For the user of French catalogues (regular and auction), price lists, offerll,adverth;ements, etc., who is totally or largely unfamiliar with the languageit i:; possible to figure out some of the terms used in descriptions and headingsby reference; to an ordinary French-English dictionary (ULarousse ModernFrench-English Dictionary" pub'd by McGraw-Hill is recommended). Al­though many words are so similar in French and English that the meaningmight be thought obvious it is not always a safe assumption. Moreover,many terms and ordinary words are abbreviated in the catalogues in variouspeculiar ways, and many words have special meanings or nuances of meaningin a philatelic context which the dictionaries do not reveal. For these reasonsthe following glossary has been prepared to assist those who may wish to usethe French catalogues nnd advertisements and engage in philatelic transac­tions in France. The list is largely restricted to terms of a generic naturethat may be applied to describe various stamps or philatelic objects whenoffered for sale, terms related to stamp business, to colors and numbers, alsobasic prepositions and adverbs, etc. The arrangement is alphabetical, ab­breviations are prefL...ed to the full word, the gender and plural endings andimplied words lHe in parentheses. What is mostly NOT covered are tech­nical terms of the postal service, stamp production, engraving, and philateHcresearch, the categories or classifications of issues, countries, subjects onstamps, etc.-that is a much bigger scope which we hope to cover in a futurp.work.
