This year: supplementary CORSIA seminar
All sectors of the global aviation industry have been working together to reduce air transport’s environmental impact, following a shared strategy for CO2 emissions reduction. The Summit is where, in 2008, the aviation industry launched the world’s first emissions reduction goals from a single global sector. Since those goals were announced, the industry has been making impressive progress in addressing its carbon emissions, as well as driving all aspects of sustainable development.
ABOUT THE 2017 SUMMIT
The 2017 Summit comes exactly one year after the historic agreement at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to institute the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). With this agreement, aviation will be able to achieve its goal of carbon-neutral growth.
Now that CORSIA has been agreed upon, the 2017 Summit will look towards the long-term future of aviation and how the industry can develop in a sustainable manner.
The event will combine high-level political discussions and technical breakout sessions. There will also be a supplementary workshop on developments relating to CORSIA.
Topics will include: the sustainable development of aviation and how the industry can support other sectors, such as tourism; how aviation can increase its use of sustainable energy, both in the sky and on the ground; meeting the industry’s 2050 emissions reduction goal through new, disruptive technology; and the big picture and future challenges.
WHO WILL ATTEND
Airlines, airports, air navigation service providers, manufacturers, fuel suppliers, ground service and transportation providers, industry suppliers of products and services, travel and tourism companies, civil aviation authorities, chambers of commerce, government representatives, aviation regulators, industry trade associations, environmental groups and civil society.
» Be part of the only aviation and sustainability event to be organised by ATAG together with ACI, CANSO, IATA and ICCAIA, representing the entire commercial air transport industry.
» Network with over 300 of aviation’s leaders, experts, stakeholders, regulators, NGOs and the media.
» Question the experts on topics of critical importance to aviation today, through interactive panel debates and technical workshops.

11:15 SESSION 2: TAKING ALTERNATIVE ENERGY TO NEW HEIGHTS Now that many of the technical hurdles facing aviation in its move towards sustainable alternative fuels have been overcome, commercialisation and scaling up of supply is the next step. Learn about current demand trends and expectations, hear from those supplying / preparing to produce or supply sustainable aviation fuel. What challenges must be overcome and what will the future look like?

DAY ONETUESDAY
3 OCTOBER
D Aircraft lifecycle and end-of-lifeIt is essential to manage the aircraft decommissioning process in a sustainable and safe manner, maximising the re-use of components and recycling valuable materials. In this session, hear how these processes are managed and how manufacturers are increasingly making aircraft “designed for recycling”.
E Innovative solutions to address climate changeInnovative case study presentations from across the industry that deliver environmental benefits.
A Community issues (noise, local air quality, community engagement)Noise concerns around airports, their impact and solutions. The various sources of local emissions and good practices aimed at controlling these. How can airports and ANSPs involve community stakeholders as partners in addressing environmental issues?
B Aviation’s role in tackling illegal traffickingHow aviation stakeholders can assist enforcement authorities in combating the illegal wildlife trade and human trafficking.
C
This workshop, run by ICAO, several UN agencies and ATAG, is aimed at encouraging dialogue and action between aviation industry and government representatives, to ensure decision-makers understand the importance of air transport as a priority for sustainable development and investment. For least-developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island states, aviation represents an essential lifeline to connect to the world. The Aviation Partnerships for Sustainable Development project will support States in achieving related commitments undertaken through the 2030 Agenda, the Istanbul Programme of Action, the Vienna Programme of Action, and the Samoa Pathway.

08:30 OPENING SESSION DAY 2
08:50 SESSION 3: MEETING THE 2050 GOAL THROUGH TECHNOLOGY With the industry’s medium-term goal of carbon-neutral growth well on course through the adoption of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), focus is shifting towards the industry’s long-term emissions reduction goal of halving net CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050, relative to 2005 levels. Hear how the industry is working together and alongside partners in government and academia to develop disruptive new technology aimed at drastically reducing aviation’s environmental impact.
10:30 Networking break sponsored by
11:00 PRESENTATION: THE NEED FOR GLOBAL STANDARDS
11:10 SESSION 4: THE BIG PICTURE AND FUTURE CHALLENGES Aviation is facing a number of long-term challenges that could threaten its future if left unaddressed. Hear the views of global industry leaders on what those challenges are and how we can approach the issues of capacity, workforce retention, ATM modernisation and the increasing slide towards protectionism.
12:25 REFLECTIONS With the Directors General of ACI, CANSO, IATA, IBAC and ICCAIA
13:00 Lunch and end of Summit
14:00 OPTIONAL SEMINAR
While the main political agreement on introducing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) was reached at ICAO in 2016, there is a strong need for capacity building in the years leading up to the scheme coming into effect after 2020.
This seminar will provide an overview of the latest developments on CORSIA and the role of operators and administering authorities in the running of the scheme.
Hear from experts involved in the ICAO process on the next steps and what to expect in the coming years. There will also be the opportunity to engage with representatives from the carbon markets and to learn how industry can interact with them under CORSIA.
The Seminar will finish at 16:30.
