The Glenridge ReceivesHigh Ranking
learned quickly that living at The
Glenridge means not having to worry
about things that used to take up a lot of
their time. When you need something,
you just make a call, and the staff is
delighted to help, adds Lorna. When a
light bulb burns out on a 12-foot ceiling,
someone comes and changes it. Its that
simple. Our lifestyle is no different than itused to be. We still go kayaking and
biking when we want to. We go to the
theater. We do what we want to do.
Nothing has changed, except we now
have continuing care, which is so
important. The Glenridge has turned
out to be everything we wanted and
more than we expected. We absolutely
love it here.
The Right Decision, for Sure
Joyce and Jack Stedman lived right
around the corner from The Glenridge for
14 years. Although they knew about the
community, they werent sure they were
ready yet. But when Joyce suffered a
serious leg injury, the couple decided it
was time to consider long-term care
and they looked at a number of options.
Initially, I was the one who lagged
behind, she admits. But, now I am a
huge advocate. It was the right decision,
for sure.

For all life can be! Encore! For the Second Consecutive Year, The Glenridge Is NamedBest Retirement Community by Sarasota Magazine
Weve done it again! Readers ofSarasota Magazine have selectedThe Glenridge on Palmer Ranch as theBest Retirement Community
for 2011. We are honored to have been
chosen again this year, says CEO
Charles Tirrell. It reflects our ongoing
commitment to excellence.
Of course, The Glenridge is no
stranger to superlatives. From our
landscaping to our skilled nursing
facility, weve won a number of awards
. . . which is no surprise to our members,
who are eager to share their pride in our
spectacular Life Fulfilling Community.
Everything We Wanted andMore Than We Expected
After experiencing firsthand the
challenges of long-term care with his
own parents, Fred Hard and his wife
Lorna knew that they eventually wanted
to move to a life care community. About
six years ago, the Vermont residents
made their first visit to Sarasota and
fell in love with the area. At the time,
The Glenridge was under construction.
We looked at other communities, but
we had our eye on The Glenridge all
along, says Lorna. We bought a homehere and put our names on the wait list.
At the end of last year, the Hards
decided it was time and in the course
of one weekend, they embarked on a
crash course to educate
themselves about the
different contract
options. Two weeks
later, they signed their
contract. It happened
amazingly fast, says
Fred. The Glenridge
team worked long hours
to repaint, recarpet and
refurbish the whole
interior. We were blown
away by how attentive
they were and how
thoroughly the job was
done. Everyone made us
feel very special.
Although theyre new

Fred and Lorna Hard say living atThe Glendridge gives them completefreedom to do the things they want to do.
Why? The Stedmans cite numerous
advantages: maintenance-free living
(no more worries about taking care of
the house and the pool); The Glenridges
passion for culture and the Performing
Arts Center; lifelong learning programs
and excellent long-term care.
The Glenridge is like a candy store,
Joyce says. You look around, like it all, have lots of options and can choose
different ones each time. Theres no
pressure, just fun its a different kind of
busy. We have been on five world
cruises, and for us, The Glenridge is like
living on a luxurious cruise
ship thats tied up at the
dock. We have superb
accommodations,
excellent food and
entertainment, and
we have been
befriended by
charming andinteresting people.
We also have a
crew thats
second to none.
What more can
we say?

Research indicates that the road tooptimum health, wellness andlongevity has multiple components:
physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and social. With that inmind, The Glenridge on Palmer
Ranch takes a positive and lifefulfilling approach to aging by
providing an environment thatnurtures the body, stimulates themind and feeds the soul.
Focus on Fitness
According to the National Center for Health
Statistics, only about 32% of Americas seniors
exercise on a daily basis. Yet, physical activity
has been shown to help prevent everything from
heart attacks, strokes and cancer to bone loss
and dementia. The National Institute on
Aging concurs, calling exercise the fountain
of youth.
Robert and Jeanne Morris believe it and
their passion for fitness is one of the reasons
they were attracted to The Glenridge. Thecouple who came to Sarasota from Evansville,
Indiana exercise
six days a week.
An enthusiastic
bicyclist, Jeanne
participates in a
number of Fitness Center classes: yoga, muscles
in motion and power hour sometimes twice a
day. (Thats in addition to elliptical training,
free weights, abdominal exercises and
occasional water aerobics.) Bob works out in
the equipment room, lifting weights and using
the treadmill. There are a lot of things to love about The
Glenridge, says Jeanne. And the focus on
wellness is at the top of the list. Weve been here
a little over a year, and it has exceeded our
expectations. Everything we could ever want is
available to us. Its totally carefree living! We
just wish we had moved in sooner.
A Touch of Heaven
Josephine De Feo describes The Glenridge as
a touch of heaven. And she may be in a better
position than most to
make that statement.
The former business
owner spent 60 years in
the church goods
industry, designing and
manufacturing
ecclesiastical and
liturgical garments forthe clergy. One of the
highlights of her career was making the
vestments for Archbishop Spellman when he
was appointed Cardinal and completing an
order for 3,500 vestments,
which were shipped from her
factory in Cliffside, New
Jersey to Poland. In fact,
Josephine was so good at
what she did that Hollywood
filmmakers often came
calling, asking her to create
costumes for movie starsplaying religious roles
Jack Lemmon, Walter Pigeon,
Frank Sinatra and Richard
Chamberlain, among them.
Her work was so highly
regarded that the National
Church Goods Association
inducted her into their
Hall of Fame.
At The Glenridge, Josephine enjoys Academy
classes, the Performing Arts Center and the
friendly neighbors. She also serves on the dining
committee, which provides input on everything
from margarine vs. butter to dress codes for
dinner. We have both formal and casual dining
options here, she says. Its upscale without
being stuffy and the food
is superb!
Before moving in,
Josephine listened to friends
who had shopped
around visiting
communities up and down
the east coast. They
did all the legwork and
recommended The
Glenridge, she says. I trusted them, I tried
it out and love it, she says. I love all the
smiling faces and happy people. As far as Im
concerned, there is no other place to be! Its the
best thing I ever did for Josephine De Feo and
I would do it all over again only sooner.
Josephine De Feo enjoys thefull menu of activities offeredby The Glenridge.

