1 I am happy that this Birthday was Celebrated. At first I told Sri Swamiji that I might be excused for this. But, on account of these celebrations we have just now heard the essence of all scriptures, the core of the teachings of all saints of all climes and ages from his lips. We have heard the Upanishads in simple language. We have heard the Quran, the Bible, the Gita, the Puranas – all the scriptures given in simple, forceful, thrilling, fiery, inspiring, direct living words from Gurudev. For this one thing, it is worthwhile that the Birthday was celebrated. I can’t say how happy I am. What countless merits of previous births have given us this wonderful opportunity of sitting in this sacred place and hearing this fire coming out of this living blaze of infinite spirituality, infinite divinity that Gurudev embodies. What you have heard just now is something that cannot be described. He has simply poured out the divine light into us. Every word is a flaming fire of living spirituality. And, as Gurudev has said, we will get up tomorrow morning the same old people. To ensure against this, God has sent Swami Venkatesananda. Every word is now recorded and it will be printed. I pray to each one of you to treasure this copy of the printed report of Swamiji’s speech. Read it daily, the first thing in the morning and the last thing before going to be bed. This one talk of his is sufficient for our whole life, to give us the idea pattern for our whole life to transform us from jivas to infinite satchidananda atman to elevate us to the Highest Divinity. Soon after Swami Krishnanandaji’s Birthday celebrations, I had requested Sri Gurudev that in my case the birthday celebrations may be dropped. After some days he said “Whether you want it or not, I am going to celebrate it.” Then he gave me a wonderful prescription. This has been a test; and by Gurudev’s Grace I have passed. “Why do you worry?” he said, “Let them celebrate the birthday. Think it is someone else’s birthday. Feel: I am Akarta, Abhokta. Be a witness.” This spiritual pill he gave me. That is the spirit I have maintained the whole morning. But, just now I am all the more convinced that it is somebody’s birthday. You have all given such a wonderful description of this person called Chidananda that I think some day I would like to meet him. You have all praised the spirit of selfless service. AllgoodnessisinGod.Allglorybe to God. You are all admiring a statue.The glory belongsto the sculptor! It isthe wisdom and thegenius of the sculptorthat is visible in thestatue. You forget allabout the sculptor andgo on saying all sortsof things about thestatue! The sculptoris there in SwamiSivanandaji Maharaj.ThedivineengineerofSwami Chidananda isSwami Sivananda. Allglorification is due tothoselotus-feet.

Therefore,letusalwaysenshrineinthetempleofourheartstheidealthatisSriGurudev,aperfectexampleoflivingdivinity that we have before us. Let usmeditateuponhim.

Whatever he says should be ourgospel. Let us make our entire life aliving, practical and dynamic worshipof thisdivine idolbeforeus in theformofSriGurudev,so thatweshallbeableto fulfill the purpose of our existence,viz. the realisation of the inner natureof Sri Gurudev in this very life. If we,indescribablyluckydisciplesatthefeetofthisdivinity,arefortunatetoaccomplishthat,ourliveswillbedoublyblessed.All

praiseallglorytoGod.All praise, all glory toGurudev Bhagawan,between whom andGod there is nodistinction. Bhagawanis nirakara, nirguna, avyakta; Gurudev issakara, saguna, vyakta. Letushumblyofferourprayers at his divinefeet that he may bless us that in thisvery lifewemaytrytoworkuptowards the fulfillmentof our ideal that he isforusall.

Deepavali or Diwali means “arow of lights.” It falls on the last twodaysofthedarkhalfofKartik(October–November).Forsomeitisathree-dayfestival. It commences with the Dhan-Teras, on the 13th day of the dark halfofKartik, followed the next day by theNarakaChaturdasi,the14thday,andbyDeepavaliproperonthe15thday.

Therearevariousallegedoriginsattributedtothisfestival.Someholdthatthey celebrate themarriage of LakshmiwithLordVishnu.InBengalthefestivalisdedicatedtotheworshipofKali.Italsocommemoratesthatblesseddayonwhichthe triumphant Lord Rama returned toAyodhyaafterdefeatingRavana.Onthisday also Sri Krishna killed the demonNarakasura.

