An International Perspective

It has been an exciting year for internationalization at Humber.

This year, Humber was home to more than 3,800 international students from more than 100 countries around the world – and as this report will show, providing a high quality education for our increasingly diverse student body remains one of our key priorities.

We continue to support the unique needs of our international students with activities and services designed to help them adapt to life in a new country, including trips, art exhibits, on-campus events and get-togethers. Many of these initiatives bring together international and study-abroad students with faculty and the wider Humber community, creating a truly intercultural learning experience for all.

In April 2016, we marked the 20th anniversary of the Humber-Ningbo program, which is our longest-standing international partnership. Together, with other successful partnerships, including over a decade with the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality & Tourism (NKUHT), we have produced more than 1,500 graduates with highly valuable international experience.

Working with our international partners, we welcomed 20 government-funded students from Papua, Indonesia, and have also signed a similar agreement with the Bhutanese government. Our expanded outreach around the world, with potential new opportunities in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Panama, has certainly contributed to the richness and diversity of the Humber community.

The following pages will highlight some of our global successes over the past year and provide an update on the progress of our internationalization strategy. We are proud that so many students from so many countries have chosen to call Humber home. The institution is immeasurably enriched when education is approached from a truly global perspective, whether welcoming students here or encouraging international learning opportunities for our faculty, staff and domestic students.

A Learning Organization with a Global Focus

Internationalization is a fundamental priority for Humber.

At Humber, we recognize that the world is growing smaller, and that borders are no longer barriers to success. For both our domestic and international students, the ability to interact within a globally connected economy will represent a key skill as they progress through their careers.

To that end, internationalization is a fundamental priority for the institution – ensuring that our students, faculty and staff are interculturally aware and, having developed a global perspective, are ready to make meaningful contributions to the worldwide marketplace.

Because of these efforts, which were formalized in our Internationalization Strategy in 2013-2014, our students, staff and faculty are learning valuable intercultural, personal and technical skills that will help them become citizens of the world and truly able to embody Humber’s core values of excellence, student focus, innovation and respect – no matter where they live.

From classroom curricula to global opportunities to work and learning abroad, and from international partnerships to welcoming more than 3,800 international students to our classrooms, Humber’s commitment to making globally-focused learning accessible to the entire community is truly something to be proud of.

International Education Week & Global Lens Photography Exhibit

From November 16-20, 2015, the International Centre hosted International Education Week (IEW) on both North and Lakeshore campuses. Through interactive activities, entertainment, language cafes, and a globally themed art exhibit, IEW gives the Humber community the opportunity to learn about various countries and their unique cultures.

The Global Lens Photography Exhibit is a visual demonstration of student learning and faculty/staff experiences through study and work opportunities. Exhibit visitors were invited to contribute their journeys to a large-scale map, share their views on global citizenship, and participate in creating a global tapestry.

8

Humber Goes Global provides an opportunity for participants to learn about various countries and their unique characteristics including food, traditional clothing and language. This past year, Korea, Pakistan, Peru, Taiwan, and Ukraine were featured at booths at both Humber campuses. Students who lived in, travelled to, or studied these countries shared their personal stories and cultural insights with the Humber community.

Language Cafés in Mandarin (China), Gujarati(India),andFrench(Mauritius)were offered during IEW at both campuses. Participants had the opportunity to learn a few words in a different language and share their cultural interests.

Students who have worked or studied abroad (including international students who are studying in Canada) shared their experiences during Stories from Home & Abroad.

Fashion Students Fly to London

From Topshop to Burberry to Selfridges & Co., The Business School’s Fashion Management degree students went behind the scenes in London, England’s most famous fashion stores.

Led by Bruce Sinclair, Program Coordinator, students from each of the four years took advantage of this unique opportunity. “The breadth of knowledge students have gained in the program along with everything they learned in London really rounded out their educational experience.” Sinclair says.

