Make 2016 your year to hit up some of the biggest and best festivals that Europe has to offer.Kick off the year with the Venice Carnival in February. The largest of its kind in Italy, people come from around the globe to take part in the merriment of this masquerade celebration in which colourfully clad masked partygoers roam the streets. On 17th March, you can join the sea of green in Dublin, Ireland for pints of Guinness and jig dancing on St Patrick’s Day, before changing into orange for King’s Day in the Netherlands. In celebration of the royal family, hit up Amsterdam on 27th April to view the colourfully decorated boats on the famous canal.

Spain is definitely home to some of the world’s largest and most exciting festivals. Whether you’re looking for food fights, throwing firecrackers or running with giant bulls, Spain is sure to have you covered. The Spanish festival year starts in March with Las Fallas in Valencia, which involves one long street party with fire displays across five days and nights. La Batalla Del Vino, or Wine Fight, is held on 29th June in Haro, an area well

known for growing grapes and making wine. About two months later on 31st August is La Tomatina, essentially the world’s largest food fight with locals and tourists chucking tomatoes at one another in Buñol, near Valencia.

A festival trip to Spain would not be complete without the San Fermin Running of the Bulls festival in Pamplona. San Fermin is 6th – 14th July, with the Bull Run held every morning at 8am between 7th and 14th July.

Finally, when September rolls around, it’s time to head to Germany for the festival of all festivals: Oktoberfest. This 16-day beer celebration is held every year in Munich and attracts more than six million people from around the world! In 2016, Oktoberfest starts on 17th September.

Depending on which way you look at them, passports are either a symbol of freedom or an annoying book that dictates where you can and can’t go. The Stoke Travel Passport, on the other hand, is a thing of beauty.

The Stoke Travel Passport works like this: you choose the festivals you want to include on your passport from a list of 18 (and counting!). You get to spend three nights at each festival, including festival ticket (excluding BBK and Sziget), breakfast every day and dinner every night at each festival campsite, and free unlimited alcohol at all campsites. The passport is valid for 12 months and you get to decide the start date. You only need to let Stoke Travel know your desired arrival date seven days before, giving you the freedom to choose where and when you go. This doesn’t have the boundaries or strict schedule of a group tour, but you’re bound to meet some amazing and fun people at each destination.

Now, what about the festivals and trips to choose from? Well, they’re some of the best in Europe.

From a huge food fight at La Tomatina in Valencia, to bier and bratwurst at Oktoberfest in Munich, and the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona – passport holders can experience some of the greatest cultural events and festivals in seriously beautiful places. You can also enjoy a stay at the Ibiza Hippie Camp to experience the party island, and take to the waves at the San Sebastian Surf Camp.

There are Stoke Travel Passport packages to help you choose the right one for you. For three nights at two festivals, you’ll want to book The Hobo for €360, or go one more and opt for The Nomad with three festivals at €540. If that’s just not enough for you, you can book The Gypsy for five festivals with a sixth festival completely free for €900. But the daddy of them all is the Wham-Bam Summer of Stoke Pass with eight festivals plus two free festivals for €1,440!

Have a ridiculously good summer 2016 in Europe with the Stoke Travel Passport. Book yours now from stoketravel.com

Experience La Tomatina Arguably the craziest festival around, join First Festival Travel at the end of August in the beautiful city of Valencia for the World’s largest food fight – La Tomatina! With hotel accommodation, rooftop pool and bar, transport and entry to the tomato fight in Bunol, plus awesome group party nights, this is a summer festival not to be missed.

What is La Tomatina you ask? Every year since 1945, on the last Wednesday of August approximately 22,000 participants from all over the World gather in Bunol and join the locals in throwing 145,000kg of tomatoes at each other! The fiesta will officially begin at 11am on Wednesday 29th August this year when the first rocket goes off, or when someone manages to claim the ham (yes an actual ham) from a greased pole. The first of the six lorries will make its way down the packed street and through the sardine-like crowd, with locals lobbing the most ridiculous amount of tomatoes at them. Grab those tomatoes and get throwing, squashing, flinging – you have exactly one hour!

