History of the ASME Stamp

• June 24, 1915– Case No. 10: Erie City Iron Works asked

where the stamp specified in para. 332 might be obtained

– Stamps could be obtained from ASME at a Price of $3.00

• March 2, 1922– New certificates and a consecutive number

were issued to each company holding a stamp for the purpose of registration

– Form of stamp changed from a clover leaf with an “S” for all vessels to a clover leaf with S, L, H, M, or U in Center

What and Why?

• ASME had 28 conformity assessment marks– 25 BPV “Code Symbol Stamps”– Certified companies in 74 countries

• Registered as trademarks in the U.S. and many other countries– Registration is a lengthy process requiring

“demonstration of use” in each country– Registrations must be renewed, showing continued

use, generally on a ten-year cycle• Full protection requires registration in 100+

countries where stamped products are used• Failure to protect the marks could result in

loss of trademark status

Materials•Article 11, para 5: “The notified body which issued the European approval for pressure equipment materials shall withdraw that approval if it finds that it should not have been issued for (sic) if the type of materials is covered by a harmonized standard.”•No EAM’s have been issued•ASME materials are used only through PMA’s, which are performed between the Manufacturer and the notified body.

Some Steps taken to Align•Code Case for Guaranteed Material Properties

– Guideline 7/24 relates to the material manufacturer guaranteeing the design values contained in the material specification.

– Code Case 2556-2 links the design values in Section II Part D to the material specification guaranteed by the material manufacturer

Some Steps taken to Align•European materials EN 10028-2, 10028-3 and 10028-7 have been approved and published as SA/EN specifications in Section II, Part A in the 2010 Edition.•EN 10025-2, EN 10028-4, EN 10088-2 and EN 10217-1 have recently been approved and are awaiting publication•More will come as Manufacturers request more grades and product forms

CLOSING REMARKS

ASME BPV Committees meet four times a year to take action on revisions introducing new

technologies, Code Cases providing alternative rules, and official interpretations of Code rules.

Requests for these actions come directly from users of the ASME Code – a circle of

information exchange that benefits the global pressure equipment industry.
