Last Thursday, our boys’ cricket team headed to New Lambton PS to fight it out for a Top 16 position in the state. Missing captain Rhys Summerville, our boys were led by Jackson Moore into the clash. Sent into bat, our boys faced some tight bowling from the New Lambton bowlers and struggled to score runs early. Kinder Orientation for 2020 – A guide for parents

Enrolment of Students in NSW Government Schools

How do I know when to send my child to Kindergarten?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six (6) years old and the minimum school leaving age.

The Education Act 1990 mandates that all children must be enrolled and attending school by six years of age. Parents may enrol their child in Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if the child turns 5 years of age on or before 31 July in that year.

What do I do if my child is the right age?

Come into our office and collect an enrolment pack from our office staff. This will outline our scheduled transition to Kindergarten activities and provide important information regarding procedures for enrolling your child in 2020.

When does Kinder Orientation begin at GPS? Kinder Orientation begins on Monday 11 November 2019 followed by our SmoothStart program for the three following Mondays – 18th and 25th November, and the 2nd December. I’m confused about when to send my child. Who can I ask? Use the information about compulsory education outlined above, speak to your preschool and come and chat to us here at school. Your child is unique and it is important to discuss his or her enrolment with us.

Intensive Swimming 2019

Sorry for the late notice, but we have just received confirmation that the Intensive Swimming Program will go ahead in Weeks 6 and 7 (18th November- 29th November). The program focuses on swimmers in Year 2, however provides for weaker swimmers in Years 3-6, as well as students with special needs such as new arrivals in Australia and students with disabilities. An expression of interest note has been sent home today to Year 2

students and some students in Years 3-6. There are limited spaces for Years 3-6 and these will be filled on a first in best dressed basis. Transport to and from the pool will be by bus. The swimming instructors are trained and work for the Gloucester Memorial Pool. This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to learn/ improve their swimming skills. Cost of the program, which includes the bus, pool entry and instructor fees will be $80 for the two weeks. (If your child has a season pass please deduct $35 for pool entry and the cost will be $45). If you are interested in having your child participate in the 2019 Intensive Swimming Program, please complete the Expression of Interest form and return to Mr. Carpenter as soon as possible.

Are you red, RED, ready for Day for Daniel 2019?

The Day for Daniel event is this Friday 25 October. Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest child safety event of its kind. It is held in schools, workplaces, early childhood centres and public and private events all across the nation.

On the Day for Daniel we are:

• Watching Australia’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson

• Decorating our school with safety messages

• Raising money to help the Daniel Morcombe Foundation

• Wearing red to school.

So, don’t forget to bring a gold coin donation and wear something red to school. One item of red clothing only please!

Remember, the money raised will help the Daniel Morcombe Foundation fulfil their vision of a future where all children and young people are provided with education, protection and support to be safe from abuse and risk of harm.

We look forward to having an amazing day to highlight an excellent charity and I hope that you will be able to support us.

Brochures have gone home for our second last Book Club for the year. This is a chance for you to boost your child’s home reading library as well as helping our library purchase books through points that we earn. The easiest way to order is online in Book Club Loop (all the information is in the brochure or see the ad below) but orders must be received by Monday 28th October as that is the day that the order will be placed. * No late orders will be accepted. Given the time of year we are fast approaching, if you would like some or all of your purchases to be a surprise, please select the ‘gift’ option in LOOP and we will hold the books at school for collection by you rather than handing them out to your child. Year 6 PtoH (Primary to High) Transition Program begins tomorrow

A reminder to all students in Year 6 and their parents that the Gloucester High School PtoH program begins tomorrow. This will then continue fortnightly in Weeks 4 and 6 before their whole day Orientation Day on Wednesday in Week 8. We will be leaving here at approximately 1.00pm, so lunch orders will still be fine on these days. Students will be travelling home directly from the high school. Please ensure the note advising how your child will be getting home has been returned to your child’s class teacher. This is an exciting, yet sometimes daunting, time for your child (and yourself!) as they get ready to head off to high school. Make the time to chat to your child regularly about how they are feeling and be ready to listen and support them through this time. Your child’s class teacher is also a good point of contact for support or addressing any concerns. This is a great initiative held every year between our school and Gloucester High School, aimed at providing a seamless and positive transition into secondary schooling for your child. Rod Maggs – Assistant Principal (Stage 3)

HOT DOG DAY – Friday 25th October – orders must be in by tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd October. Hot Dog Meal will be a hot dog on a bun with a Popper and ABC cup for $5.00.

• This is the only lunch option on this day.

The Day for Daniel will include a lot of different red food options which will be available at recess and lunch until sold out. Suzie Dark Canteen Manager

Primary homework for Week 2

Just a reminder that our public speaking competition will be held next week in classes, with the top speakers from each class competing in the hall in Week 5. All students are expected to participate in presenting a speech, with this meeting part of the syllabus requirements for English. You might like to discuss suitable topics at home and provide a little extra time for researching and preparing the speech. All students must be ready to deliver their speeches by next Monday 28 October (Week 3). Please see your child’s class teacher for further information if need be. Rod Maggs – Assistant Principal (Stage 3)

Puberty Clues Program for Year 6 Students

Students in Year 6 will work their way through the three-session ‘Puberty Clues’ program next week with Mrs Debbie Faull. Mrs Faull has been involved in the support of this program for many years now and has kindly offered to work with our students through the program and activities. A note will come home with today’s newsletter, outlining the program and session dates. Please ensure the permission part has been returned. This is a valuable program aimed at providing essential information to students and connecting them with parents during this time, their most important ally through this tricky period in their development. We are looking forward to working with your child during these sessions. Should you have any questions, please contact me at school.

Rod Maggs – Assistant Principal (Stage 3)
