Latest trends
European demand for seafood is still slow, despite the current Lenten season and the approaching Holy Week, when consumption of fish in Southern Europe is typically at its
highest. Prices are slowly rising, but the lack of demand from China at present means that caution is prevailing.
The supply of cod to European markets is tight at the moment due to wintery weather conditions in all major production areas. In Poland, demand is still quite slow and prices are stable, but some improvement is likely over the coming weeks.

COD - in Poland (FOB, origin: Baltic Sea)
2
There has been high consumption of salted cod fillets in Italy during the Christmas period and also during the starting months of the year. However, due to bad weather in Iceland, fishing
in March has not been as good as expected. In the Faroe Islands, meanwhile, it is becoming more and more difficult to locate cod and catches by Faroese trawlers consist mainly of ling and brosme. For wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) from fresh raw material of Faroese and
Icelandic origin, demand is still strong and prices are being well supported, as is
typical at this time of year.
Moderate demand for turbot is being
reported in the wake of the year-end festivities. Prices increased in December
and have remained stable at what is still a relatively low level.
Prices of Alaska pollock in Vladivostok are rising due to stormy weather conditions,
while stable prices were recorded for the wholesale market in Moscow on the back of
good demand.
After months of declining prices, there are now tentative signs of an upward trend. This is being driven primarily by a return of demand for canned tuna in the two main consumption
markets, Europe and the United States of America.
Catch rates in the Western and Central Pacific remain moderate-to-good despite some areas experiencing bad weather. Carrier landings in
Thailand remain high with arrivals from the Indian Ocean supplementing those from the
Western and Central Pacific. Raw material inventories at Thai canneries remain healthy but reports suggest that market activity is
picking up.
Catches in the Eastern Pacific remain poor and local canneries continue to struggle for raw material despite carrier arrivals from the Indian Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific.
Prices have risen in Manta and are now 10 percent above the Bangkok level.

There is little change in the situation in the Indian Ocean as fishing remains moderate-to-
good and raw material inventories at local canneries remain healthy. Carrier transshipment activities also remain high as
cargoes continue to be diverted to both Ecuador and Thailand. Mirroring the increases
in both of these markets, skipjack and yellowfin prices have risen.
Since the 2-month FAD closure in the Atlantic Ocean ended on 1 March, catches have been
moderate for skipjack but poor for yellowfin. Similarly, raw material inventories at local
canneries remain moderate for skipjack but short for yellowfin. Skipjack prices have fallen slightly while yellowfin prices continue to
increase.
With more steady supply from the Indian Ocean, European prices for both skipjack and yellowfin have continued to fall while the market price
for cooked, double cleaned loins has remained stable.
Herring catches are strong in Poland, translating into falling prices despite good demand. Sprat
prices, however, are rising on the Polish market and further price increases are likely. For Pacific herring, although landings have been low, prices are stable across the country due to
the large volumes currently in stock.
Octopus prices in Indonesia have risen sharply due to bad weather and supply shortages, as
well as very high demand. Raw material prices on international markets are now at their highest point of the last 10 years.
South African squid landings remain steady.
Prices for larger sizes are stable but there is weakness for small-sized squid. The strength of
the local currency reflects political developments, and reduces the value of export sales in local currency terms.

SHRIMP
Shrimp raw material supply from Indonesia has increased slightly, following bad weather in early 2018 when several shrimp culturing areas were flooded, leading to shrimp harvest losses. However, market prices are quite steady at
present as there is sufficient stock available in Indonesia and also on the European
market.
For Argentine shrimp, the trend reported last month continued into March. Large-sized shrimp have been in limited supply,
and prices have risen. For all other sizes, demand has been weak, and plentiful
arrivals of shrimp from processing plants on land has led to decreasing prices. Traders are hoping for better demand during Holy
Week, but early indications are sluggish.
OTHER CRUSTACEANS Demand for lobster and crab is rather weak at present, which is normal for this time of year.
Prices are stable in anticipation of the fisheries reopening in May.

