Reading passage

1.Nowadays, we are used to seeing young children learn through play ininfants schools and kindergartens. This is partly thanks to Maria

Montessorri. Children there play with brightly coloured toys. They are

encouraged to paint and draw and their paintings are pinned on the wall.

They are also encouraged to discover things for themselves .

2.But schools were not like that before Maria Montessorris times. Learnerswere seated in black uncomfortable desks arranged in fixed rows. They

had to learn lessons by heart. Corporal punishment was quite commonand if a child made the tiniest mistake, he was smacked or flogged on the

spot.

3.Maria Montessorri actually started a revolution in education. She liked towork with neglected children and those who had difficulties of any kind. Of

course a lot of people didnt approve of Montessoris ideas. They believed

her method could not work but she insisted that if you showed children

respect, understanding and kindness, they could learn better. She also

believed that if children are happy and interested, they get good results at

school. Frightening teachers and boring lessons were not successful at all.
