In 2001 the U.S. created 409 million tons of non-hazardous waste.

2008, Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash (Municipal solid waste). Recycled and composting 83 million tons of this material,

equivalent to a 33.2 percent recycling rate.

About 135 million tons of MSW was discarded in landfills in 2008.

Waste generation has increased, from 3.66 to 4.50 pounds per person per day between 1980 and 2008.

The industrial revolution sparked our current “disposable” culture. Which is the basis of modern recycling.

During the 30’s and 40’s recycling became a major part of the American as a result of the Great depression and the war effort.

Recycling remerged in the 60’s and 70’s as a mainstream idea.

In 1987 the Mobro 4000 incident changes Americas perception of trash forever.

Aluminum can recycling saves 95% of the energy needed to make aluminum from bauxite ore. Energy savings in 1992 were enough to light a city the size of Pittsburgh for six years.

One recycled aluminum can saves enough electricity to operate a TV for three hours.

Recycling one ton of glass saves the equivalent of 10 gallons of oil.

Every ton of recycled paper saves approximately four barrels of oil, 4200 kilowatt hours of energy and enough energy to heat and air-condition the average North American home for almost six months.

The EPA has found that making paper from recycled materials results in 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution. This means that every ton of recycled paper keeps almost 60 pounds of pollutants out of the atmosphere that would have been produced if the paper had been manufactured from virgin resources.

In many instances it costs more to recycle then to bury this garbage and manufacture new products from scratch.

Processing raw materials has become more efficient and human innovation increases our resources at our command.

Recycling does not always cut down on pollution.

Using less of one resource, can lead to overuse of another resources.
