Director’s MessageKGIC’s 2009 Summer Camp, “Global Leaders”, was a great success thanks to the wonderful students and teachers that participated. In the class, students had the opportunity to study English and learn what it takes to be a leader in society. One of the best parts of KGIC’s summer camp is the after school activities and field trips. This year, students enjoyed trips to science world, the waterslides, and an overnight camping trip. They also had the opportunity to visit the museum and go hiking at Grouse Mountain. Canada is famous for its beautiful mountains, lakes, and forests, and our students always love experiencing Canada’s beauty. Life with the homestay families was also a wonderful way for students to learn about Canadian culture and practice speaking English with Canadians. We hope that this summer was full of fun and learning and that each one of you returned home with great memories of your time in Canada. Hope to see you next year!

My First Day in Canada by Michael (Huang, Jia Fang)

Yesterday was a very special day. It was my first in Canada. It took

us ten hours to get here from China. On the way to Canada many

people slept, but not me, I was too excited to sleep, so I played

cards with my friend, Howard. We didn’t sleep that night, but I

didn’t feel tired. After such a long time, finally we got here. I felt

like everything had changed. There were more houses and fewer

buildings. It was much cleaner than China. There were more trees

and less people here. It was also colder than China. Walking on the

streets, I found that most of the people spoke English. The roads

were wider than China. And last but not least, the money and the

coins were different. At noon, my host parents picked me up and

took me to my new house. They were kind, friendly, and they had a

nine year old son, Avery. He was very lovely and active. He can play

soccer and hockey very well. He showed me around their house and

arranged for me to sleep in his bedroom. There was a bunk bed and

a desk. The dinner was delicious and the drinks were fresh. Soon

I loved this place, this beautiful place. I had a wonderful time on

that first day! The next day, I woke by the birds singing, and I began

to miss my parents. I missed their faces. I missed the food they

cooked for me, and I missed them waking me up. I missed everything

they did for me. At that time, I promised myself that I would study

hard here for my parents and the many things they did for me. I also

realized another day had come...

My First Day in Canadaby Lee, Chan Woo

I came to Canada. Canada is very hot. The northern region is very cold. Canada is very big and many people live here. I don’t like Korea, but I like Canada.

Vancouver Field Tripby Evan (Lai, Yen Chen)

Yesterday, we ate lunch. It was yummy! We went through China Town. We saw a steam clock that rang every four and half minutes. It uses steam to work. We rode the school bus to the park. We took a picture. We saw totem poles. It is big and interesting. We then went to the store, and later got on the bus. We rode the bus to the mountain. We saw raccoons. We went to the shop. I liked this Vancouver Field Trip because we saw ships, caterpillars, and the ocean! We saw all of Vancouver. It is enormous! We rode the school bus back to school, but everyone was very tired and slept on the trip.

A Day at the Burnaby Village Museum by Henry (Lai, Yen Hao)

I took a bus to the Burnaby Village Museum yesterday. When I got there, I decided to see the train first. Then I went to see the blacksmith. He said a lot about the engine, and he let me pull on the train’s horn. It was fun! Then I went to see the old theater. The movie was about racing cars, and it was funny! Then we went to the bank, where I wrote a ticket that could have gotten me money a long time ago. Then I went to the Chinese medicine store. I saw many different kinds of Chinese medicine. Then I went to see the school. It is always ‘ladies first’. We need to cut our finger nails everyday and were not allowed to wear jewelry. It was interesting. Then we went to the train station where there was a smoking and a no smoking area. The chairs in the smoking area were made of wood and were easy to clean. The chairs in the non-smoking area could not be cleaned very easily. I had a nice day at Burnaby Village Museum!

26

A Day at the Burnaby Village Museum by Joey (Xu, Jia Yi)

I felt happy yesterday because I went to the Burnaby Village Museum. It showed us the history of Canada. The pictures in the shelves were very interesting. I saw a show on ancient Canada when I entered the museum. There were many things in the shop such as toys and food. Then I went to a railway shop. The old motorcycle was so strange that I hardly believed it was one. There was a cinema near the railway shop. We saw a Charlie Chaplin movie. I laughed so much that I got a stomach ache. I started to feel unhappy soon after because of a crazy woman in the school house of 1945. She said that my fingernail was very long and she repeated the sentence, “You are the gentleman,” again and again. It made me feel uncomfortable. She was terrible even though I felt she was better than Louke, our dear teacher. Though she was terrible, the museum was still great! The trip was still wonderful and I was very happy! I wouldn’t change it at all, and that’s the truth!

