The International Tropical Marine Ecosystems Man- agement Symposium (ITMEMS) is a major activity of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). Convened previously in Australia (1998) and the Philippines (2003), ITMEMS facilitates productive discussion and information sharing by people involved in management of coral reefs and related ecosystems, and the implementation of the ICRI Framework for Action. The goal of ITMEMS 3 is to provide an opportunity for marine and coastal managers and stakeholders to exchange experiences and knowledge, through management-related case studies; to identify gaps and make informed recommendations on priority issues and management approaches, and define future action for the management of tropical marine ecosystems International Tropical Marine Ecosystems Management Symposium ITMEMS 3 Cozumel, Mexico 15-20 October 2006 Official Host ITMEMS 3 is an activity of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) and is jointly hosted by the ICRI Secretariat and the Governments of Palau and Japan. In addition to US Department of State contributions, ITMEMS 3 is supported by: Fees: A symposium fee will be due upon registration. Costs cover transfers between the workshop venues, relevant workshop materials, buffet lunch and refreshments, and a subsequent copy of the ITMEMS 3 proceedings publication. Registration: Participants are requested to register their expression of interest to participate in the symposium on-line through the ITMEMS 3 website: www .itmems.or g. Please note that participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 300, and therefore early registration is encouraged. Hotels: Participants are requested to make hotel reservations through the ITMEMS 3 Organizing Committee: ( [email protected]). A final plenary session will be utilized to develop an Action Statement of priorityissues with outcomes and recommendations intended for dissemination topartners in conservation and integrated management. The proceedings from theprevious meeting, ITMEMS 2, are available from the following link:

The above list is not exhaustive. Interested parties are encouraged to identifypriority topics, and to suggest additional themes for inclusion. Discussion ofcrosscutting themes will include; policy development and planning, theestablishment of management programmes, and the application of variousmethods to support management.

Through a series of parallel sessions, participants will work together to shareexperiences and define needs. There will be ample opportunity for plenaryfeedback to the entire symposium. Poster sessions and side meetings will alsobe used between sessions, to facilitate additional discussion and to providenetworking opportunities.

Proposed case studies for oral or poster presentations should be submitted [email protected] for consideration by the ITMEMS 3 Programme Committee andsession organizers, and must be presented in English. Case studies will be reviewed on thebasis of their relevance to thematic areas and potential for generating discussion, and ifaccepted, will be nominated for either an oral or poster presentation. All accepted casestudies (whether for presentation or poster) will be published in the ITMEMS 3 proceedings.