InSouthIndiapeopletakeanoilbathinthemorningandwearnewclothes.They partake of sweetmeats.They lightfireworks which are regarded as theeffigiesofNarakasurawhowaskilledonthisday.Theygreetoneanother,asking,“HaveyouhadyourGangabath?”whichactuallyreferstotheoilbaththatmorningasitisregardedaspurifyingasabathintheholyGanga.

Everyone forgets and forgivesthewrongs done by others.There is anairoffreedom,festivityandfriendliness

everywhere. This festival brings aboutunity. It instills charity in the hearts ofpeople. Everyone buys new clothes forthefamily.Employers,too,purchasenewclothesfortheiremployees.

Waking up during theBrahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) is a greatblessing from the standpoint of health,ethicaldiscipline,efficiencyinworkandspiritualadvancement.ItisonDeepavalithat everyone wakes up early in themorning. The sages who instituted thiscustom must have cherished the hopethat their descendents would realise itsbenefits and make it a regular habit intheirlives.

Inahappymoodofgreatrejoicingvillage folk move about freely, mixingwithoneanotherwithoutanyreserve,allenmitybeing forgotten.People embraceone another with love. Deepavali is agreat unifying force. Those with keeninner spiritual ears will clearly hearthe voice of the sages: “O Children ofGod!Uniteandloveall.”Thevibrationsproducedbythegreetingsoflovewhichfill theatmospherearepowerfulenoughtobringaboutachangeofheartineverymanandwomanintheworld.Alas!Thathearthasconsiderablyhardened,andonlyacontinuouscelebrationofDeepavaliinourhomescanrekindle inus theurgentneed of turning away from the ruinouspathofhatred.

On this day Hindu merchantsin North India open their new accountbooksandprayforsuccessandprosperityduring the coming year. The homesare cleaned and decorated by day andilluminated by night with earthen oil-lamps.Thebestandfinest illuminationsare tobeseeninBombayandAmritsar.ThefamousGoldenTempleatAmritsarislitintheeveningwiththousandsoflampsplacedalloverthestepsofthebigtank.Vaishnavites celebrate the GovardhanPujaandfeedthepooronalargescale.

ORama!TheLightoflights,theself-luminous inner light of the Self isever shining steadily in the chamber ofyourheart.Sitquietly.Closeyoureyes.Withdraw the senses. Fix the mind onthis Supreme Light and enjoy the realDeepavali by attaining illumination ofthesoul.

He who Himself sees all butwhom no one beholds, who illuminesthe intellect, the sun, themoonandthe s t a r s andthewholeuniverse

Brahman,HeistheinnerSelf.Celebratethe real DeepavalibylivinginBrahmanandenjoytheeternalblissofthesoul.

The sun does not shine there,nor do the moon and the stars, nor dolightningsshineandmuchlessfire.Allthelights of theworld cannot be comparedeventoarayoftheinnerlightoftheSelf.MergeyourselfinthisLightoflightsandenjoythesupremeDeepavali.

Many Deepavali festivals havecomeandgone.Yettheheartsofthevastmajorityareasdarkasthenightofthenewmoon.Thehouseislitwithlamps,buttheheartisfullofthedarknessofignorance.O man! Wake up from the slumber ofignorance. Realise the constant andeternal light of the Soul which neitherrises nor sets, through meditation anddeepenquiry.

May you all attain full innerillumination!MaytheSupremeLightoflightsenlightenyourunderstanding!Mayyou all attain the inexhaustible spiritualwealthof theSelf!Mayyouallprospergloriously on the material as well asspiritualplanes!

BEHOLD THE LIGHT OF LIGHTS

Absenceoflightisdarkness.Darknessisnotarealentity.Darknesshasanegativeexistence.SoMayahasanegativeexistence.Whenlightisbrought,darknessvanishes.Similarly,whenKnowledgecomes,Mayadisappears.

The veil hides the beauty.The pot hides the clay.The ring hides the gold.The elephant hides thewood.The sweetmeat hides the sugar.The cloth hides thethread.Thenailhidestheiron.AvidyahidestheEternal.FormshideBrahman.BehindMaya’sveilhidesBrahman.Breaktheveil.BeholdtheLightoflights.

