SCIENCE SUPERSTARS
Since the school closure, all of our students have been tasked with refining and developing their Science
knowledge using the online learning platform, Educake. This is an excellent tool to revise from and, more
importantly, to use as a way of fostering resilience and perseverance.
So many of our students have been spending their time improving their Science skills and reaching 100% in their

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Another exciting variety of topics that students have been
engaging with over the past two weeks. As a reminder,
we’re still proud to be posting a topical assembly each
week, along with related tutor materials for each year
group. These are a great opportunity for all the family to
get involved.
Last week, we investigated St Georges Day and the
origins of the man behind the myth.
World Book Night also allowed us, in the current climate,
to forget the stresses and strains of Covid-19 and get lost
in a book.
We then remembered the Chernobyl disaster of 1986,
learning lessons to help us build a safer future.
And, the life skills focus has been on
Budgeting and Housing, giving our
students the opportunity to use their
visionary skills and plan for their adult
responsibilities.

Lampie by Annet Schaap – this is a mix of adventure and sea mythology and the
characters are great to get to know. It’s one of those stories that you don’t want to
end and it stays in your head because it is so easy to see in your mind’s eye the
places and the people who take part in it.
One by Sarah Crossan – the heartfelt story of conjoined twins who must attend
mainstream school for the first time after being home-schooled. It is written in free
verse and so flows very quickly. Each word is carefully chosen and the author has
made this kind of writing attractive for everyone.
Children of the King by Sonya Hartnett – Famous for her bestseller ‘Midnight
Zoo’, this is another special story by a great storyteller, especially if you like 20th
century history. It's the Second World War and, with London becoming an
increasingly dangerous place to live, the Lockwood children are whisked away to
Heron Hall, to stay with their Uncle Peregrine in the countryside. But when they
discover two strange boys hiding in a nearby derelict castle, the past and present
collide.
Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde – ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ is a classic short gothic
horror novel written in 1891. When a portrait of Dorian Gray is painted, Dorian
adores the image of himself, and so declares that he would give his soul if the
painting would age and he could stay youthful. The story leads to fanaticism and
ends in murder and deception, and there have been many screen adaptations. For
able readers, and free here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/174
Kick Off by Dan Freedman- a ‘go-to’ book for large numbers of football fans and
great for reluctant readers. It has been around a while, but once you start there are
plenty more in the Jamie Johnson series to get stuck into!
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr – this is a personal story of one
young girl who had to leave her beloved Berlin and travel to safety during World
War II. Very evocative of the time, it has been celebrated again lately due to the
recent sad death of the author at the age of 95, after writing many, many children’s
books. Remember her Mog books?
Other Side of Truth by Beverly Naidoo – 20 years old but still of great literary
value, this story is a prize winner and explores the issues of family, exile and
freedom with stunning realism, probably more of interest to the over 13s, able
readers.
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman – one for lovers of a fantasy story, this is part one
in a trilogy of very substantial books called His Dark Materials, with a high level
language that would keep the keenest readers going for while. Master storyteller
Pullman’s book is also a film (The Golden Compass) and a television series.
This piece of amazing, creative work was completed by Ella in Year 8 for
homework for the History project on Medieval castles. The students were asked to
construct a model of a castle that they had been studying; can you identify which
one???
