Term 1

31st August 2016 – Whole Staff Meeting & Primary Languages planning. We welcome Ms

Sharlene Coyle to the teaching staff and visiting resource teacher Ms. Emma Morgan.

1st September – School opened for all pupils - we welcome 11 new pupils and their families

to the school

Junior Infants & Senior Infants 2016

School received notice from the Department of Education of a Whole School Inspection

beginning on the 19th September.

6th September – A new interactive whiteboard was installed in the 1st, 2nd & 3rd classroom

7th September – Pupils, parents, teachers, members of the Parents Association & members

of the Board of Management attended the presentation of a new set of football jerseys

sponsored by Glenamaddy Credit Union in Glenamaddy Credit Union.

8th September – all pupils and staff completed a fire drill

12th September

• F.A.I soccer coaching for all classes began with James Muldoon and Mary Kelly

• Parent questionnaires for the W.S.E. (Whole School Evaluation) were distributed to

all families

14th September – New drywipe whiteboards were fitted in the infant classroom and the

resource room

19th September – Ms. Christina Casserly school inspector began W.S.E

21st September - Cumann na mBunscol girls mini-sevens area final competition took place in

Clonberne. Girls made history by becoming the first girls school team to win the area final

and qualified for the county finals in Loughgeorge on the 12th of October. Thank you to

coaches James Shevlin, Stephen Neary and Ms. Ciara Roughneen for helping to guide their

success. This was also the first occasion on which the recently sponsored jerseys by

Glenamaddy Credit Union wear worn. The team were greeted by bonfires and great

parental & community support on their return to the school.

The school inspector concluded W.S.E. and will return for a post-evaluation meeting on the

29th September, meeting with staff, chairperson of the Parents Association and the

chairperson of the Board of Management.

21st September – Cumann na mBunscol boys Mini-sevens area blitz took place in Dunmore.

The boys team put in a very good performance winning 2 out of their 3 matches helped by

their coaches – James Shevlin and Ms. Ciara Roughneen.

28th September Tin whistle lessons for all pupils from senior infants to 6th class with Ms.

Orla Wynn began

3rd October – National Space Week began – pupils learned about our place in the solar

system, learned solar system songs, made rockets, completed a solar system scavenger hunt

and made a homemade rocket using bread-soda and vinegar launching it with great success

outside!

4th October – Fr. Deogratias celebrated mass in the school hall to mark the start of the new

school year.

6th October

• Tara McGrath from Goal held 2 workshops – one in the middle room and one in the

senior classroom. Pupils worked on a variety of different activities which included

matching symbols for vital supplies and needs to clues on a giant map of Africa,

deciding which actions would be most effective for Goal to promote the work of the

organisation.

• Hip hop dance classes with Dance World West for all classes began for 4 weeks

10th October – Hatch for school 2-week programme began. Deirdre from Inagh Free Range

farm in Co. Clare arrived at the school with an incubator containing seven eggs, brooder box

with heat plate and all the essential including bedding & feed etc.

11th October – pupils had a full rehearsal for the N.U.I.G Reel Life Science competition under

the Science of Farming topic.

12 October – Cumann na mBunscol county finals took place in Loughgeorge. Pupils from 2nd,

3rd, 4th & 5th classes and a large group of parents travelled to support the team. The girls

team won all 3 matches in their group and went through to the play off between the 3

group winners. Girls won the county final making history becoming the first school team

ever to win a Cumann na mBunscol county title. Mr. Gerry Hussey presented the Sharon

Creaven cup to team captain Aoibhe Brennan.

Mr. Cyril Mannion gave a brief history behind the cup and congratulated the team, parents,

school and coaches on the great success. Many bonfires greeted the team as they made

their victorious return to the school where another large group of parents, grandparents

and supporters turned out to congratulate them on the county title. We are very grateful to

coaches Stephen Neary, James Shevlin & Ciara Roughneen for all their work with the team.

13th October

• Two chicks have hatched over-night and a 3rd chick is hatching as pupils are coming

into school which was a very exciting experience for pupils to watch. Pupils in the

senior classroom prepare the brooder box, ensuring the heat plate is on so that the

fluffy chicks can be moved into it.