Prostrations and salutations to LordSubrahmanya,theSupremeBeing,-whois the rulerof thisUniverse,who is theIndwellerofourhearts,whoisthesecondsonofLordSiva,whoisthebelovedofValliandDevayanai,whobestowsboonsquickly on his devotees and who is anembodiment of Power, Wisdom, LoveandBliss.

Lord Subrahmanya, is anAvataraor incarnationofLordSiva.AllincarnationsaremanifestationsoftheoneSupreme Lord. Lord Subrahmanya andLordKrishnaareone.LordKrishnasaysintheGita,“Senaninam aham skandah” –oftheGenerals,IamSkanda.TheLordmanifestsHimself from time to time invariousnamesandformsforestablishing.Dharmaandpunishingthewicked.LordSubrahmanya is also known as Skanda,Kartikeya,Muruga,Shanmukha,etc.

LordSubrahmanyaisaray–bornoftheChaitanyaofLordSiva.HeistheenergyofLordSiva.Inthepicture,LordSubrahmanyaholdstheVelorspearinHishand,justasLordSivaholdstheTridentor Trisula.Vel is an emblem of Power,and indicates thatHeis therulerof thisUniverse.His vehicle orVahana is thepeacock;thisisbywayofrepresentationthat He has entirely conquered pride,egoism, vanity. There is a cobra underHis Feet; this is to indicate that He is

absolutely fearless, immortal and wise.He bestows on His devotees materialandspiritualprosperityandsuccessinalltheir undertakings, even at the slightestdevotionshowntoHim.

The origin of Lord Skanda, thepurposeofHisAvataraanditssignificanceare of much importance to all seekersafterTruth.DuringthebattlebetweentheAsuras (demons) and theDevas (gods),thelatterweredefeatedseveraltimesbythe former. The Devas were unable toresisttheonslaughtoftheAsuricforces.Then in despair, they approached LordSivaandentreatedHimtogivethemanableLeaderunderwhoseheroicleadtheymightobtainvictoryandprayedtoLordSivasincerely.ThegraciousLordgrantedtherequestbycreatingthemightyDivineWarrior,LordSkanda,outofHisDivinePower. This great son of Lord Siva atonceassumedleadershipof thecelestialforces,organisedthem,inspiredthemandattacked the Asuric forces. The Asuraswere routed and a glorious victorywasgainedbytheDevas.Thusitwasthroughable guidance and leadership of LordSkanda that the Divine forces obtainedvictoryoverthedemoniacal.

The inner life of the spiritualaspirant is precisely such a constantstruggle between the divine and thedemoniacalaspectsinhim.Theseeker’sSadhanaisthisdeterminedbattleagainst

theAsuricforcesthattrytodraghimdownintodeeperdarknessandtakehimawayfrom his ideal.At times he becomes sototallyhelplessundertheviolentattacksofhislowernaturethatitseemsasifallhope of progress is doomed to failure.Hefeelsthathehasfallen,nevertoriseagain.But,letallSadhakastakeheartthatthecompassionandgraceof theDivineLord isnever– failing. Itwillnever letyoudown.‘Nil desperandum’shouldbeyour guidingmotto, for the eternal lawis “darkness cannot stand before light.”Make a wholehearted surrender at thefeet of the Divine even as the Devassurrendered themselves to Lord Siva;andlikethemprayearnestlywithBhavaandsincerity.Thedivinehelpwillsurelycome,andinyourhearttherewillspringuptheroutingtorrentofDivineSakti.TheLord’sgracewillbecomemanifesttoyouintheformofinnersoul-force.Thispoweris theSkandamanifest in innerbeingtoaidinyourbattleagainstthelowerAsuricselfwithitsdevilishminionslikepassion,anger,greed,jealousy,falsehood,deceit,crueltyandthousandotheraspectsofevil.Nomoreareyouhelpless!Thedescentofthe Divine Grace with thisAtma Bala,withthisSkandaSakti,willvanquishalltheundivineforcesthatattackyouonthespiritualpathandemergetriumphantandvictorious.Youachieveyourlife’sgoal.

