Contemporary CreativitySally Gambling has always been fascinated

by contemporary art and has been a collectorfor years. “I can’t think of a better place tohouse my collection than here at The Glenridgewhere culture and creativity are celebrated,”says the former New Yorker.

Sally’s impeccably decorated apartment incorporates vibrant colors with all types ofmixed artwork, antiques and furniture.

“It doesn’t have a very Florida feel, but whatyou see is me. I brought a lot of my New Yorkstyle to The Glenridge, and it certainly feels likehome,” says Sally.

Prior to moving to The Glenridge, she and her late husband lived in Boca Grande. When he passed away, Sally said: “Although that area was beautiful, Sarasota was calling my name. I just love the cosmopolitan feel, the opera, ballet and theater. I needed to open my life up after being a widow, and I’ve done that here.”

“For me, The Glenridge has been the bestthing ever,” she adds. “I wanted to be aroundinteresting people, and I was impressed by allthe cultural opportunities. I’ve been here 6 yearsnow, and life just continues to get better.”

Sarasota ChicSome people are just born with panache.

Jean Hadden is one of them. A former hotel and travel executive who moved to The Glenridge six and a half years ago,

she is one of the community’s most enthusiastic ambassadors. “I absolutely love it here,” she says. “With all the amenities, it’s like livingin a hotel – there’s a concierge who gets us tickets to the theater and makes reservations for dining. We have complete maintenance services. At night, the bar is just filled with people socializing before dinner. It’s a pretty fantastic

place. The Glenridge offers a wonderful, secure lifestyle in a lively, friendly, approachable environment. Here, you have the freedom to be creative. You can run with your ideas.”

And run with them she did.“I wanted a New York apartment with a

European flair,” she said. “My interior designer, Chuck Hattendorf, made it happen – with stylish window treatments, bold colors, whimsical fabric and lots of mirrors to give the illusion of more space.”

Jean also totally redesigned her kitchen byenclosing it and adding a countertop stove withdrawers and an oven wall unit. “My apartment

has been great for entertaining,” she says. “I’ve had buffet dinners here for 24 people.”

Along with her fourth-floor neighbors,Jean has also opened her home for Glenridgemarketing events, in the hopes that visitors will see for themselves what a wonderful placeThe Glenridge really is. “We wanted people toexperience first-hand the exceptional lifestyle we have here,” she says. “We want them toknow that our members are fascinating people – philanthropists, community leaders, arts andtheater enthusiasts, golfers, tennis players, doctors . . . and that we have a great service staff. Our housekeeping, maintenance, securityand medical personnel are the unseen heroes behind our happiness.”

“Above all,” she adds, “we wanted others to see how we have made our space personal –that it’s our own. We brought with us what welove, created a new home and a future in thiscommunity. And we did it the way we wanted,in our own way.”

Beautiful and LiveableWhen Samuel and Elaine Lieberman moved

to The Glenridge, they combined two housesinto one very sizeable apartment. “Frankly, it’s almost as big as our home, so we were ableto bring a lot of things with us – including ourfurniture and artwork,” says Samuel. “Then we upgraded the residence to meet our needs.Everything is top-of-the-line.”

The Liebermans added bamboo floors andcrown molding throughout, as well as granitecountertops, built-in cabinetry and wall units.“It’s not only beautiful, it’s very livable,” thecouple says.

Like many of their Glenridge neighbors, the Liebermans have an impressive furniture and art collection that includes a Nakashimadining table, designed by the famous Japanese-American woodworker/furniture maker whowas one of the leading innovators of 20th century furniture design – as well as sculpturesand paintings by a number of renowned contemporary artists.

As art and culture aficionados, the Liebermans take full advantage of The Glenridge Performing Arts Center, right on campus. Samuel also attends foreign affairs classes and works out in the fitness center three times a week. “Living here is very convenient,” he says. “We’re comfortable, absolutely secure and very happy here. We know we’re in good hands.”

Second Time Is the CharmMarian Campbell liked The Glenridge so

much, she moved here twice. Several years ago, when her husband Buford (widely known as“Boots”) was in the Carroll Center recuperatingfrom a stroke, she lived in a Club Home. When he recovered, the couple – both avidgolfers – decided that they missed living on the links and bought a house in University Park.

With “Boots” now disabled, Marian rejoined The Glenridge six months ago.

Marian’s vibrant, colorful apartment is ideally suited to showcase her collection ofmodern art and glassware. She also customizedboth her kitchen and closets for organizationalpurposes, by including built-in cabinets anddrawers.

“The beauty of The Glenridge is that themoving process is so easy. The movers tookphotographs of my previous home and recreatedmy new one here just the way it was. I didn’teven have to touch a thing, and it was done perfectly!” says Marian. “And when it comes toupgrades, it’s very evident that you can do asmuch or as little as you’d like.”

“I’m glad I’m back,” she adds. “I enjoy themaintenance-free living, the attentiveness of thestaff and the security this community provides. It’s a great way of life.”

Sally Gambling’s stylish residence complements her love of contemporary art.

Kappie Spencer has always been a womanwho knows exactly what she wants. A

political activist and women’s rights advocate, she worked tirelessly for many causes includingthe federal Equal Rights Amendment. She is included in the book Feminists Who ChangedAmerica (1965-1972). Kappie was also on theNational Board of Directors for the AmericanAssociation of University Women and NationalWomen’s Political Caucus. She is clearly a“take-charge” person. So, she planned early for her later years.

When it came to customizing her apartment,Kappie didn’t settle for anything less than thebest. She had a vision for her new home, whichshe implemented down to the smallest detail –from ceiling lights to flooring to plumbing fixtures. The result: an eclectic showpiece thatreflects a full and fascinating life.

To make her home bright and welcoming,Kappie installed three skylights to bring in natural light. “In my family room, I built a large

cupola-style skylight that I saw in a magazine,”she says. “I didn’t dream I’d be able to incorporatethat, but The Glenridge made it happen. It’s themost unique feature in my apartment.”

Acting as everything from interior designer to general contractor, Kappie added speciallighting throughout (including perimeter lightsaround the living room ceiling and star lightsover the dining room table); installed a dreamkitchen with Corian countertops and sinks; and built a custom shower with two opposing 18-spout fixtures and an overhead gooseneckshowerhead. Her home office features a specially designed computer desk and a built-inMurphy bed for guests.

Bringing her love of the outdoors inside,Kappie had several walls faux-painted to looklike exteriors. Three sliding glass windows leadto a garden area with a working wall fountainand a mixture of fresh greenery and sunflowers. The patio furniture came from one of her previous homes in Iowa.

Other furniture and accent pieces could beworthy of stardom on “Antiques Roadshow”: a rare, walnut Noguchi table from the early‘40s; vases her mother-in-law bought in 1935for $5 apiece, now valued at $5,000-$6,000each; alabaster sculptures and an embroideredwall hanging from China. Much of the décorcame from other nations – souvenirs of Kappie’stravels abroad.

“I’ve tried to get something unusual fromeach country I visited,” she says. “In someways, my apartment is like a travel museum. But, it also includes pieces from my parents, my childhood, and my two previous homes. (For example, the little windows in the livingroom showcase my cobalt blue glass collectionfrom Iowa.) My curtains are from there, too. Incorporating those touches added another degree of comfort. It really made my residenceat The Glenridge ‘home’.”

Kappie Spencer, pictured in her foyer, added stunningarchitectural details to her Glenridge residence.
