u k p r e m i e r e This is one of Donizetti’s grandest operas. Based on the life of the early Christian martyr Polyeuctus, it charts the saint’s personal struggle against a backdrop of huge choruses and public spectacle. At its heart is a classic love triangle, doomed by the conflicting forces of politics and faith. Directed by Mariame Clément and conducted by Enrique Mazzola, Michael Fabiano takes the title role, with Ana María Martínez as Paolina and Igor Golovatenko as Severo. With the London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Glyndebourne ChorusCritical Edition by William Ashbrook and Roger ParkerProperty of Casa Ricordi, Milan (Universal Publishing Srl)By arrangement with G. Ricordi & Co (London) Ltd.

Full of great tunes, Spanish rhythms, smugglers, toreadors and a sultry female chorus, Carmen is also a trailblazing opera. Its portrayal of working-class life, Bizet’s groundbreaking music and the shocking on-stage murder of its heroine scandalised early audiences, and continues to fascinate and compel today. Conducted by Jakub Hrůša, David McVicar’s gritty, street-wise and passionate production will feature Stéphanie d’Oustrac in the title role, with Pavel Cernoch as her volatile lover Don José, and Paulo Szot as the toreador Escamillo.

Both a popular comedy and a compassionate Enlightenment drama, this is the opera in which the 25-year-old Mozart is often said to have found his mature voice. The young Spanish noblewoman Konstanze, in the clutches of Pasha Selim, a Turkish despot, is sought out by her fiancé Belmonte. The opera’s East/West clash and its surprising resolution defies all stereotypes and strikes a startlingly contemporary chord. Directed by David McVicar and conducted by Robin Ticciati, this new production will feature Sally Matthews as Konstanze, Edgaras Montvidas as Belmonte, Tobias Kehrer as Osmin and Mari Eriksmoen as Blonde.

THE R APE OF LUCRETIA

BENJAMIN BRITTEN

Supported by Carol and Paul Collins through Glyndebourne Association America Inc.5 July–19 August

Tickets £40–£225glyndebourne.com/f15lucretia

Britten’s extraordinarily tense and chilling treatment of this historic tale is explored in a brilliant production by director Fiona Shaw. Lucretia is a model of fidelity among Roman wives until the Etruscan prince Tarquinius, provoked by his Roman army comrades, gallops back to Rome to ruin her virtue. Described as ‘opera at its most nakedly powerful’ by the Daily Telegraph, our 2015 production will be conducted by Leo Hussain and performed by some of the most exciting British singers on stage today, including Christine Rice, Kate Royal, Allan Clayton and Duncan Rock.

An evening of massive choruses, bravura solo singing, and the famous ‘Dead March’. Saul, the first king of Israel, crumbles before our eyes as he watches, with increasing despair, the young hero David winning everyone’s heart – including that of his own son, Jonathan. Heading the cast is a trio of British singers, Christopher Purves in the title role, Iestyn Davies as David and Lucy Crowe as Merab, with the American tenor Paul Appleby making his uk debut as Jonathan. Conducted by Ivor Bolton, Barrie Kosky makeshis Glyndebourne directorial debut.

L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE

L’ENFANT E T LES SORTILÈGESMAURICE RAVEL

Hailed by the Financial Times as ‘pure magic’ when it opened in Festival 2012, Laurent Pelly’s unique interpretation of Ravel’s two short operas is a true spectacle. L’heure espagnole is a sassy and funny sex farce; while L’enfant et les sortilèges is a touching morality tale in which fantastical fairy tale characters, animals, furniture and crockery all come to life to teach a small boy about kindness. Starring Glyndebourne favourite Danielle de Niese, conducted by music director Robin Ticciati.