• Pupils in 1st, 2nd & 3rd class recorded Mr. Field’s Day at School for the N.U.I.G Reel

Life Science entry.

• Pupils in 4th, 5th & 6th classes used Powtoons to create animated presentations on the

planets. Glinsk N.S. was one of 104 schools (including primary & post-primary) to

submit entries to the Reel Life Science 2016 competition

• Mr. Peadar Brick called to the school to present prize winners with their prizes for the

Glenamaddy Ploughing Art Competition

14th October – Goal jersey day

17th October – Maths Week Ireland began with the senior classroom making 6th place overall

on the national leader board for Target boards. Other classes used suitable maths websites

and played a variety of maths games.

18th October – All classes and staff completed a fire-drill

21st October – Inagh Free Range Farm collected the hatched chicks

24th October Galway County library visited the school

25th October – Pupils in Junior & Senior Infants travelled to Roscommon Arts Centre for

Monster Music Improv performance

• Pupils from 1st – 6th classes attended West Side Story in Glenamaddy Town Hall

26th October – Pupils from 3rd -6th class travelled to Renmore Park in Galway for the

Cumannn na mBunscol cross-country championships and put in great performances in

difficult conditions.

27th October – All pupils carved pumpkins for Halloween

28th October - All pupils & staff dressed up to celebrate Halloween and take part in

traditional and fun Halloween games. School Closed for Halloween mid-term break

7th November – The school re-opens after the mid-term break

10th November

• H.S.E. Health screening took place for Junior Infant pupils

• Credit Union art competition presentation evening took place in Glenamaddy

12th November – Five computer hard drives were donated to the school by Valeo Vision

Systems in Tuam. These hard drives were used to replace hard drives that were no longer

working and also one each for the learning support and resource classrooms.

14th November

• Science Week Ireland begins with all pupils working on science throughout the week.

• International Anti-Bullying week also takes place with the theme Power for Good and

is also supported by the H.S.E. Health & Wellbeing Division.

• The Irish Wheelchair National Angels campaign takes place

17th November – School has been shortlisted for the Galway Cathaoirleach’s Community

Awards in the schools category for contribution to heritage taking place on the 30th

November in the Shearwater Hotel Ballinasloe.

18th November

• H.S.E. dentist visit school for 6th class pupils

• All staff and pupils from 1st – 6th classes visited Ballinakill graveyard to pray for All

Holy Souls and planted spring bulbs in the nature area on return to the school.

21st & 22nd November

• Parent – Teacher meetings took place for all classes

• County Photos visited the school to take school photos

• Team Hope collected the Christmas shoeboxes donated by families

23rd November – Learn to Type classes for all pupils in 4th, 5th & 6th class began in the

computer room for the winter months. The Parents Association organised the classes and

Teresa Brennan is the class tutor.

28th November – Ms. Aisling Fitzmaurice began 2 weeks work experience as part of her

Transition Year programme

30th November

• Beth O’Mahony was the overall winner in Category A of the Diocesan Year of Mercy

Jubilee Art Competition receiving a special certificate & prize from Bishop Kevin

• Glinsk N.S. was shortlisted in the schools’ category of the Cathaoirleach’s Community

Awards 2016. The awards ceremony was held at the Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe

5th December – Computer Science Education Week began with pupils working on coding

through the Hour of Code tutorials online

8th December – School closed for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception

15th December – Sunshine Videos recorded rehearsals of all Christmas plays to be staged on

Christmas Concert 2016

19th December – Danielle Alison hosted a storytelling workshop in the school hall for infants

and 1st class which had a Christmas theme. Pupils were fully engaged in active participation

throughout the workshop which included singing.

20th December – Pupils in the senior classroom held a min-J.E.P. project in the school hall

which was a Christmas Fair. There were 5 groups which worked on their own project,

making, marketing, and selling their products. Visitors to the Christmas Fair were treated to

complimentary tea/ coffee and seasonal treats in the coffee shop.

