One Hour Glucose Instructions

What is it? We screen OB clients at 26-28 weeks for gestational diabetes. This is a form of diabetes that can occur due to changes in the way that glucose is used during pregnancy. It often resolves after birth but women who have gestational diabetes in pregnancy are at higher risk for developing diabetes later on in life. Gestational diabetes can result in very large babies and more serious problems for both mother and baby. Women who have gestational diabetes usually have no symptoms and the condition is detected by checking the level of glucose in the blood. It is possible to manage gestational diabetes with diet changes and medicines. The test we use to measure the glucose level is called the One Hour Glucose Tolerance Test. One tube of blood is collected for this test and sent to the lab. The chances are good that the test results will be normal. We feel that this is an important test to insure the well-being of you and your baby. If you have questions, please let your provider know.