First Festival is also proud to offer the exclusive and highly recommended Wine & Water festival taking place in a tiny Spanish town the night before La Tomatina. This is a truly authentic and unique street party and will make your La Tomatina experience that much more memorable. Most of our passengers soak up the opportunity (excuse the pun) to be covered in red wine and water by the locals of Requena – who wouldn’t? With a bull arena, music competition and street parade, it’s an unforgettable night. Well, depending on how much of the free wine you manage to collect in your plastic ‘vessel’…

First Festival offer three and four day packages, and inclusive of a buffet breakfast, hotel

accommodation, experienced Tour Leaders, and great drink specials. They also organise walking and bike tours of Valencia – a city with plenty on offer and an awesome beach!

Experience Asia’s biggest music festival at Sunburn 2016, Goa.

Sunburn Festival is undoubtedly one of Asia’s hottest music festivals. As a pioneering force for the electronic music scene in India, it has well-earned the accolade of Asia’s Best Live Experience Festival since 2009. The festival is held internationally throughout the year before going out with a bang around the Christmas period in none other than party capital - Goa. The festival has something for everyone, with its eclectic combination of music, tasty Indian food, colourful markets and entertainment spread over the course of three days and nights.

The exclusive line-up is always carefully selected to showcase some of the world’s most renowned DJs from a variety of electronic genres including house, electro and trance, alongside the regional sounds of local Indian talent. The festival has

hosted some of the biggest names in the music industry, with legends such as Swedish House Mafia, Armin Van Buuren, Axwell and Afrojack all having taken centre stage at Sunburn at some point in their musical careers. After the action is over for a day, the festivities don’t stop there - with an abundance of after-parties and late-night events organised to keep the party atmosphere going well into the early hours.

The festival is aptly named, given Goa’s balmy climate and the festival’s fantastic sea-side location. Goa certainly has some of India’s finest beaches, with silky white sands and tropical palm trees that elegantly drape over the crystal waters of the Arabian Sea. There are plenty of options at the festival to explore this exotic setting, with magical cruises that leave every day in time to watch the sun set on the Arabian Sea.

LEFTFIELDThe British group credited for taking electronic music onto the live stage, we chat to Leftfield ‘s Neil Barnes to discuss new influences, the growth of electronic music, and his desire to work on a particular movie soundtrack.

16 years after ‘Rhythm and Stealth’, you release ‘Alternative Light Source’; how did you know it was the right time to bring out a third album? We’d been doing some touring in 2010 and we really enjoyed coming back with Leftfield, and I was doing quite a lot of DJing and it just felt like a relevant time. It’s an exciting period for electronic music and I thought it would be great to be a part of that.

What do you make of electronic music today? When we started making electronic music, it was on the periphery of everything. We weren’t the first to make electronic music – bands like Kraftwerk had been doing it generations before us – but it wasn’t as big. Now it’s like the wallpaper of life. It’s the biggest thing in the world and I never thought it would be. That’s a massive difference.

What about your own influences? Have they changed at all?Yeah, because I’m inspired by the sounds I hear around me and the music that’s made by a lot of brilliant people. Influences that were around when I started, like punk, are still there, but they’re not so much of an influence on me. I’m affected by the music that I listen to which is often underground electronica and that’s definitely stimulated the record. It’s a reflection of Leftfield in 2015.

Is Leftfield a solo project?I work with a guy called Adam Wren, who wrote and engineered a lot of the tracks with me, so even though I’m known as Leftfield, it’s still a collaborative project.

We can’t forget the power of ‘Phat Planet’ on those Guinness adverts. If you were to have Leftfield on any brand, or were you to have created the soundtrack to a film, is there a specific one you would choose?Blade Runner would be wonderful to do a new soundtrack to – but it’s already perfect, that’s the problem! I think they’re remaking it this year.

