A flammable liquid is any liquid having a f lashpoint below 100deg F (38degC) However the exception to this is any mixture having components with f lashpoints of 100deg F or higher when such components make up at least 99 of the mixturersquos volume The flashpoint is the lowest temperature at which a f lammable liquid will give off enough vapor to ignite briefly when exposed to a f lame

Flammable liquids are referred to as Class 1 Liquids Class 1 Liquids are separated into the following three categories

C L A S S 1 A - Liquids that have flashpoints below 73deg F (228deg C) and a boiling point below 100deg F (378deg C) Examples of this class are Ethyl Ether and Pentane

C L A S S 1 B - Liquids that have flashpoints below 73deg F (228deg C) and a boiling point of at least 100deg F (378deg C) Examples of this class are Acetone Gasoline and MEK

C L A S S 1 C - Liquids that have flashpoints above 73deg F (228deg C)and below 100deg F (378deg C) Examples of this are Turpentine and Xylene

C O M B U S T I B L E S

A combustible is a liquid having a f lashpoint of at least 100deg F (378deg C)

Combustibles are divided into two classes

C L A S S I I C O M B U S T I B L E S - Liquids that have a f lashpoint of at least 100deg F (378deg C) and below 140deg F (60deg C) However the exception to this is any mixture having components with f lashpoints of 200deg F (933deg C) when such components make up at least 99 of the total volume of the mixture Examples of this class are Kerosene and most Oil Based Paints

C L A S S I I I C O M B U S T I B L E S - Liquids with f lashpoints of at least 140deg F (60deg C)

Class III combustibles are divided into these two subcategories

Class IIIA Combustibles - Liquids having a f lashpoint of at least 140deg F (60deg C) and below 200deg F (933deg C) However the exception to this is any mixture having components with f lashpoints of 200deg F (933deg C) or higher when such components make up at least 99 of the total volume of the mixture An example of this is Mineral Spir its

Class IIIB Combustibles - Liquids having a f lashpoint of at least 200deg F (933deg C) Examples of this class are Hydraulic BrakeTransmission Fluids and Lubrication Oils

W H A T A B O U T F I R E R A T I N G S Fire ratings may be required depending on the location of your chemical storage building in relation to surrounding structures The Non Fire-Rated buildings in the CHEMLOC TM DRUMLOC TM and TURFLOC TM lines are compliant when you have the ability to locate your storage more than 50 feet away from other structures

The 2-hour fire-rated line FIRELOC TM is designed to be placed within 10 to 30 feet of existing structures andor property setbacks

Our 4-hour fire-rated SUPERLOC TM buildings can be located within 10rsquo or even within existing structures

So what is the difference in the building itself that makes it a fire rated building

The answer is in the wall construction The diagrams to the right illustrate the fire-rated designs we manufacture