21st December – Ms. Róisín Quinn visited the school to meet with all pupils & staff in the

school in advance of her substitute teaching position commencing in January.

22nd December – We wish Ms. Ciara Roughneen well on her maternity leave and welcome

Ms. Róisín Quinn to the school beginning on the 9th January 2017. School closed for the

Christmas holidays

9th January – School re-opens for all pupils & Ms Róisín Quinn began her maternity leave

appointment teaching position in the senior classroom

11th January – Tin whistle lessons with Orla Mc Atavie begin for Term 2

12th January - Gymnastics for all classes with Freeda Waldron began for 4 weeks

13th January – Knitting began for all pupils from 1st – 6th class for 6 weeks with much help

from grandparents and members of the community which we are very grateful for. Pupils

knitted a variety of crafts including hairbands, scarves, owls, blankets, teddies etc.

26th January – Niall McCormack from Colmac robotics spend the full day guiding pupils from

3rd – 6th class through the sumo robotics challenge. This fun, practical, hands-on workshop

was based on STEM teaching & learning which integrated the following subjects throughout

the day – science, technology, engineering and maths. Pupils learned about binary numbers

in order to be able to programme the sensor on their finished design which was then

connected to a laptop and programmed on a looped circuit. All groups used the testing

circle to test their designs before many exciting sumo challenges took place.

The school received funding from the Department of Education under the Digital Schools

Strategy 2015 – 2020 programme.

27th January – The Glenamaddy Credit Union Quiz took place in Glenamaddy Community

Centre with 4 teams U11 and 4 teams U13 taking part with all teams scoring very highly on

the leader board. Congratulation to the U13 team of Sarah-Jane Trayers, Tegan Neary, Sarah

O’Neill & Éanna Nolan runners up in the U13 quiz.

29th January – Catholic Schools week began with the theme “Caring for our Common Home”

31st January – All pupils made traditional St. Brigid’s crosses and also some Donegal crosses

with much help from Mr. Shevlin.

1st February – Grandparents prayer service took place. All the St. Brigid’s crosses made the

previous day were placed before the altar and blessed during the prayer service.

The Galway Education Centre Write-A-Book exchange day took place and all the books from

Glinsk N.S. were exchanged with three other schools for 2 weeks.

7th February – Safer Internet Day took place with all pupils learning about staying safer

online using www.webwise and www.commonsensemedia.org All pupils also got the Safer

Internet day 2017 wrist bands and took part in the #up2us photo competition organised by

Webwise

8th February – Teresa Melia the Diocesan Religious Advisor visited the school

13th February – School received a GOAL Humanitarian Award/ certificate in recognition of

our work which included GOAL jersey day and also the GOAL workshop held earlier in the

year

15th February – All Write-A-Books were exchanged with all pupils receiving their books back,

with many highly commended and merit winners. Merit book winners will attend the

Galway Education Centre Write-A-Book awards evening on the 2nd of April to collect their

book and medal.

20th February - An enrolment evening for September 2017 took pace

23rd & 24th February the school was closed for the mid-term break

1st March – Ash Wednesday – pupils and staff attended mass in St. Michael’s church

2nd March – World Book Day took place with all pupil invited to dress up as one of their

favourite book characters for the day. Pupils also received World Book Day tokens.

3rd March – Swimming lessons for pupils from 1st – 6th class began at Roscommon Leisure

Centre

4th March – U13 quiz team travelled to Dublin to take part in the CUDA (Credit Unions

Districts & Associates) quiz. They were the only team from outside of Leinster taking part

finishing with a great score of 80/100

6th March – Engineers Week Ireland began with pupils in all classes taking on engineering

challenges, asking an engineer questions via Skype, re-constructing famous landmarks from

around the world including the Eiffel tower and the pyramids and learning about all the

different types of engineers.

10th March – Two pupils are shortlisted in the National Have you got Maths Eyes

competition for their entries, one entry U11 and one U14. An awards ceremony will be held

in the future.

15th March

• Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards shortlist was announced with Glinsk N.S.

shortlisted in the Best Supporting Female category for Judge Grumps in the Straw and

Order production. The awards ceremony will be hosted in the Bord Gáis Energy

Theatre Dublin on the 17th May.