Therefore Lord Kartikeya is theveryembodimentoftheDivineGrace.Heisthepersonificationofthedaya saktiorKripa saktioftheLord.Thegraceofthecompassionate Lord, when prayerfullyand sincerely invoked, manifests assuch irresistible Divine Power that allAsuric forces fly away in holy terror atitsmere approach.The Lord’sGrace is

theultimateresortandunfailingsupportof all strugglers in the innerwarfare ofeveryone’sspirituallife.Thesignificanceand the spiritual message embodiedin Skanda Avatara is the message ofsupreme importanceof self– surrender,the supreme efficacy of sincere prayerandtheunfailingcompassionoftheLord.IfyoutrulysurrenderyourselftotheLordwithBhava,hewill atonceshowerHisGrace upon you. No real prayer fromthe bottom of your heart will remainunanswered.IfyouobtainLord’sGrace,youwillcertainlysucceedandovercomeallobstaclesandannihilatetheforcesofdarkness that stand against you. Thereis no force that can stand against thesupremepowerofDivineGrace.

Take shelter at the Lord’s feet.PraytoHimearnestlyandinvokeHisaidand obtain His Grace and compassion.Emergetriumphantandvictorious.Attainthe lofty and glorious spiritual state offreedom,perfection andbliss.Upon thejoyous occasion of Skanda Shashthi,whenyouallcelebratethevictoryoftheLord over the demon Tarakasura, thepowerfulleaderoftheAsuras,rememberthese great truths and be courageous.SurrenderyourselfafreshatHisfeet.

Of the 18 Puranas, the SkandaPurananarratestheAvataraandtheLilasofLordSkanda,thesecondsonofLordSiva. It relates how the Asuras, whowere tyrannizing over the Devas, weredestroyedbyLordSkanda.Also,itgivesindetailthemarriageofLordSkandaorShanmukhawithValliandDeivayanai.

TheworshipofLordShanmukhais very common inSouth India.Almost

every town in theSouthhasitstemplededicated to LordShanmukha. TheTamils have namedShanmukha asMurugan. Just asthe God of WindsisVayu, theGod ofWatersVaruna, theTamil term for the Lord of Nature isMurugan.

ToleadanaturallifeistolivewithNature.Thisisthelifeinconsonancewiththe DivineWill. Control of the senses,angerand lust is thewaytoachieve thehigherlife.Andthemostimportantformofworshipthatahumanbeingcanofferunto the Lord is by not hurting otherseitherbythoughtorwordordeed.Onlythen life in nature becomes smooth andhappy.ItisthiskindofworshipandlifethattheSkandaPuranateachesusthroughtheworshipoftheSagunaformofLordSkanda.Indeed,itisthecounselofChrist:“Treat thy neighbour as thy own self”,and“Dountoothersasthouwishesttobedoneby.”Andtheessenceofallreligionisonlytoabstainfrominflictinginjuryonanyone.Ahimsa paramo dharmah.

Hence, whenever we worshipLord Murugan, we should have theBhava“IprayuntoHim,who is the all–pervadingBeautifulOne,theIndwellerofall,intheFormofLordSubrahmanyaor Murugan.’ This Saguna form of theLordisonlytogiveaholdandgraspforthemindtounderstandtheImmortal,theOmnipotentandtheOmniscientattributesof theAlmighty,who is at once InfiniteandtheIndwellerofeveryheart.

As in theworshipof other Gods,in the Sagunaworship of LordSkanda also thereare some Vratas orobservances. Therewas once a king,

Muchukundabyname.HewasastaunchSaivite. He approached Sage Vasishthato advise him on the importance andmethods of observing some Vrata bywhich he could gain personal success,peace and prosperity.Vasistha indicatedtheVratas of Lord Skanda and detailedtheirsignificance.

