Global Green: A Welcomed NeighborCommunity Development and Climate Action Center Backgrounder
For nearly 20 years, Global Green USA has been a national leader in advocating for smart
solutions to global warming including green building for affordable housing, schools, cities and
communities that save money, improve health and create green jobs.
Immediately after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Global Green made the Crescent City its
new target. Their first plan of action in the Crescent City was the Holy Cross Project. As a part
of this community project, the advocates of Global Green have make it a priority to inform and
educate the Lower Ninth Ward.
After building 5 single-family homes energy efficient homes, Global Green has moved on to
another project to positively impact this New Orleans community. With the planning of the
Community Development and Climate Action Center, Global Green will continue to extend their
mission in New Orleans.
Proposed facilities of the community center include: a retail store, caf, bank, visitors center,
conference spaces, climate research lab, and library. With a variety of facilities, this community
center plans to not only rebuild, but also unite the Holy Cross Neighborhood.
With the construction of the Community Development and Climate Action Center, Global Green
hopes to anchor an ongoing presence in New Orleans. Most importantly, the Center will create
new jobs, provide job training, incubate small business, and provide ongoing outreach andeducation on green building and renewable clean energy to daily visitors. On a larger scale, the
center will also help export knowledge to other cities. The advocates of Global Green hope this
center can serve as a catalyst for other sustainable living organizations and make the Holy Cross
project of green living, an example for the rest of the country.