Alive. Vibrant. Fun.
With eclectic backgrounds and a wide range of
interests, David and Nada Farr feel right at home
at The Glenridge. A graduate of the University of
Rochester with a degree in math education, David
earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University. The
former professor of educational research at the
University of Buffalo (SUNY) and two-time
Fulbright Scholar developed a computer-based
speech assistance device that enables people with
cerebral palsy to communicate. He also created a
general abilities testing program for Icelandic
school children. An alumna of Temple University
where she played on the basketball and hockey
teams, Nada was named to the colleges Sports
Hall of Fame. She moved to Sarasota in 1976,
where she worked as a guidance counselor in
high schools and junior colleges. The couple,
both widowed, met while living in Pelican Bay
and have been married for 12 years.
An enthusiastic sailor, David is also a
music lover who plays the vibraphone and
leads weekly jazz combo sessions. Nada, a
Glenridge Ambassador, enjoys the theater and
plays golf, tennis and bridge with her husband.
Were very, very happy
here, say the couple.
Everyone is so alive, so
vibrant, so much fun.
Its a very friendly and
social atmosphere. Were
having a great time
and our kids dont have to
worry about us anymore!
A Welcoming Environment
With a degree in Theater and Speech from
the University of Illinois and a career as Post
Entertainment Director with Army Special
Services, Lee Chaverin couldnt have found a
better place to call home than The Glenridge.
The former model and modeling instructor
turned her runway experience into a business
opportunity. She taught her own beautification
seminars for women, called Feminars, all over
the country. Her most important job, however,
was being a mother to her three children.
Lee and her late husband, Carl, moved to
Sarasota in 1990, where she became involved
with the Sarasota Opera Association. While on
its Board of Directors, she founded and chaired
its Speakers Bureau. Living nearby, she watchedThe Glenridge grow and flourish, and when her
husband passed away, she decided to move in.
Ive already gotten very involved, Lee says.
There are so many things that fit my
background. I enjoy the lecture programs and
theater performances. Plus, Ive joined the
Glenridge Players, attend classes at the
Glenridge Academy and take classes at the
Fitness Center four days a week. This is a
lovely, friendly, open, interesting, welcoming
environment. And, the people are extraordinary!
Major Peace of Mind
Snowbirds from New Jersey, Bob and
Glenna Ackerman had been spending winters in
Long Boat Key for the past five years. Health
issues prompted them to look for a community
that offered continuing care and after
checking out several communities, they decided
that The Glenridge best met their needs.
The whole package came together so
quickly, we couldnt believe it, says
Bob. Initially, we were
thinking wed wait a couple
more years, but the
residence we wanted became
available, and we jumped on
the opportunity. We came in the week after
Thanksgiving, spent four days picking out our
unit, choosing carpeting, colors, etc., got
through the holidays, put our house on themarket, sold it and moved in on February 1st
all in two months! The staff here was amazing
they were changing tile, door knobs, doors and
shelves while we were packing. It was snowing
in New Jersey when we left a great time to
move to the Sunshine State!
Still settling in, the couple is already enjoying
the theater and the Fitness Center, working out
three days a week, on average.
It was hard to leave our children, they say.
But, they are so supportive, and this was
something we felt we needed to do. All of us
have major peace of mind now.
Robert and Glenna Ackerman look forward tolifelong learning opportunities at The Glenridge.
ccording to research, people who are lonely and isolated are three to five times more likely to
develop a serious illness. In other words, staying connected and being social are actually good
for your health. If thats the case, then Glenridge members have a jump on longevity . . . and it just
might start at the Thistle Stop.
Members Bob and Jeanne Morris say the Thistle Stop is a great place to meet people, while
Josephine De Feo notes, The companionship and chitter-chatter during cocktail hour is wonderful.
A hands-down crowd favorite, the bar and lounge attracts early birds around 4:30 or 5 p.m. before
they go to dinner, with a second seating at about 5:30 or 6. Bartender Slade Crawford estimates that
about 60 to 100 members are served each night, and he expects that number to rise since
after-dinner drinks are now being offered. Speaking of which . . . the favorite Glenridge cocktail:
an apple martini. And for aprs dinner: the Hummer, a drink mixed with ice cream and dark rum.
Were ready to try anything, Crawford says with a smile.