EUROPEAN LOBSTER - in Europe, origin:
5
At the end of the Bouchot season, the French market is dominated at present by Dutch, Irish
and Spanish mussels.
French export statistics for live and fresh
oysters show a significant increase in volume in 2017. Overall, oyster exports grew by 27
percent to 12 500 tonnes worth USD 100 million. Italy retains its place as the main market for French oysters with a 23 percent
market share, but the increase in exports was due mainly to a 70 percent increase in exports
to China and Hong Kong.
After a relatively slow start to the year, farmed salmon prices across Europe turned sharply
upwards in March, spreading concern amongst buyers. Colder water temperatures and higher than expected losses in Norway, as well as storms in Scotland, have seen supply tighten just
as demand strengthens in the lead-up to Easter. As a result, average export prices for Norwegian farmed whole Atlantics have spiked to NOK 66.88 per kg as of week 10, significantly
higher than the NOK 59.17 recorded in the same week last year, and well above the average of around NOK 55 observed in the first two months of 2018. The most recent figures published by the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) reflect the relatively lower price levels in February,
with the total value of Norway’s salmon exports down by 5 percent year-on-year to NOK 4.7 billion for the month, despite a 5 percent increase in export volume to 75 700 tonnes. The
totals for January and February combined were 160 000 tonnes worth NOK 9.7 billion. So far in 2018, the NSC reports an increase in the share
of exports directed to the core EU market, citing a strengthening euro as the main contributing
factor. Poland and France continue to rank as the top two markets for Norwegian exports. In the UK, price levels of GBP 6.70-7.00 per kg
have been reported for week 11.
Demand for salmon is stronger than ever in EU markets, evidenced by the considerable resistance to downward price pressure when
harvest volumes rose rapidly in the second half of 2017. However, as of January, biomasses at Norwegian farms were reported to be 4 percent
higher than January 2017 and global farmed Atlantic production volumes are expected to increase by some 5 percent overall this year. This has in turn dampened any expectations for sustained prices at the current level. At FishPool, Q2 forward prices have been revised upwards
to around NOK 59 per kg but Q4 prices remain approximately flat at NOK 56.40 per kg.

The farmed trout sector in Norway has been suffering from a persistent supply shortage for
almost three years, and this has seen prices pushed up to extreme heights. In early 2018, rising biomasses and increased harvest
volumes over the prior six months had driven prices down somewhat, to around NOK 56 per
kg for fresh whole as of mid-February compared with NOK 70 in February last year. However, this is still some way above the
prices recorded in the same period in 2016, when biomasses were around 35 percent
higher than currently. According to the NSC, total trout exports out of Norway increased 25 percent in February, while value remained
flat. The three largest markets for the same month were Belarus, Poland and the United
States.
The carp market is slowly gathering pace and activity will continue accelerating over the coming days as Easter—one of the most
important sales periods—is approaching. Prices have already moved up quite strongly in recent
weeks. The negative press in Spain relating to
pangasius has had a significant impact on pangasius imports. In 2017, only 8 000 tonnes
of pangasius fillets were imported by Spain from Viet Nam, down from around 23 000 tonnes in 2015 and 2016.

When the weather is cool and water temperatures are low early in the year, fish growth rates at bass and
bream farms are slower, demand is weak and prices are low. Demand
strengthens with the arrival of the Lenten season and prices turn
upwards, usually reaching a peak in early summer.
This year, although the Lenten boost has lifted March prices for some
sizes, higher supply expectations continue to weigh on the market and the outlook for the upcoming high
season is uncertain. This is particularly true for the Greek industry, which has been losing share to Turkish producers in
many core markets and is relatively more at risk if supply volumes keep price levels low. While in 2016 it was bream that suffered most from production hikes, in 2017 and 2018 it seems that bass is now experiencing relatively more downward price pressure.