• All pupils and staff completed a fire drill

16th March - Seachtain na Gaeilge was celebrated with a Lá Gaeilge. All pupils were

encouraged to speak as much Irish throughout the day, and wear green on the day. We held

a “séisiúin mór” in the school hall with pupils playing a variety of instruments including tin

whistles, guitars, banjos, fiddles, button accordion, mandolin, keyboard, & shakers etc.

Afterwards pupils from all classes were divided into mixed class groups for a Kahoot quiz

with questions “as Gaeilge.” These quizzes were also made available on the school website.

Pupils also learned the Walls of Limerick and had an impromptu River Dance session!

20th March – Two pupils received Highly Commended Certificates in the Sight Savers Junior

21st March – Ms. Clíona Sheehan from the N.P.C. (National Parents Council) held an

information evening/ training for the Parents Association.

Local post mistress Margaret Farragher visited the infant classroom as part of the Áistear

programme with the theme of the Post Office

24th March – National Daffodil Day took place with pupils and staff in the school supporting

the charity buying daffodil pins and badges

28th March – Pupils in second class received the sacrament of Penance

3rd April – Galway Education Write-A-Book presentation evening took place in the Raddison

Hotel Galway

4th April – Eason Spelling Bee County Final took place in the Salthill Hotel Galway with Sarah-

Jane Trayers representing the school.

5th April – Confessions for all pupils from 3rd – 6th class for Easter

6th April – All pupils from 1st – 6th class travelled to the Museum of Country Life outside

Castlebar as part of the school working towards the DPSM (Discover Primary Science &

Maths) Award. Pupils were taken on a guided tour of the exhibitions with informative talks

on each exhibition. Pupils from 4th – 6th class also completed a workshop on from Farm to

Food. They looked at many different types of food and tested if they were alkaline or acid,

predicting and recording their results.

7th – 15th April – work on removing the old kitchen units and upgrading the kitchenette

took place. Painting, re-wiring, plumbing for a new heated tap were part of the upgrading

works. The Parents Association undertook this project with the support of the Board of

Management. Thank you to the many people who gave of their skills, expertise and time to

complete this project in a short time frame and Inspired Designs for working with the

Parents Association on designing and making the kitchen.

7th April – Final swimming lesson for pupils from 1st – 6th class.

Term 3

24th April – School re-opens for all pupils & Ms Sinéad Kenny began her maternity leave

appointment teaching position in the junior classroom.

Tech week began with all classes completing a variety of Tech Week activities throughout

the week, including Skype calls to see how different professions use technology in their

work, programming with Run Marco, using the Color Alive app to make pictures come alive

etc.

25th April

• Second class received the sacrament of penance in preparation for First Holy

Communion on Sunday 30th April.

• Staff completed a manual handling course

26th April – Eir Junior Spider 2017 shortlist announced with Glinsk N.S. M.S. Logo

27th April – School is closed as all teachers attend in-service training for the New Primary

Language Curriculum

28th April – All pupils and staff took part in the National An Táisce Spring clean around the

school grounds and immediate environment which is also part of the Green Schools

programme on Litter and Waste

30th April – First Holy Communion was celebrated in St. Michael’s church which was a very

special day for all First Communicants and their families. Refreshments were served in the

school hall afterwards organised by the Parents Association and the Glinsk Ladies Club.

3rd May – The boys Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic Championship took place at Glinsk G.A.A.

4th May - Hurling coaching offered by Ballygar Hurling Club as part of an initiative with the

county board to promote hurling began for all classes

5th May – The girls Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic Championship took place at Glinsk G.A.A.

pitch with the Glinsk team winning the group outright and progressing to the county final on

the 30th May at Loughgeorge. Thank you to Stephen Neary, Eamonn Hegarty & Jason

Fannon for all their help and involvement with the running of the Cumann na mBunscol

championship for the boys and girls teams at Glinsk G.A.A. pitch on both days.

A digital log of evidence of all the work completed by all pupils across STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects for the Discovery Primary Science & Maths was

submitted.

