The Contract

In March 2007, Global Renewables Lancashire Ltd (GRLL), Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council signed what was then the UK’s largest waste Public Finance Initative (PFI) contract; a £2bn, 25-year agreement to process Lancashire’s household waste

The contract saw the provision of two 300,000 tonne reduce, reuse and recycle waste processing facilities

A facility in Thornton (near Blackpool) and a facility in Leyland (near Preston)

Project Benefits for Lancashire

Diversion of over 75% of Lancashire’s domestic waste from landfill

Pre-Sort Area

Grapples in a pit area load hoppers with waste material to be transported by two conveyor belts into the Pre-Sort cabin

16 Sorters per shift remove material from the conveyors

Pre-Sort is the part of the Operation which helps protect the system by removing items from the waste stream which do not fit in with the system. (Incompatibles, Hazardous, Bulky and Glass)

School Programme: A sky bridge from the education centre takes people onto a walkway through the plant. There are huge viewing windows overlooking the plant.
