Develop a global education program to add significant
values and real-world, global multicultural experience
to engineering education
Program Overview
Tentatively, 10 July – 18 August, 2014
Research experience at national key Labs of ZJUT
4-credit EGR 5995 course “Cross-Cultural Engineering Problem Solving” • Satisfies as technical elective and foreign culture experience towards graduation • Targeted levels are junior and senior students, and first-year graduates • Work in teams with Chinese students to solve problems of global interest/impact (sustainability, environments, etc.)
Course Syllabus
Objective: promote creativity and development of techniques to solve real-world engineering problems utilizing fundamental engineering principles in a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary setting
Project-based: cross-cultural teams tackle open-ended real-world engineering problems
Lectures on fundamental engineering principles
Guest lectures on intellectual properties and other professional topics
Presentations to faculty and engineers/executives
Extra-Curriculum Activities
Cultural classes for U.S. faculty and students
Participating students will live on campus and will be paired with Chinese student guides
Trips to engineering tech centers (Geely, Wanxiang, …)
Opportunities for cultural trips (Shanghai, Beijing, Zhangjiajie National Park, …)
Experience delicious (and fascinating) foods
Costs & Administration
Free room and board provided by ZJUT
Standard tuition and fees for 4-credit EGR 5995 course (note: potential savings from foreign culture waiver)
Dean’s Office provides scholarship for each student
Additional stipends provided by ZJUT and other sources
Apply through the Study Abroad Office; this Office handles most of the administrative paperwork
Academic paperwork goes through regular channels
