Gliwice Scientific Meetings

Twenty Years

1997-2016

Page 2: Gliwice Scientific Meetings

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This year we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Gliwice Scientific Meetings. The prehistory of this series of annual conferences includes irregular scientific meetings organized in the 60s, 70s and 80s by Prof. Mieczysław Chorąży and his team from the Department of Tumor Biology at the Institute of Oncology in Gliwice. In 1997, Prof. Joanna Rzeszowska-Wolny and her team from the newly established Department of Experimental and Clinical Radiobiology at the Institute of Oncology decided to continue this tradition of scientific meetings. From the beginning, the organizational and financial backbone for these events was provided by the Association for the Support of Cancer Research, an entity founded by researchers from the Institute of Oncology and colleagues from the Silesian University of Technology. Today the Gliwice Scientific Meetings are organized jointly by the Institute of Oncology and the Silesian University of Technology the two major scientific centers located in Gliwice. More recently, the Polish Group of the EACR also contributes to the scientific program of the conference.

The Gliwice Scientific Meetings are focused on different aspects of cancer research, molecular and cellular biology, and medicine, biotechnology and bioinformatics. During the last twenty years more than 350 lecturers from all parts of the world have contributed to the scientific excellence of our conference. The conference has hosted about 1500 participants who presented about 1000 posters. We believe that during these years the Gliwice Scientific Meeting established a solid scientific reputation, and became a recognizable event not only for Polish researchers.

On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary we would like to express our warm gratitude to all participants, co-organizers and sponsors of the conference. But the story will be continued, and hence we also invite you to future Gliwice Scientific Meetings.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Joanna Rzeszowska-Wolny Prof. Piotr Widłak
