Brazil’s Globosat streamlines production with  Vizrt‘s file­based platform  As the largest producer of content in Latin Americ a, one of Globosat’s key resources is its vast archive of programs and hundreds of individual picture and audio elements for each show. Globosat operates 33 channels and employs more than 1,800 people. Therefore, finding the correct content stored on servers and a library system quickly and delivering it to the right desktop is critical to sustain their high­paced workflow.  

 Globosat utilize a lot of Vizrt’s product line with among others Viz Virtual Set that put in template graphics in the studio shaped as a glass ball.  The company maintains a large production facility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where a full complement of graphics compositing and virtual set technology from Vizrt is used for its news, sports and other types of program preparation. The staff currently makes extensive use of Vizrt’s enterprise­level Media Asset Management (MAM) system, called Viz One, to manage media during production – including for ingest, cataloging, archiving and editing. Viz Virtual Studio is used to create a wide range of on­air looks for its myriad of shows. The latter saves on set building costs and allows each show to distinguish itself, based on the individual producer or designer’s style and taste. The technology has been a hit with viewers, according to Lourenço Carvano, Technology Manager for Globosat.  Logging for success Within the Viz One system is an application called Logger, now in version 6.0, that the production team at Globosat makes heavy use of to speed up the workflow for handling audio and video assets. This app is used daily in tandem with the large capacity search engine in Viz One to locate and retrieve audio and video assets and repurpose them quickly, as required. The company’s archive department in Rio uses it to “enrich metadata by adding new markers, keywords, annotations, and scene descriptions,” Carvano said – all of which streamlines the workflow and helps editors, producers and journalists find the right files fast.

 Within the Viz One system for handling video content the Logger 6.0 application have been a crucial tool for cataloging content and making it available for producers.  The Vizrt Logger is a cataloguing tool that helps organize and add descriptive time­based information to assets stored in the Viz One MAM system, which manages all content in this central repository. Staff can produce video files for broadcast, mobile, and web in one seamless workflow, with full access from any PC or Mac desktop. At Globosat, loggers, cataloguers, archivists and journalists use this intuitive tool to add a wide range of types of information such as archive metadata, compliance notes, edit notes, QC notes, scripts, highlights and sub clipping.   “Using the configurable metadata modeling tool inside Viz One, any type of event can be configured,” Carvano said. “That’s a huge benefit for us.”  The interface can also be adjusted for different types of logging as the views can be resized, moved and hidden. This ensures an optimal setup for both desktop users as well as for the dedicated logging seats with multiple screens. New metadata and changes made are instantly updated in all applications managed by the Viz One server. This means metadata can be immediately accessed and used by editors and other users to aid their production – whether for a story, promo, long­form or online. All metadata is also instantly searchable.   The new version of Logger got its first real trial at Globosat during this year’s FIFA World Cup football tournament, held throughout Brazil in June. Viz One managed all ingest editing, production and archive workflows for Globosat during the tournament.  Extended World Cup coverage Interestingly, while Globosat’s main production facility is located in Rio de Janeiro, the company also built a satellite studio on an island called Ilha Fiscal, which is mainly populated by the country’s military and boasts one of Rio’s most picturesque landscapes (which made for great backdrops during Globosat’s coverage).  The satellite studio was built in the shape of a glass ball, and included a moving floor that could rotate according to the sunlight.

 Globosat had an extended World Cup coverage including 4k live coverage.  Inside the glass dome studio, Globosat used a Viz Virtual Studio system to insert immersive graphics showing several graphics elements such as team lineups, agenda, results, animated players, and many others. Outside the studio, but still on the island, Globosat had another virtual studio and a crane equipped with NCAM virtual 3D camera tracking technology to add captivating virtual elements on external panorama camera takes. This included adding a virtual sailboat to represent the competition between teams, as well as many other creative treatments.  Live 4K production and Vizrt To further support its hundreds of hours of live World Cup coverage, Globosat also built a brand new 4K OB Van that was used by Globosat and FIFA TV to produce and distribute the country’s first live 4K transition from Maracanã stadium in Rio De Janeiro. On board the OB Van is a Viz Trio real­time 3D character generator system controlling a 4K Viz Engine that was used for graphics produced on­board the OB van and inserted into the 4K feed. The resulting live 4K transmissions were distributed locally and across the world. Three of Brazil’s largest cable/satellite operators distributed the 4K live games produced by Globosat/FIFA to select sites and subscribers’ homes with compatible Ultra High Definition television sets.  Social media at the world cup Globosat began using the Viz Social TV application right before the start of the World Cup. The installation, configuration, training and creation of the first graphics elements were completed in one day. An application within Viz Social TV called Feedstreamer was integrated with Flowics, an advanced social media data analysis tool, to manage content distributed across many social media sources.

During the World Cup they also used several Viz Libero analysis systems to supplement its on­air coverage.  Daily production benefits from integrated platform Today, all of these Vizrt tools, are tightly integrated into one overall platform that can be accessed by anyone in Globosat’s main facility, for the benefit of Globosat’s daily production. Other Vizrt products in use in the content creation chain at Globosat include: Viz Trio, Viz Content Pilot, Viz World, Viz NLE, Viz Easycut, Viz Precut, Viz Dart, Viz Video Engine, and Viz Libero.  “Vizrt’s full slate of production tools allow us to use state­of­the­art technologies that include advanced graphics, virtual reality, social media integration, for the benefit of our on­air talent and viewers,” said Globosat’s Carvano, “Behind the scenes, we use Vizrt’s tools every day to ingest, control, virtualize, edit, take transmission and playout decisions, catalog and archive all of our content. All of the technology worked very successfully and we continue to use it today for our regular programs. We could not be as productive, and as popular with our viewers, without it.”  Globosat offers entertainment, information, and leisure programming via a variety of channels that now include Rede Telecine, SporTV, gnt, Multishow, GloboNews, VIVA, Gloob, +Globosat, Universal Channel and Canal Brazil.
