The Medical Research Fellowship at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is a year-long program which provides intense research training, clinical learning, and residency placement support. This offering is currently available through the Weill Cornell Medical College Department of Internal Medicine, and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Department of Pediatrics. The goal of the program is to expose fellows to research and healthcare delivery and training at a U.S. Academic Health Center. Our program will provide professional development and leadership skills that will be instrumental for entry into residency programs in the United States.

The program will begin with a week-long orientation including on-boarding procedures, core lectures and workshops, and a hospital tour. The curriculum includes the following components:

1. Research Training:Mentorship on a Research Project – A faculty member will be assigned to mentor each fellow based on the fellow’s research interests. This mentorship will include regular meetings with the mentor (at least once per week). Mentors will guide fellows on all aspects of their research including: writing study proposals, receiving Institutional Review Board approval, and conducting research. Bio-statistics Training – To build a strong foundation in clinical research, fellows will have a weekly 1-2 hour basic bio-statistical training and guidance session regarding data mining, data streamlining and analysis associated with their research projects.

2. Clinical Learning:Observership – Fellows will participate in clinical care as observers. Through activated observation (no hands-on training) the fellow will be challenged to learn from each physician-patient encounter. Grand Rounds and Lectures – Each fellow will attend regular grand rounds and lectures in their home department. Clinical Tutorials – Fellows will meet weekly with a clinical tutor to discuss cases and hone their clinical reasoning skills.

3. Residency Application Support:Residency Application Advising – Each fellow will be assigned an advisor with expertise in residency placement. Application preparation – Fellows will be coached on CV and personal statement preparation. Mock interviews – After attending a workshop on residency interviews, each fellow will have the opportunity for a least two mock interviews with faculty who interview residency candidates. These faculty members will give feedback and coach the fellows on interviewing strategies.

4. Assessment:Evaluation – Fellows will be evaluated by their research mentors and clinical tutors on a quarterly basis. They will meet with the program director for feedback and updates on their progress. Written evaluations and progress reports will be generated for each fellow’s file and shared with the sponsor. Fellows are also given the opportunity to provide feedback on the fellowship.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least 2 months prior to the intended start date. To apply, please combine all of the items listed below into one PDF document and email it to [email protected].
