LEADERSHIP

What could be more important than preparing talented musicians to become the community changemakers of tomorrow? What could be more exciting than achieving this mission in a way that allows participants to serve their home communities from grassroots programs in the most remote parts of the world? This is the multi-directional power of The Global Leaders Program (GLP). As those who have seen first-hand what music education can do to transform lives in our home communities, we could not be prouder to serve as Chairs of the GLP Advisory Council.

The report detailed in the following pages presents a glimpse of the 2020 academic year. It highlights the learning of the Cohort in our online classroom, taught by the greatest minds in a variety of pertinent fields, as well as the growth that happened on the ground and virtually through Fieldwork. The Global Leaders Program aspires to achieve what no other music initiative in the world does – to instill the tools of community development, social enterprise, and teaching artistry that allows world-class performers to dream big. We have no doubt that many of these emerging talents will someday be giants in the growing world of social development through music. As this year comes to a close, we look forward to the next – from our achievements and shortcomings in order to continue increasing the value the program offers to participants and communities.

The Global Leaders Program grows out of The Orchestra of the Americas Group as a mechanism for providing much needed professional training to top orchestral musicians, while assisting community music programs in the more than 30 countries since the program’s launch in 2012. As Chairman of The OA Group, we could not be more proud to serve as the lead institution behind the incredibly meaningful initiative that The Global Leaders Program represents. Thank you to all—in particular GLP lead financial partner the Hildegard Behrens Foundation—whose belief, support, and hard work led to a successful 2020. We look forward to an even brighter future for the Program in 2021.

ACADEMICS

2020 was a year of exceptional academic growth for The Global Leaders Program, marked by cross-cultural and intergenerational exchanges with GLP alumni and new program faculty, which enhanced the curriculum in ways that proved highly relevant for the 2020 Cohort.

A highlight of the 2020 curriculum was the in-person module curated by Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, titled Cultural Agency: Literacy, Innovation, and Citizenship. This module, directed by Harvard Professor Dr. Doris Sommer, combined applied aesthetics workshops with small-team organizational consulting sessions to create a hybrid learning experience that propelled the growth of Cohort Members as cultural agents in the space of social innovation.

2021 promises significant growth for The Global Leaders Program. With a consolidated core curriculum, we look forward to the opportunity of creating new academic units that facilitate learning in complementary content of interest for music changemakers. The envisioned new units show remarkable range; examples include Policy Design & Public Leadership, Data Analysis and Storytelling, Psychology of Collaboration, and Emerging Technologies for Applied Impact. In addition, this year’s high-level priorities guiding the process of curriculum revisions are a focus on content retention strategies, cross-cultural synchronous group activities, and new live interaction opportunities made possible by a more sophisticated online conferencing platform. We look forward to seeing how these improvements will reshape the learning experiences of 2021 Cohort Members.

2020 Fieldwork began with the Third Annual Residence in Chile. While on the ground in Chile, GLP Cohort Members worked in small teams across Chile with more than 700 beneficiaries from regional music education initiatives.

Following Chile, while the remainder of the 2020 Fieldwork journey for Cohort Members was dramatically reshaped by COVID-19, the halt of global travel also opened new horizons online, transitioning what would have otherwise been ground activities led by Cohort Members for partner organizations around the world to distance-based collaborations that connected more countries and more communities than ever before. Citing just one example, Hazel Ross (United Kingdom | 2020 GLP) led 10 weeks of virtual coaching sessions with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra. The outpouring of Cohort-led engagement for global Fieldwork Partners online led to the launch of The Community Workshop Series in June. This new component of the Program, which debuted at Sweden’s Side By Side Festival, has involved more than 50 Cohort-led sessions over a six-week period for GLP partner institutions on five continents.

As a complement to Fieldwork experiences, 2020 Cohort Members also had the opportunity to delve deep into local contexts through the research and creation of in-depth Case Study assignments. These projects offered a forum for Cohort Members to translate learnings from Fieldwork communities back home to their individual professional areas of interest and aspiration.