OneofthemostimportantVratasofLordShanmukhaistheSkandaShashthiVrata. It is observed for six days fromthePratipadaTithioftheSukla–Paksha(bright fortnight) following Dipavali inthe month of October - November; acompletefast is tobe observedandthedevotee should engage himself solelyin the Puja of the Lord, in reading andlearningofthegloriesofLordSkanda.Iffastingforsixdayscontinuouslyislikelytoprovetoomuchofastrain,hemayhaveonemealperdayandfastcompletelyonthe lastday, i.e., theShashthiDay.Thisis theday to commemorate thevictoryof Lord Shanmukha over the Asuraking,Soorapadma.PersonswhoobservethisVratawillderiveimmensespiritualbenefit.

May the glorious Lord Skandainspireyouallandinfuseyouwithinnerspiritualstrength!MayHeleadyoualltovictorioustriumphagainstthedemonsofnescienceandworldliness!MayHeblessyouall!

Worshipful homage to thesupreme, eternal, transcendental DivinePrinciple, the satchidananda tattva that istheultimatecauseofallthings-beyondwhichthereisnocause.Itselfcauseless,Itisthecauseofallcauses.TothatSupremeBeing–unutterableand indescribable–worshipful homage. May Its grace beuponyouall!

Lovingadorationstoreveredandbeloved Holy Master Gurudev SwamiSivanandajiMaharajwho expounded tous the variegated aspects and facets oftheone, supreme, transcendentalDivinePrinciple. Its glorious manifestationswereknowntohim,ashewasestablishedinReality – experience. So he glorifiedeach aspect knowing that ultimatelydualitymergesinnon-duality.Themanydonotinanywaycontradictthenon-dualoneness of the ultimate Being, for theyareallidenticalwithIt.ItisthatItselfthatmanifestsandputsontheappearanceofmany.Therefore, themanyand theOneare the same.

ThushewroteaboutLordRama;hewroteLord SivaandHis Worship.HewroteaboutLordShanmukha;hewroteLord Krishna, His Lilas andTeachings.He wrote about Durga, Lakshmi andSarasvati;hewroteabookcalledHindu Gods and Goddesses.Andheknewthatwhile he was writing about all thesedeities, he was writing about one thingonly-thesupreme,non-dualBrahman.

ThatBeingisalsomanifestasthelight ofwisdom. It ismanifest as bliss,aspeace,santo ayam atma(ThisAtmanis peace); anandam brahmeti vyajanat (He understood that bliss is Brahman);jyotisham api tad jyotih tamasah para muchyate(That,thelightoflights,issaidtobebeyonddarkness).

This entire universe is amanifestation of God’s unutterable,primal power, anirvachaniya adi sakti. She is the great power.This power hasmanifestedItselfinallthingsthatwesee.Ifwehavestrengthinourlimbs,itisHerpower.Ifwehavestrengthofmind,itisHer power. Ifwe havewill-power, it isHerpower. Ifwehave intelligence, it isHerpower.WeareblessedbyHertobeendowedwith all the powers that go tomakeourpersonality.Therefore,theyaresacredanddivine,because theyareHermanifestation.

Thequestionarises:Whatshouldbeourrelationshipwiththisdivinepowerwith which we are endowed, whichis manifest in us as human capacities,abilities and strength? Two men were travelling alongavillage road.Onemangaveoutacry,caughtholdofhisfootandsatdown.Hewasinpain.Abigthornhadenteredhisfoot.Hewas unable even to lift it.Theother man went ahead and then, beganshouting at the former: “You fool, it isgetting late. If youdon’t come running,weshallnotreachthedestinationbeforenightfall.” The other man replied: “No,myfriend;Icannotmoveaninchforwardtillthisthornisremoved”.“Whyareyoumaking such fuss on the way? Comeon, get up; or, Iwill go away,” and thefriendwentafurlongfarther.Hetoohadtroddenoverathornandwrithinginpainsat down. As even a touch aggravatedthe pain, they were not able to removethe thorns themselves. There they weresuffering the same agony, but separatedfrom each other by unkindness; unableto help each other!Till a third travellercamealongandremovedthethornsfromtheirfoot,theylaydownthere.

Thethirdmancameandremovedthe thorns and said to them: “Friends,theyjestatscarsthatneverfeltawound.Ifyouhadremovedthethornintheotherman, when he had one in his foot, hewouldhaveaccompaniedyou,andwhenyouhadthethorninyourfoot,hewouldhavehelpedyou.Thuswouldyoumarchrapidlytowadsthegoal,notbyignoringeachother’spain.