8th May – Pupils from 2nd – 6th class attended the Eir Junior Spider Awards at Croke Park with

M.C. Mr. Aidan Power hosting the event. All pupils enjoyed the variety of exhibits including

Gowran Reptile Zoo, Virtual googles, face painting and particularly the photo booth! Pupils

from 3rd class were very proud to have their Logo programming work shortlisted among a

very high standard of entries.

9th May – The P.T.A.A. awards evening took place at the Abbey Hotel – congratulations to

Sarah- Jane Trayers and Alanna Scppaticci, respective winners in the art & essay

competitions.

11th May - Pupils presented Evelyn Curley with the proceeds raised on Daffodil Day for the

Irish Cancer Society

• Pupils from 6th class attend a retreat at Kilbegnet church in preparation for receiving

the Sacrament of Confirmation

• School received notification from Discover Primary Science & Maths Foundation that

Glinsk N.S. has been awarded the STEM plaque of Excellence which will be delivered

in June

16th May

• F.A.I. soccer competitions for boys’ and girls’ teams took place at Lecarrow with both

teams qualifying for the finals to be held in June. The girls competed in the 5-a-side

competition and the boys competed in the 7-a-side competition

• The Galway County School Library visited the school with all pupils from junior infants

to 2nd class exchanging books

17th May – Pupils from 6th class received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Bride’s church

in Ballintubber from Bishop Kevin Doran. Congratulations to Ava, Aoibhe, Ciara, Éimear,

Tegan, Sarah-Jane & Gabrielle on receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Pupils from 1st – 5th class, parents, supporters and teachers attended the Bord Gáis Energy

Student Theatre Awards in Dublin with Gabrielle Kilcommons short-listed in the Best

Supporting Female Role for her part as Judge Grumps in senior room production Straw n’

Order.

It was a great honour and achievement to be shortlisted for these awards as the experience

was really enjoyed by all who attended the red-carpet event hosted by 2FM D.J. Eoghan

McDermott! The standard of the performances throughout the awards was very high with

many large urban schools producing big musical shows such as Annie, Oliver etc.so as a

small rural school we were really proud to be there and were inspired for next year!

Bord Gáis Energy Student Theatre Awards

24th May – Pupils from 6th class, parents and teachers attended the National Maths Eyes

Awards at the Institute of Technology Tallaght. The group were one of four schools chosen

to meet the Minister for Education Mr. Richard Bruton T.D. at Merrion Square where

Minister Bruton spoke to pupils about their entries. Mr. Michael Fitzmaurice T.D. met the

group at Merrion Sqaure following which they had refreshments at Leinster House.

In the afternoon, the group attended the awards ceremony hosted by the Maths Eyes team.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Kilcommons and Ava Joyce who were winners in the U11 and

U13 category. Both pupils were presented their trophies by Dr. Terry Maguire, Ciarán

O’Sullivan of the Maths Eyes Team and Mr. Thomas Stone, President of the Institute of

Technology Tallaght. Gabrielle was also the overall national winner in the U11 category. The

group returned to a great Glinsk welcome with bonfires lighting and a large crowd turning

out to congratulate the pupils.

25th May – Final tin-whistle lesson for all classes with Orla McAtavie

26th May – Pupils from 3rd – 6th class took part in the Creggs N.S. Mark Fitzmaurice

tournament at Donamon with girls playing in the soccer competition and boys playing in the

Gaelic competition. The boys team put in a great effort against strong opposition and the

girls won all their matches to go through to the final becoming the first team to win the

Mark Fitzmaurice trophy for the school.

29th May – Ms. Aoife Connelly began work experience for the week

30th May – The Cumann na mBunscol girls 7-a-side championship county final took pace at

Loughgeorge with a large crowd of supporters travelling to cheer on the team. Glinsk played

Lavally/ Brownsgrove which started out a very tight match but as the girls settled into the

match, they fought for every ball, took points well and scored two super goals to win yet

another county title within the year. The team returned to Glinsk via Curraghbridge and

Keelogues with many bonfires greeting their victorious return.