This combined landscape in 2020, while challenging in many ways, has opened new doors, initiatives, channels, and relationships to build upon in 2021.

FULL COHORT RESIDENCE

PROJECT SUMMARYA cornerstone of The Global Leaders Program’s approach to readying the next generation of leaders in music is a core belief in the power of the artist-innovator and social entrepreneur to make a profoundly positive impact on human lives. As communities around the world search for concrete solutions to increasingly complex and dynamic social, environmental, and economic challenges, the role of innovative artist-entrepreneurs to engage with, draw attention to, promote discourse around, and envision productive paths through these challenges is paramount.

For its Third Annual Nationwide Residence in January 2020, this powerful community-focused component of the work of the artist-entrepreneur has never been more important to the efforts of The Global Leaders Program in Chile, as 50 leading social innovators in music from 26 countries of the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania traveled to work in a nation in the process of asking itself deep questions about its social and economic future.

Committed to supporting Chile today and throughout its future, the 2020 Cohort of The Global Leaders Program, together with a range of international Faculty and Advisors from world-class institutions including Harvard University, worked across more than a dozen Chilean communities from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia to empower local NGO leaders, educators, students, and parents. The goal of these people-to-people interactions and collaborations was to support the arts and culture as vital components of an engaged, empathetic, productive, and connected Chilean society. Beyond contributing their time and diverse expertise, GLP Cohort Members also had the opportunity to learn from Chile’s rich traditions, with the goal that through this Residence, connections between Chile’s music community and international networks of support and exchange were cultivated and strengthened.

“Fundación PLADES enthusiastically welcomed the 2020 GLP Cohort to the region of Los Lagos For us, it was a great pride to host these rising leaders in Frutillar, who contributed to the creative learning of many local initiatives that share their commitment to social innovation.”

Tomás CorTese, exeCuTive DireCTor, FunDaCión PLaDes

“The participation of The Global Leaders Program, not only as trainers at our annual music camps in January, but through their long-term commitment to the development of our project, has been fundamental to the growth of our students and teachers.”

PART I: MODULEThe project began with a six-day intensive Module, lasting from January 4 - 11, in the Chilean community of Frutillar, recently named a UNESCO Creative City of Music.

Led by Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS), GLP Cohort Members led and collaborated in a series of activities aimed at furthering the sustainable development of the town and the surrounding region. GLP Cohort Members and visiting Faculty brought transferable perspectives on ways to better connect practical problem-solving tools from the arts and humanities to the civic development of community. The GLP group contributed to conversations on how the creative process can drive innovation and civic engagement in everything from education to medicine, from science to law, and from politics to business.

All GLP-led activities unfolded under the guidance of Harvard Faculty Dr. Doris Sommer, Director of the Cultural Agents Initiative, together with Enrique Márquez, Harvard University’s Music Department Manager of Events, Carlos Ramírez Sánchez, Universidad Adolfo Ibañez’s Director of International Relations, and additional visiting lecturers.

INNOVATION LABS WITH FUNDACIÓN PLADES NGOsAdditionally, Cohort Members broke into small teams to work hand-in-hand with the Fundación PLADES network of local initiatives aimed at social innovation, to promote creative learning opportunities and increased community impact, while exploring institutional processes within these organizations. These sessions looked to better understand the challenges these NGOs are working to address and the processes they can harness to work toward solving these challenges, calling upon critical learnings from The Global Leaders Program curriculum and the shared experience brought together by international perspectives of Cohort Members.

On the evening of January 10, all Fundación PLADES-supported initiatives came together for a forum where Cohort Teams presented a summary of their work to the community at large. Cohort Members shared a series of observations, insights, and outcomes from each of the site workshops, moderated by José Feuereisen, Sociocultural Director of Fundación PLADES, and presented to a panel of sharks including Matias Perez Cruz, President - Empresas Gasco SA, Alejandra Kantor, Executive Director - FOJI, Nicola Schiess, President - Teatro del Lago, and David Fogelson, Cultural Attaché - Embassy of the United States in Chile.

