OverviewOn 23 September, the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition will publish Food systems and diets: Facing the challenges of the 21st century, a report that draws on the latest science and evidence to assess the diverse challenges nations will face in ensuring healthy and nutritious diets over the next 20 years. It also sets out priorities for action to prepare for the future, with a focus on low-and middle-income countries.

Additional Statistics: Between 2000 and 2015, the sales of ultra-processed food and beverages grew on average by
3.7%
Estimates suggest that the global food system will need to provide high-quality diets to more than 2 billion extra people by 2050, compared with 2015.
In Africa and Asia, the estimated impact on gross domestic product (GDP) is 11 percent every year — more than the annual economic downturn caused by the global financial crisis of 2008-10.
The sales of sweet and savory snacks in lower middle-income countries grew by nearly 50% in just the past 5 years.