Composition of the HumanBody: This body is composed of thefive elements (1) Earth; (2) Water; (2)Light;(4)Air,and(5)Space(Akasa).Ithasanaturalpower toheal itself. Ifwehelp this power bymeans of the abovefive elements, the work of healing isaccelerated. Ithasapower toassimilatethosethingswhicharecongenialtoitandthrowawaymatterwhichisforeigntoit.

If a thorn enters the foot or aninsect enters the eye, the body tries todrive it out; but this being a naturalprocess,ittakestime.Itisourdutytoaidthebodyinsuchawayastohelpitinitsnaturalprocessofself-cure.

Water:Waterisutilizedincuringdisease invariousways.(1)In theformof cold, hot, steam, vapour treatments;andhip,sitzandothermineralandherbalbaths, by putting those minerals andherbs in the water. Water can be usedin cleansing the stomach in the formofDhauti or “stomach wash” through arubber tube. It can be taken as Usha –Panioracupofhotwaterinsteadoftea,before meals and at bed – time.Watertreatment can be applied in the formofpacks, cold or hot, moist or by enema.Justaswatercoolstheengineofamotorandcontrolsheat,soalsowatercontrolstheheatofourbody,andhelps toexpelmanyimpuritiesthroughtheskin.

Light :Sunlightcostsnothing.Soit can be utilised to its full extent.Weshouldexposeourbodiestothemorningsun and getVitaminD from it. Ricketscan be cured by sunlight. Chromopathycancuremanydisease.

Food : This age of machineryhas multiplied luxuries, but has madearticlesoffoodmostdear.Thechieffuelforkeepingthehumanmachineinorderisfood,andnowitisbeingfounddeareranddearer.

All comforts are useless if thebodyisnotinorder.Withoutproperfood,the body cannot remain in good health.If the body is sick, one cannot enjoycomforts.

Of all the kinds of food, fruitsandmilk helpmuch to repair our body–machine.Butnowtheyarenotwithinthereachofthepoorandevenofmiddle-classpeople.

Tea and coffee have taken theplace ofmilk; but neither of them is asefficientasmilk,curd,butterandbutter-milk.

If a man wants real happiness,hewillhavetoreturntonatureasfaras

practicable and be content with naturalbeauty and not depend upon artificialmake–up.

With all the precautions, amotoristcannotavoidanaccident,whichmay impairhismachine.So thishumanbody may become sick through somecauseswhicharebeyondourcontrolwithallournecessaryprecautions.

Under these circumstances, weshouldtrytorepairthebodywithnaturalmeansandfoodremediesandfasts.

Themaindiseasefromwhichmostof the diseases arise is constipation andindigestion. If thedigestion is impaired,thewholepowerwhichkeepsthebody-machineinorderisimpairedandasotherorgans are overworked, various otherdiseases arise.

againstudybookswrittenbysaintswhohave attained Self-realisation. StudyViveka-Chudamani-Atma-Bodha, Tattva-Bodha.Life here is a great battle but ifyouhavefaithinGoditisagreatsongoflove.AgainandagainapproachthesaintsMaintainaspiritualdiary.Findouthowfaryouhaveevolved,howmanyvirtuesyou have developed, howmanyviciousqualitiesyouhaveeradicated,howmuchofselflessnesshaveyouinculcated.Thesearethenecessaryelements. Itiseasytoforgettheseimportantthingsoflife.Youdon’tforgettheminuteitemsofyour food,butyouforgetGod.Anounceofpractice isbetter than tonsof theory.Practice!Thenaloneyouwillknow how difficult it is.A harsh wordupsets you. That is due to the force ofprevious vicious samskaras. Your tasknow is to take thewaters of theGanga totheirownsource.Sodifficultitis.Yet,with God’s Grace, with determination,youwillsucceed.

Do not bestow much thoughtson body and food. These are all theproducts of ignorance. Remove thisignorancethroughknowledgeoftheSelf,by cultivating Sadhana Chatushtaya Sampad,andattainthegoaloflife.RepeattheNameoftheLord.Dojapa.Dokirtan! Doselflessservice.Knowledgewillcomebyitself.JnanawillcomeasthefruitofBhakti.

