Many "right" things are covered in this edition.
We invite you to join us as we celebrate global engagement initiatives and congratulate our students for their marvelous accomplishments. As always, we would like to thank all of the contributors, including our students who are our reason for being.
Warmest wishes,
Dr. Wendy Haynes,

Global engagement is a key priority for Bridgewater State University (BSU). Through its academic and
administrative units, BSU offers high-quality global engagement programs and activities for students,
faculty and staff. Global engagement at BSU embodies three core values: Excellence, Opportunity &
Innovation. In 2001, the Office of International Programs was created in response to BSU's increasing
demand for international opportunities in teaching, learning and service. Dr. Edward W. Minnock,
former vice president for the Division of External Affairs, was a pioneer in expanding BSU's
international programming during the office's first decade. The name change reflects Dr. Minnock's
commitment to internationalizing BSU's campus and BSU's committment to global engagement.

Japan Now: Our Challenges, Our Opportunities, and Our Future
GLOBA L GA ZETTE, PA GE 3
On Wednesday April 11, 100 people filled the Maxwell Library Heritage
Room to hear a lecture by Mr. Rokuichiro Michii, Consul-General of
Japan in Boston, entitled: Japan Now: Our Challenges, Our Opportunities,
and Our Future. Dr. Wing-kai To, Academic Director of the Minnock
Institute for Global Engagement welcomed the audience, and Dr.
Wendy Haynes, Interim Assistant Provost for Global Engagement and
Senior International Officer gave opening remarks and introduced
Consul-General Michii, noting that "Bridgewater has a long and
enduring relationship with Japan." The relationship Dr. Haynes
referenced is one that dates back to 1875, when Shuji Isawa was sent to
the United States by the Japanese Ministry of Education to learn about
our educational system. Years later, Shuji went on to reform the
Japanese educational system in the areas of physical education, special
education, and teaching music. Consul-General Michii spoke candidly
about specific challenges, opportunities, and the future of Japan. The
lecture was sponsored by the Minnock Institute for Global Engagement.