Service-Learning in Costa Rica

Thanks to the tremendous support provided by Community Colleges for International Development (CCID), Humber was awarded the prestigious Harris-WoffordGlobalServiceFellowship in 2015-16. This allowed Dr. Philip Burge and Dr. Rai Reece, faculty members from the School of Social and Community Services, to accompany 15 Humber students on a service-learning trip to Cartago, Costa Rica. This trip allowed them to critically engage and work with social service programs in Costa Rica with an emphasis on participatory learning and cultural immersion. Students learned how to overcome language barriers and make connections through active play and art activities.

Nicaragua Service Learning Trip

Fifteen Humber students travelled to Nicaragua to gain a fresh perspective on community development.

During the trip, they were able to connect with local community members in rural villages while exploring the most spectacular beaches of the Pacific Coast and conducting valuable service work. This was an authentic volunteer experience combined with adventure, exploration and cultural immersion.

For faculty member Sherri Branscombe, the highlight of the trip was seeing the change in the students. “Not only their perspective but also their career path,” she says.

Humber is committed to providing faculty the support and the tools necessary to teach in a diverse classroom and encourage global citizenship.

Staff & Faculty Advancements

The Culturally Inclusive Educator Certificate has now been launched as an online program. Comprised of five courses, it helps to strengthen and enhance participants’ intercultural knowledge, communication, curriculum development and differentiated teaching skills when teaching and supporting international higher education students. Upon completion of the certificate, participants will have developed a framework of actions they can integrate into their own practice.

Facilitators of the Culturally Inclusive Educator Certificate led a pre-conference workshop at Community Colleges for International Development's (CCID) annual conference attended by 50 participants from community colleges across the US with resounding success. The program is now being rolled out to other community colleges across the US.

Connect Program: Academic Workshops for International Students

One of the goals of the Connect Program (collaboratively organized by the International Centre and the Centre for Teaching and Learning) is to improve the academic, social and psychological performance of international students as they transition to life in Canada and at Humber.

Join and Make a Difference

This project offers the opportunity to Humber full- and part-time faculty and staff to volunteer supporting international students. They are encouraged to be part of a “Welcome Team” that will engage with new international students through informal, personalized and friendly social interactions.

The volunteer commitment requires volunteers to:

1. Attend the Mix & Mingle session.

2. Attend at least two (2) Connect Program organized events during each term (e.g. Mix & Mingle, International Café, and Potluck and Cupcake Decorating Event, etc.).

3. Meet with their mentee at least 2 times per term outside of Connect Program organized events.

Faculty involvement and the internationalization of curriculum is a key driver in the successful implementation of Humber’s Internationalization strategy. In 2015, the International Centre secured funding to engage up to 15 faculty members across the institution on a mission to Denmark in an effort to maximize the impact of partnerships with our counterparts across the Atlantic. Humber's top faculty were selected through a competitive process from across the institution.

“Each of the partner schools we collaborate with in Denmark bring something different to the table – ranging from strengths in design, health and wellness, multi-media, entrepreneurship and innovation, film, social innovation and fashion,” said Diane Simpson.

Once in Denmark, faculty set off to fulfill their individual missions, all coming to the same conclusion, opportunity lives in abundance in the “land of light”.

Proposed ideas ranged from traditional exchanges providing cross-cultural experiences to new initiatives including ‘virtual exchanges’ where students could benefit from an international experience without ever leaving their own classroom.

“Connecting classrooms would create an accessible and enriching experience for all students” says Brad Herd, Humber faculty, The Business School.

In search of a collaborative research project,“HowtoGlobalizeLeadershipCurriculumatHumber,”TedGlennnotedthat, “they have a completely different interdisciplinary approach, imagine what would happen if we integrate components of that model here at Humber?”

Since returning in May, a number of specific initiatives have been formalized into articulation agreements, semester exchanges and faculty collaborations.

The IYIP project culminated in a community awareness event where interns had the opportunity to educate guests on their projects and share their experiences through a panel discussion and photo exhibit. It was a perfect venue for interns to share their experiences and regional perspectives on challenges and opportunities in international development with a packed room of 120+ guests. The photo exhibit allowed interns to showcase the unique geographical, ethnic, historical, and political features of their host countries through the eyes of a development practitioner.