Constant remembrance of theLord,thatismostessential.Letthemindrun,ifitwill.ThespiritualpoweroftheLord’s Name will check this outgoingtendency of themind, andwillmake itturninward.

Cultivate virtues. Compassionandhumilityarethemostimportantofallvirtues,which a saint alwayspossesses.You have a sin-hardened heart thatcommits variousmisdeeds. It has to bemade soft as butter, by the practice ofcompassion.Amanmaydeliverlecturesforhours together;but ifyoudon’tfindcompassion and humility in him, shunhim. Not this pretended humility! Youmaypretend to be humble in front of apersonandthencriticisehimathisback.That is not humility. Humility mustbecomeyoursecondnature.Anyonewillbeabletodiscoverthisbyyouractions.Humilitymustbecomepartofyourverynature. Of all virtues, amaanitvam is giventheforemostplaceintheGita.

Alwayshave the idealof a saintbefore you. Cultivate dispassion. Thewealth of the whole world is nothingwhen compared to dispassion.Vairagyamakesamanmostwealthy;hegainstheinexhaustible spiritual wealth. He whohas discrimination is the only richmaninthisworld.Hewhodoesjapa daily is therichestmaninthisworld.ThewholewealthoftheLordbelongstohim.

You must be an embodimentof patience, tolerance and forgiveness.Evenifpeopleabuseyou,youmuststandlike the yonder Himalayas. You mustalwayshave a coolmind, not perturbedby anything. How very weak in mindyouhavebecome!Keepabalancedmindalways.That isspiritualstrength; that iswisdom.

You have heard much. Try topractice now. Watch the mind and seewhatyouhavedonetoimproveyouself.Howfarhaveyoupractisedthesadhana? Begoodanddogood! Cultivateyourwill-powerthroughjapa. Never forget this; Samadhi will comebyitself.Godhasgivenyouagoodbuddhi orintellect.Utiliseitproperlyanddiscriminate.

CompassionandhumilitySwamiChidanandaji has got in abundance.In the previous birth itself he was aSannyasi;fromthewayinwhichhebehaves we can find that out.Shanti was a Sannyasi,Swami Krishnanandajiwas a Sannyasi; theymusthavebeenSannyasins intheirpreviousbirth itself. It is the wealth of previoussamskaras that has enabledthemtotaketothispathofDivineLifeatsuchanearlyage.Ifyoudon’thavethem,youmustgeneratethemnow,throughfasting,prayerandservice,sothatinthenextbirthyouwillbebornas a saint. Then you will find a goodteacher and you will evolve quickly.It isnot too late.Makea resolve today.Cultivatevirtues. People have described SwamiChidanandaji.Heisadoctorofdoctors.He is a doctor of lepers. He is full ofmercy.Youmustcultivatemercy.When

youseeanymanlyingontheroad,youdon’tgo tohelphim;yousay“It ishisprarabdha”. Even if you are starving,youmust give your cupofmilk to thatman;inthiswayyourheartwillexpand.Consciousness ofUnitywill comeonlythrough these ways. Break all barriersthat separate man from man throughselflessservice.YoucannotattainCosmicConsciousness through M.A., Ph.D.,degrees.Theywillonlyfattenyourego.Selflessservicealonewillenableyouto

attain Cosmic Consciousness. Sharewhat you have with others. Give… Give… Give... You will uniteatheartwiththewholeworld.This

is the secret of abundance.Donot try to accumulate. God

distress and affliction.Remove them and you

will grow in spirituality.All these saints, i.e. LordBuddha, Lord Jesus, etc.

have become saints and supermen,by serving everybody. Cramming ofVedantictextswillnotdo.ThesePandits,iftheyarenotgivenaseatofhonourata public meeting, they will be upset.Thatisnotthemarkofasaint.Againandagainhammer themindwith ideals like“IamtheSelfofallcreatures”.Practisecompassion, service,humility andothervirtues.ThenshinelikeourChidanandaji.