Have you had any calls?[Laughs] No, not yet. It’s a frightening thing, I think, to remake it. But, no calls yet. Who knows, maybe

INTERVIEWS

Heading to Australia for his upcoming tour, we caught up with Emancipator AKA Douglas Appling to get some insight into his live act, Portland.

Hi Doug! So you will be heading down to Australia with Pretty Lights, and will be joined by Opiuo for a series of dates. How well do you know Pretty Lights and Opiuo? Is this the first time that you will be doing a joined tour like this in another country?Yes, this is the first time touring internationally with a joined tour like this. I’ve done a number of shows with Pretty lights including a mini-tour in 2009 and I’m looking forward to meeting Opiuo.

Is this the first time you’re visiting Australia? What are you most looking forward to? This is my first time visiting Australia. I’m excited to see all three major cities we are playing (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne) as well as Rainbow Serpent festival to see how the festival world here compares to in the states. There are plans to visit Byron Bay on the off days and see some family.

I read that your past musical influences include bands like Radiohead and Pixies, but your music in its current incarnation is extremely ethereal and chilled out. How did you get on to this musical path and which acts have influenced you the most to get to this point?

I have roots in guitar and rock music and I played drums in bands up through college, but the Emancipator sound came from a time when I was most inspired by underground hip-hop, the art of sampling, and experimental electronic beats. I was captivated by artists like DJ Shadow, Nujabes, Bonobo, and Four Tet. Lately I’m really inspired by what some people call future beats which really just covers a wide range of innovative electronic music. Artists like Sango and Romare have caught my ear.

In your show you have a live violin player which really adds to creating an amazing vibe, any plans to expand the live show with more musicians?I’ve always felt that with the show format of a producer and a laptop, any live instrumentation goes a long way. Live violin adds another dimension of melody, harmony, and texture to the productions which is why Ilya has been performing at every show since 2010. We’ve recently expanded into the Emancipator Ensemble by bringing in live drums, bass, keys, and other special guests.

What can Australian audiences Expect of your show? Will you have Ilya the Violin player with you?I’ll be mixing a blend of past, present, and future Emancipator tracks and remixes while Ilya blends in melodies and otherworldly sounds on the violin.

SANTIGOLD

Releasing her third album, ’99 Cents’ on 22nd January, we chat to Santigold about what she has in store for us…

Hi Santi! How are you? Where in the world are you at the moment?I’m good, thank you. I’m in Brooklyn, New York, heading to a video edit session.

What kind of sound did you have in mind for ’99 Cents’?I didn’t really have any sound in mind, actually, I just waved in and started making music. I usually do it that way – I just let the process be and see how things come out.

How does this album differ from your previous two?I think this one is a little bit broader. There are some influences that maybe weren’t on the other records. I got some African music influences on this one and there’s a lot of sub base mixed with goth influences and R&B! I consider my music genre-less; I think that’s one of the defining characters of my music. All my albums have a collage style and this characteristic is always consistent on Santigold records.

What specific themes do the songs on ’99 Cents’ cover? It talks a lot about consumption and narcissism and the fact that everything is a product. The constant marketing of ourselves as a product. It

also talks about the challenges as an artist in this creative climate and the personal struggle that I’ve had in there. It talks about a lot of things. It really is just a picture of pop culture.

Are there any lyrical highlights? The lyrics of ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Myself’ are definitely about narcissism. My goal of the album was to really tackle these issues but from a very playful approach so the songs are humorous and fun but at the same time they are topical. ‘Walking In Circles’ is definitely one as well.

What’s the vision behind the album’s cover art?As I was listening to the songs, I wondered “What is the theme of this album?” I thought it was really important to make this a fun album. I wanted to take all the concepts and play with them and really highlight the uncertainty of it all, but in a really fun and playful way. I had this idea for the record cover which was basically me climbing into a bag full of these items that represent all the different areas in my life. I really thought me climbing into the bag, shrink-wrapping myself with the items and strapping a 99 cents tag on it, would be the perfect way to sum it all up [Laughs].

What are your immediate music career goals?Get a broader audience than I’ve ever had before and reach more people who can connect with my music.