31st May

• 6th class pupils attended Glenamaddy Community School for an induction day

• Mr. Bert Curley visited the school and presented a most fascinating and interesting

talk on honey bees, the important work they do and shortage of wild honey bees.

Pupils appreciated the importance of looking after habitats which benefits the honey

bees. Bert brought his hive, built it before the pupils, showed honey combs to the

pupils which had a beautiful smell. Pupils were fascinated to see his collection of

honey bees and in particular the honey bee!

1st June - This year Pope Francis blessed 6 statues of Our Lady of Fatima which are travelling

the world. One of those 6 statues are currently in Ireland. Sr. Ruth, Sr. Bernadette, Sr.

Michelle and Sr. Karen of The Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother who live in

Roscommon visited the school on the occasion of the centenary of the apparition of Our

Lady at Fatima. The nuns talked to us about their devotion to Our Lady and about their time

when they lived in Spain. They sang hymns devoted to Our Lady with us and it was really

nice to have one of the 6 specially blessed statues of Our Lady visit our school.

6th June – Maria Fitzmaurice hosted a baking class with 6th class pupils who baked a variety

of sweet and savoury products which included queen cakes and delicious homemade brown

bread.

7th June – Flor O’Mahony hosted a most interesting workshop for each classroom on hearing and sign language. Pupils learned about how we hear by playing games, role-playing the different parts of the ear. Pupils also learned about deafness and how people can use sign-language to communicate. Flor taught us all the letters of the alphabet in sign language and then we signed our own names and learned to sign whole words. All pupils received handy pocket size cards with all the sign language signs so they can continue practicing.

8th June – Maria Fitzmaurice hosted another baking class for 6th class

10th June – The National Parents Council annual conference took place at the National

College of Ireland, Dublin. The theme for this year’s conference was Shaping our Future

with a number of keynote speakers addressing the audience on topics including Narrowing

the Gap: Parental Involvement in Children’s Learning & Learning through Play (Lego 6

Bricks project). The Fred O’Connell awards which recognise and acknowledge the work and

role of parent associations in school were announced at the conference. Congratulations to

Ginsk Parents Association who received a highly commended award for their entry which

was accepted by Maria Fitzmaurice, Nuala Neary and Teresa Brennan who attended the

conference and later met with the Minister for Education Mr. Richard Bruton T.D.

11th June – Aoibhe Brennan was selected by Cumann na mBuncol to play at the half-time

exhibition game during the Galway v Mayo Connaught Gaelic Football semi-final at Pearse

12th June – Pupils starting school in September spent the morning in the school familiarising

themselves with their classroom and surrounding. The Parents Association hosted a coffee

welcome for all parents before they collected their children at lunchtime. Information from

the N.P.C. conference was available for all families and each family received a copy of the

Parents Association annual report for 2016 – 2017

13th June

• R.S.E. talk for parents of 6th class at Creggs N.S.

• Pupils from 4th & 5th class has a baking class with Maria Fitzmaurice with pupils

having an opportunity to wear the new customised school aprons, featuring the

school crest which the Parents Association had made for baking lessons with pupils.

Pupils baked chocolate chip-cookies, chocolate biscuit cake and homemade brown

bread.

15th June

• Junior & Senior Infants went on their school tour to Upsie Daisies & the Fire-station in

Roscommon. They had a great time and got see the fire-station locker room, the fire

engine and all the cutting equipment inside it and best of all was using the water

hose!

• The F.A.I. boys’ soccer finals took place at Donamon. The boys won all their matches

in their group against Aughrim N.S., Granlahan N.S. and Woodbrook N.S. They played

Loughglynn N.S. in the final and weather conditions were extremely bad and the boys

faced very tough opposition. The final was their 4th match in a row and they were

unlucky not to come away with silver-wear after a great team performance all day.

We are very grateful to Martin Hegarty & James Shevlin, parents & grandparents who

coached & encouraged the boys on the day.

