EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As airlines across the globe contend with numerous headwind risks; Sustainability is the corporate buzzword
today. There is also a much higher focus on sustainable aviation fuels, with airlines and fuel producers proactively
collaborating to ensure they comply with obligations under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for
International Aviation (CORSIA).
Whilst many airlines, aircraft manufacturers and industry associations have committed to voluntary, aspirational
targets that would collectively achieve carbon- neutral growth by 2020 and a 50% reduction in GHG emissions by
2050 (relative to 2005 levels), a significant longer-term reduction of emissions would require airlines to use more
fuels that are renewable and sustainable.
India, the world's third largest oil consumer, consumed 206.2 Million Tonnes including 7.6 Million Tonnes of
Aviation Turbine Fuel in the 2017-18 Fiscal. As the fastest growing economy & world's fourth largest aviation
market, oil demand is slated to increase to over 244 MT including 12.5 MT of ATF by 2021-22. With oil imports
constituting 80% of the consumption, Honourable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi's made a clarion call to all
Ministries in August 2018 to reduce 10% consumption of petroleum products through various measures
including blending of biofuels.
Implementing Hon'ble Prime Minister's vision to seek alternate sources of fuel towards reducing country's
dependence on oil, SpiceJet successfully operated India's first ever biojet fuel flight on 27th August 2018. The
flight was powered with a blend of 75% air turbine fuel (ATF) and 25% biojet fuel. Made from Jatropha crop, the
fuel had been developed by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun. The fuel had been recognised
by American Standard Testing Method (ASTM) and met the specification standards of Pratt & Whitney and
Bombardier for commercial application in aircraft.
On 17th of December last year, for the first time an An-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) flew with
10% blended bio-jet fuel produced from Jatropha oil. The maiden IAF flight was flown by highly qualified test pilots
from the Aircraft and System Testing Establishment (ASTE).
th thOn 26 January 2019, at the 70 Republic Day celebrations this year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) led the way towards
a greener future showcasing three An-32 aircraft flying in new 'SUTLEJ' formation. The lead aircraft of the
formation, piloted by Group Captain M V Panicker was flown using Aviation Turbine Fuel blended with 10 per cent
Biofuel. IAF plans to expand the use of biojet fuel on its transport fleet and helicopters before coming to fighter
aircraft, after assessing its impact on engines, cost saving and production capacity in India.
GSAFS 2019 - Post Show Report 04
Every year, the IAF pays about Rs 40,000 crores or USD 6 Billion for Aviation Turbine Fuel. With Bio-Aviation Fuel,
the IAF expects its fuel bill to drop by about 10 per cent. Initially, the plan is to use a 90-10 mix (90 litres of AFT
mixed with 10 litres of Bio-fuel), gradually, as the supply and production of Bio-Fuel increases the plan is to move
to a 75 -25 mixture.
Globally, several airlines have concluded long-term off take agreements with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
suppliers, most of which are reported as commercially competitive. A number of airports have also agreed to
supply SAF through their hydrant system. As per IATA, over 5.5 billion Liters of SAF are in current forward
purchase agreements by airlines globally.
However due to issues of scale and yet to be optimized processes, some sustainable aviation fuel production
pathways are more expensive than fossil Jet A/A1. Risks for investment in production infrastructure can be
mitigated by carefully designed policy to encourage the development of SAF production capacity.
According to Shri. Rajiv Pratap Rudy, President, Aero Club of India & Hon'ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Government of India “Given the exponential growth of air traffic & despite the anticipated efficiency
innovations to airframes, engines, aerodynamics and flight operations, there is no end in sight, even many
decades out, to rapid growth in CO2 emissions from air travel and airfreight. Unless market constraints are put in
place, the growth in aviation's emissions will result in the sector's emissions amounting to all or nearly the entire
annual global CO2 emissions budget by mid-century.”
Shri. Milind Mahajan, Vice President, Aero Club of India added “Changing the fuel source is one of the only few
options the aviation industry has for reducing its carbon footprint. As per NASA a 50% aviation biofuel mixture
can cut air pollution caused by air traffic by 50-70%. Second generation sustainable biofuels (sustainable aviation
fuels) that do not compete with food supplies nor are major consumers of prime agricultural land or fresh water
have thus become a focus point of the industry.
In the backdrop of the above, the Aero Club of India (ACI), a registered non-profit organization established in 1927 & the apex body of all the flying clubs, gliding clubs and aero sports organisations in India organised the maiden edition of The Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel Summit (GSAFS) on 28th January 2019 at the Shangri-La, EROS Hotel, New Delhi.
Themed “Decarbonizing Aviation: Vision 2035”, GSAFS 2019 brought together over 150 stakeholders including
policy makers, airlines, fuel suppliers, technology providers, researchers & others to build consensus on the
actions needed to move forward, defining clear areas of collaboration including policies for market development,
innovations, research, cost reduction, commercialization & large scale deployment of biojet fuels.

opportunities and challenges in both the development & deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels.
Correspondingly, new strategies and a decision support framework could be recommended for improving
capacities and supply chains.”
Mr. Jeffery Skeer, Senior Programme Officer - Technology Cooperation, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlighted that “the Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel Summit engages the collective experience
& expertise of regulators, airlines, aircraft manufacturers, fuel producers, technology licensors and research
organizations to discuss, deliberate, share & learn the best of practices and leadership traits that would drive the
global aviation industry to a carbon free future.”
Capt. Pankul Mathur, Council Member, Aero Club of India stressed that “whilst numerous multi-stakeholder
initiatives exists across the world aiming to advance the deployment of sustainable aviation fuels, The Global
Sustainable Aviation Fuels Summit, the only conference of its type in India, would keep building consensus on the
actions needed for production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuels in India, inline with Hon'ble Prime
Minister's vision of reducing imported crude consumption by 10%.”
In line with Aero Club of India's vision to facilitate stakeholder's analysis and decisions on policy frameworks and
initiatives within the global frameworks of sustainable aviation including promotion of skill, proficiency and safety
in aeronautics, Ms. Anisha Suresh, Secretary General, Aero Club of India, in her concluding remarks, emphasized “the need for commitment from executive leadership, to implement world class strategies, in
deployment of sustainable aviation fuels, for a greener future.”