PART II: FIELDWORKFollowing the Frutillar Module, beginning on January 11, GLP Cohort Members traveled on a series of field assignments across Chile. The Teams spent a week leading pedagogical and musical activities intended to support the development of regional partners’ music education initiatives including Corporación de Adelanto de Panguipulli, Fundación Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI), Fundación Arauco, Fundación Violeta, Toki Rapa Nui, Conservatorio de Música Universidad Austral de Valdivia, Corporación Cultural de Peñalolén, Conservatorio de Musica y Bellas Artes, the Enrique Soro Music School, and the Orquesta Juvenil de Santo Domingo. Cohort Members mentored 1,000+ youth, in addition to engaging local music teachers in instructive sectionals, rehearsals, clinics, and other activities intended to benefit community music initiatives, while exposing the Cohort to a variety of new perspectives, references, and practices.

SECTOR ASSISTANCE CENTER (continued) FINANCIAL SUMMARY

eTRAINING FOR MUSIC SCHOOLSThe GLP’s professional-grade learning and video conference technology, able to accommodate 500+ simultaneous participants, was shared on request with any music organization or school seeking temporary large-scale remote teaching or live communication tools. The GLP Administrative Team also provided voluntary guidance to music institutions interested in instituting a remote curriculum, having provided support to schools from India to Israel, from Panama to the United Kingdom since the start of the global pandemic.

PEER EDUCATORS TASK FORCEThe GLP convened a twice-weekly task force discussion in March and April that brought together the power of a diverse group of music educators, social entrepreneurs, and professional musicians to share first-hand experiences and sector-specific peer advice for organizational strategies to cope with the widespread impact of COVID-19 on local communities, schools, and social services. Decision-makers and educators across the music sector are facing complex challenges that require unprecedented responses. This process can benefit from informed discussion with a global network of peers.

FINANCIAL SUMMARYFINANCIAL SUMMARY

The GLP’s financial performance for the 2020 fiscal year ended September 30 is provided in accordance with GAAP accounting conventions. REVENUES

The financial profile of the 2020 Global Leaders Program (FY20) reflects a lean initiative where the impact of each earned dollar is multiplied by a blend of public/private in-kind support from fieldwork partners and scholarship subsidy from private supporters. Cohort-sponsored tuition and in-kind investment from Fieldwork Partners together accounted for 82% of the total revenue of $351,174 USD, representing the cornerstone of the program’s financial resilience in 2020. Despite an overall growth in 2020, this figure was less than had been originally forecast due to the impact of COVID-19, which required all Field Assignments between March and June to be converted from in-person to distance-based international projects. Despite this temporary financial setback to Fieldwork, contributed income from a range of individual and institutional philanthropic supporters in 2020 also bolstered continued overall revenue growth, led by a $25,000 FY20 investment from the Hildegard Behrens Foundation.

EXPENSES

A growth in combined 2020 funding allowed a number of enhancements to be made towards strengthening the Cohort learning experience. These enhancements included the expansion of the Full Cohort Residence in Chile to involve a wider range of international faculty than in past years, along with the inclusion of New York University’s Social Enterprise Institute and The Longy School of Music at Bard College as added Curating Academic Institutions in 2020. GLP administrative roles also expanded in 2020 to provide more dedicated Academic and Fieldwork management, including the addition of a new role dedicated to, among other areas, the development of a public conference arm of The Global Leaders Program, launched in March 2020, with promising results and great forward potential. The result of these combined expenses, totaling $344,803 USD for the year, helped to ensure a high impact experience for the 2020 Cohort, and, through a continued focus on organic word-of-mouth advertising, contributed to attracting the most well-qualified group of applicants to date for the incoming 2021 Cohort.

FUTURE GROWTH

Looking ahead to 2021, projected continued growth of earned and charitable revenue will continue to build the program’s sustainability. This benchmark is supported and made possible by key operational investments made incrementally over FY19 and FY20 that has resulted in marked increases in the perceived and real value that the program offers to both its participants and partners.