A Day at the Burnaby Village Museum by Jimmy (Pan, Pei Xin)

Yesterday, I went to the Burnaby Village Museum. First, I went to a small house. There was a person in the house! He was talking about the house, but someone didn’t listen to him. They were taking photos and talking with each other. So the person got angry. He said that when he was talking, other people who are talking or taking photos would be thrown out. When he was finished talking, we could take photos. I saw many old things there. Next, I went to another small house. There was a bicycle and a motorcycle in the house. There was an old car outside the house. Then I went to an old bank. There was a woman in the bank. She was talking about how to save money in the bank. After that I went to a big house. There were many old appliances there, and I saw a big steam engine. It can drive a big machine. Finally, I went to a school. There was only one classroom in the school. All the students studied in it. I went home at half past three in the afternoon. I had a happy day, but I was really tired!

29

Page 32: Global Leaders Summer Program 2009

Yesterday, we ate lunch. After lunch, we got on the bus to the Burnaby Village Museum. First, we went to Tom’s house. Next, we saw the tram which had no electricity. Then we went to the post office. Someone was playing checkers. We saw a squirrel running. Then, we went to church. We were really happy!

30

Page 33: Global Leaders Summer Program 2009

Burnaby Village MuseumBy Olivia Bell

There are a lot of places in Burnaby Village Museum. Most of them are good. There’s a bank and about four people would work in the one we saw. There was also a school with only one classroom and all the grades shared the same room. There was also a church and a really cool theater for our times. There were many other places such as a tram, a general store, a Chinese medicine store, a place that taught me about lacrosse and a really cool carousel. I loved the log cabin but my favorite was the old printer as it was really interesting.

First of all, we saw a movie about bears that was really interesting. Then we saw a movie about humming birds. They are small and fast, drink sugar water and the nectar of flowers. Then we saw two bears, the larger one was named Kuala, and the smaller one, Grinder. They were really fun bears who liked to swim in the lake. After that, we went to see a lumberjack show that was done by three men and a woman. It was a really nice show, and we had lots of fun! Then we went to the First Nations Show where we learned about their dances, shows, and culture. Lastly, we saw a really interesting bird show, here we learned and saw five different types of birds. My favorite was the eagle. After all of that, we went down the mountain on the gondola, and then returned to our school.

Next, we went to the area to see the bears. The teacher told me they were Kuala and Grinder. They care about each other, find food by the trees, and use the pond to wash up. At the top of the mountain, we saw snow! After that, we went to see the lumberjack show. They have a very interesting competition. Finally, we went to see a First Nations dance, but I couldn’t understand it. The bird show was the most interesting. The trainer trained the birds very well, and he showed them to us. I really like Playland as I went on this ride called the music ride that was really fun. I also went on the roller coaster, bumper cars and pirate ship. I went into the arcade where you buy coins, play games and win prizes. I also went to the game section. I played a game that you needed to squirt water into the target and I won. I also played another game that you use a gun and shoot three times. I had one more left. If I knocked all three I would have won a mini-bike but I won a dog and a seal. Playland was very fun.

We arrived back at the school. I was a little sad because it was Kimnamgyu’s last day. He was one of my best friends so I will miss him a lot. Then today is Stella, Sherry, Jenny and Dari’s last day. Tomorrow is my last day. Today is our final test so I hope I do a good job. I don’t know if I will write my journal. This was a wonderful vacation, I had so much fun and the time passed by very quickly. I really hope to see my friends in a couple of years.

