion Control Unit displays the temperature and the welding time. 16.16 When completed, the Enfusion Control Unit emits an audible alarm and displays the message ‘disconnect output lead’. During this period, the Enfusion Control Unit counts down to zero. 16.17 The joints should be allowed to cool (30 seconds), before carefully disconnecting the leads from the joints. 16.18 The joint should be left undisturbed for at least five minutes before the clamp(s) are removed.

Multiple Enfusion joints 16.19 The number of joints which can be fused at any one time utilising additional link leads in series is given in Table 2 and shown in Figure 4. This only applies to joints of the same size. The use of the multiple jointing method for connecting joints of differing sizes should not be attempted.

(1) It is recommended that where high sustained temperatures of effluent are expected, horizontal pipe runs are continuously supported using Vulcathene galvanized support channels.

Waste pipe falls 16.21 Waste pipe runs should be installed to provide a natural fall of at least 2°.

Jointing to cast iron or stoneware 16.22 The end of the polypropylene pipe to be jointed should be scored. The socket is packed half full with rope and is then caulked with acid-resistant cement (or proprietary brand of sealing compound) until level with the bead of the collar.

Technical Investigations

17 Tests Tests were carried out to determine:

• dimensional accuracy

• impact resistance of pipes

• impact resistance of fittings

• resistance to elevated temperature cycling

• tensile test

• watertightness

• strength of pipe supports

• practicability of installation.

18 Investigations 18.1 An evaluation of data was made to assess:

• heat reversion of pipe

• stress relief behaviour of fittings

• resistance to short-term hydrostatic pressure

• resistance to long-term hydrostatic pressure

• system design

• resistance to chemicals

• suitability of materials

• effect of cross flow. 18.2 The manufacturing process was evaluated, including the methods adopted for quality control, and details were obtained of the quality and composition of the materials used. 18.3 A survey was conducted of existing users of the systems to establish the performance in use. 18.4 A site visit was conducted to establish the ease of installation.
