Glendale Unified School District Open Source Math Curriculum Grade 5 Parent Information Unit 2: Decimals and Beginning Fractions What Your Child Will Learn: In this unit, students’ understanding of the patterns in the base-ten systems is extended from Grade 4’s work with place value of multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to hundredths to the thousandths place. Students deepen their knowledge through a more generalized understanding of the relationships between and among adjacent places on the place value chart and apply their new understandings as they reason about and perform decimal operations through the hundredths place. Students apply patterns of the base-ten systems to mental strategies and a sequential study of multiplication via area model and distributive property leading to fluency with the standard algorithm. Students move from whole numbers to multiplication with decimals, again using place value as a guide to reason. A similar sequence for division takes place concretely with number disks, which assists students to divide multi-digit whole number and decimal dividends. In addition, students’ understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions extends from earlier work with fraction equivalence and decimals. This unit marks a significant shift away from elementary grades’ centrality of base-ten units to the study and use of the full set of fractional units from Grade 5 forward, especially as applied to algebra. MORE SPECIFICALLY, CHILDREN WILL LEARN HOW TO: Recognize the magnitude of 10 on the place value. Read, write, and compare decimals. Round decimals. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals. Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Standards: 5.NBT.1, 5.NBT.3, 5.NBT.4, 5.NBT.7, 5.NF.1, 5.NF.2 SAMPLE PROBLEMS: 5.NBT.1 10 x 4.2 = 42 (10 times larger than 4.2) 4 ÷ 10 = 0.4 ( 1 10 of 4) 5.NBT.3

Students deepen their knowledge through a more generalized understanding of the relationships between and among adjacent places on the place value chart and apply their new understandings as they reason about and perform decimal operations through the hundredths place. ● Recognize the magnitude of 10 on the place value. ● Read, write, and compare decimals.● Round decimals.● Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals.● Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

5.NBT.4When rounding 14.235, students are most likely deciding to round to either either 14.2 or 14.3 – that is, “14 and 200 thousandths” or “14 and 300 thousandths. Students focus on rounding 235, which rounds down to 200, therefore, 14.235 rounds down to 14.200.5.NBT.74 – 0.3