Last Wednesday, we went camping. First, we played games with water balloons, garbage bags, and eggs & spoons. We also had a race, played step on the balloon, and find the treasure. These games were so interesting that we played again and again! Then we ate lunch and went to the beach. The beach was very big, but mostly muddy. We found rocks, shells, and jelly fish babies. They were so lovely. After that, we went back to our cabin and ate dinner. We had some Indian chicken and rice. After that I took a bath, while the girls made dragonflies with Kelly. The dragonflies were so nice! I took home two colorful ones! After we finished playing with the dragonflies, we watched a movie, ‘Night at the Museum’. It was so funny! This was a celebration of our classmate Renee’s birthday. We ate cake, popcorn, and watched the movie. It made us laugh and laugh. Then we went to bed. My roommates Daisy, Lilian, Alex, and I talked about each other’s lives and love interests! I loved this camping trip!

We went camping on Wednesday at Crescent Beach. First, we participated in a sack race, a dizzy relay, an egg in spoon relay, and balloon pop! It was sport’s day. My team’s name was the ‘Blue Monsters’ and the other team was the ‘Blue Sharks’. We won the game and then we played a scavenger hunt. Olivia, Andrea, and Andy won this game. Next, we played at the beach and made dragon fly magnets. It was fun! Later, we saw a movie, “Night at the Museum 2”. I had seen it before. The next day, we went to the water slides. I rode them many times and then went into the hot tub. I lost my ear plugs in the water. So I was sad for a bit, but still having lots of fun. After swimming, I played Frisbee with Masaki. He was a very nice teacher. He bought me a water bottle and didn’t let me pay him back. Camping was lots of fun!

After playing these three games, we ate pepperoni pizza for lunch. After lunch, I participated in a sack race, a shoe relay, a water relay, a clothes relay, a balloon pop, and a scavenger hunt. It was lots of fun! At last, the games ended, and we went to the beach. I made a sand castle with Ashley, Jenny, Yung-Min, and Cherie. It wasn’t perfect, but we decorated it with stones and shell fish. Pouring water at the beach was very hard because the tide was very low. I was very hungry. I ate chicken, corn, rice, and salad for dinner. It was very delicious, and I ate them all. For dessert, I ate vanilla ice cream and apple pie. After dinner, I saw “The Night at the Museum 2.” It was the first time I’d seen it, so I didn’t understand some of it. But it was very funny! The next day, I rode the water slides. I rode the small slide, Blackhole, and River Run. I went inside the hot tub because it was freezing! When I was on the River Run, I hurt my head on a bump. However, the camping was lots of fun, and I really enjoyed it!

And at last she said, “Close your ears!”, and I covered mine. Then she lit a fire and popped the balloons very loudly. Next, I saw a movie called Scream Play. I thought it would be fun, but it was just riding rollercoaster and screaming a lot. It was boring! It was a lot to imagine being on a rollercoaster. I did sometimes, but mostly not. And we saw the screaming contest. I didn’t do it. I don’t know her name, but there was one girl who was really loud when screaming. I thought, this was my greatest trip in Canada so far! Ferry Ride to VictoriaPark Yoon Seo (Cherie Park)I like the ferry ride to Victoria. The ferry is a very big boat. Victoria is a city on Vancouver Island. It is the capital city of B.C. On the ferry we went to the gift store and I bought food. We also saw a whale.

Yesterday, we went to Victoria on the BC Ferry. We went to the BC Royal Museum, the legislature, and Butchart Gardens. In the museum, I saw mummies from Egypt and jewelry. In the gardens, I saw many flowers, tadpoles, a dear, and a cougar. I was really tired on my way back because we saw so much!

A Day in Victoria by Rick (Tsai, Tsung Tse)

Yesterday, we went to Victoria by ferry. When we were on the ferry, we went around and played. It was a really big boat that made me excited. Once in Victoria, we went to the museum. We saw many old things, and we saw TV programs that made one of my classmates want to be on TV. My favorite thing in the museum was a very old mummy. It was very cool especially because I hadn’t seen one before. Secondly, we went to a government building and ate lunch there. After that we went to Butchart Gardens, where we saw many flowers. Time flew by real quick here, and I felt if we had more time, we could have seen many more beautiful flowers. And then we went back to Vancouver by the ferry. On the ferry, we played hide & seek, but I couldn’t find anyone and gave up. As it turned out, they found me! After the ferry arrived, we got on a bus. On the bus, we played the telephone game. It was so funny that I couldn’t stop laughing on our way back to school. What a happy day!