F.A.I. soccer finals at Donamon

16th June – The annual Tom Lohan and Noel Connelly memorial Gaelic football competitions

for boys and girls from Glinsk N.S. Creggs N.S. Ardeevin N.S. and Lisheen N.S. took place at

Glinsk G.A.A. pitch. The girls team retained the Noel Connelly memorial shield follow

another great team performance throughout the day. Creggs N.S. boys retained the Tom

Lohan memorial cup.

The skills competition for girls was won by Creggs N.S. and the boys skills competition was

won by Glinsk N.S. Members of the Connelly family presented the winning shields on the

day. We are very grateful to James Shevlin, Stephen Neary, Jason Fannon and Eamonn

Hegarty for all their throughout the day, the Parents Association for providing refreshments

and treats for the teams. A very sporting occasion was enjoyed by all with great support for

the teams on the day. We are very grateful to the Connelly & Lohan families for supporting

this tournament.

19th June – The F.A.I soccer finals for girls took place at Donamon in beautiful sunshine.

Glinsk girls played Threen N.S., Woodbrook N.S. and Loughglynn on their way to another

final. The played Threen N.S. in the final which was initially a very tight match but the girls

form showed through and they went on to win 4-2 collecting a final title to add to their

considerable collection from the year. Many parents travelled to support and cheer on the

girls who were also greeted with a bonfire on return to Glinsk and more supporters

gathered to congratulate the team. Thank you to the Parents Association who treated all the

pupils and both the boys and girls’ teams to refreshments at Cuisle on both days of the F.A.I.

competitions.

20th June – R.S.E. talk for 6th class pupils and their parents took place at Creggs N.S.

21st June – A fun sports day for all pupils took place which included running races, traditional

races such as the egg & spoon, sack race, 3-legged race, with novelty races including the

newspaper race, teddy bear race and the obstacle race which required much concentration

& skill.

22nd June – 1st – 6th class school tour to Horizon Adventure Centre in Westport and Hanley’s

Equestrian Centre in Claremorris took place. Pupils had a very busy activity filled day with

pupils’ wall climbing, fencing, laser tag, high rope climbing, night-line activity which required

much concentration and trust!! At the Equestrian Centre, all pupils got to go horse riding

with horses moving from a walk, to a trot and a canter on different size ponies suitable to

their age.

1st – 6th class school tour

23rd June – Fr. Larry celebrated the end of year school mass in the school hall, with pupils in

the senior room serving, reading the reading, prayers of the faithful & communion

reflections. After mass Gabrielle Kilcommons was presented with her Bord Gáis Energy

Student Theatre plague award and all 6th class pupils were presented with the school Bord

Gáis Student Theatre plague. All 6th class pupils were wished well on the next phase of their

education as they completed primary school having achieved so much between them all

across all curricular areas, drama and sport.

26th June – All pupils and staff were kindly treated to a BBQ prepared and cooked by Tony &

Daniel Scappaticci. It went donw a treat with everyone and was the “best day of school

ever!” according to the infants! Thank you also to Glinsk G.A.A. who donated food to the

BBQ.

27th June

• Awards presentations took place – sports day medals, trophies, soccer league medals

& trophies, basketball league medals & trophies, & project vouchers were presented

in the school hall. Pupils from 4th – 6th class received Sports World token vouchers for

the lunchtime hall duties rota with all pupils helping to keep the lunch room tidy.

• Pupil received Discover Primary Science & maths Foundation certificates in

recognition of the STEM work throughout. The school DPSM STEM plaque of

excellence arrived at the school also.

• We wish 6th class pupils Ciara O’Neill, Éimear Keane, Gabrielle Kilcommons, Tegan

Neary, Sarah-Jane Trayers, Ava Joyce & Aoibhe Brennan every happiness and success

in Glenamaddy Community School.

• All pupils wished Tegan Neary well who plays at the All Ireland semi-final Cumann na

mBunscol half-time exhibition match at Croke Park on the 20th of August.

5th July – N.C.S.E. (National Council for Special Education) announced school S.N.A.

allocations for 2017 – 2018 with Glinsk N.S. allocated one S.N.A. post.

20th August – Tegan Neary played at Croke Park at the Cumann na mBunscol half-time

exhibition match during the Kerry v Mayo All-Ireland football semi-final.
