In the Loop Glencoe United Methodist Church January 2017 A new year stands before us, like a chapter is waiting to be written here at Glencoe United Methodist church. We can come together and help write that story by setting new goals. Questions are to be asked and answers are to be embraced. We can learn from each other and create new beginnings together. Time travels forward and we are to look forward and never look backward. I have been working over the past twenty years with many other churches. I always heard: “we have always done it like his before”. While that is good; we must give an opportunity for change to improve ourselves and use our gifts in our walk with God. Here at Glencoe we have the tools, talents, and experience of making this happen. God tells us in Ecclesiastes 3:1-13 there is a time and a season for everything. It states new beginnings bring new life into a new year of planting, building bridges, healing, gathering stones instead of throwing stones, a time of war and a time of peace. In this passage God said, “God has made everything fitting in its time, but has also placed eternity in their heart, without enabling them to discover what God has done from beginning to end.” In this passage lets follow what God said, and put it to work here at Glencoe. This is the gift of God: that all people would eat, drink, and enjoy the results of their hard work in making this happen. This year I plan to have Bible Studies and create new programs together using volunteers. So, let’s learn from the past but look forward and make disciples of Jesus Christ. Let’s make 2017 a year we will not regret but a year full of hopes, dreams, and a love for our church that we will never forget. A quote from Neil Galman that is so true: “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’re never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH OF YOU AND MAY GOD AND JESUS CHRIST BE FIRST IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE, THIS NEW YEAR (2017). January 2017

A new year stands before us, like a chapter is waiting to be written here at Glencoe United Methodist church. In this passage God said, “God has made everything fitting in its time, but has also placed eternity in their heart, without enabling them to discover what God has done from beginning to end.” In this passage lets follow what God said, and put it to work here at Glencoe. This year I plan to have Bible Studies and create new programs together using volunteers. So, let’s learn from the past but look forward and make disciples of Jesus Christ. Happy New Year

RIF Update/Reading Buddy Our second book distribution for this school year was held at Bethany Elementary on December 12th & 13th. We distributed 434 books to 217 students in grades 1-4. It is exciting to watch the children select their books. The teachers & staff are so appreciative for Glencoe to be in their school. Thanks so much to Donnell Walker, Zach Hilton, Jackie Linville, Selena Scott & Steve Dixon for labeling the books; and Kenny Jones, Donnell Walker, Jackie Linville, Lori Perri, Selena Scott, Larry Scott, Cheryl Doolittle, Bill Doolittle & Steve Dixon for volunteering at the book give away. Right now, we have 12 reading buddies reading with 19 children. We have four new buddies that will begin after the New Year. Please consider becoming a reading buddy. You can help a child become a better reader by giving just 30 minutes a week. I appreciate so much your prayers for this program.

    A Prayer for Every Day

    by Mary Carolyn Davies

MAKE ME too brave to lie or be unkind. Make me too understanding, too, to mind The little hurts companions give, and friends, The careless hurts that no one quite intends. Make me too thoughtful to hurt others so. Help me to know The inmost hearts of those for whom I care, Their secret wishes, all the loads they bear, That I may add my courage to their own. May I make lonely folks feel less alone, And happy ones a little happier yet. May I forget What ought to be forgotten; and recall Unfailing, all That ought to be recalled, each kindly thing, Forgetting what might sting. To all upon my way, Day after day, Let me be joy, be hope! Let my life sing!

    *Submitted by Barbara Walker

A special thanks to all the people who participated in all the events that we had during the Christmas Holidays. You made them a success. There were so many people helping, it is impossible to name all of you. So, I say THANK YOU to everyone, your participation. May God Bless You! Anita

  • Food for Thought Happy (hopeful) 2017 You are probably thinking when you read ‘hopeful’ that I don’t watch the news on TV. How could anyone, you question, have any hope when all you see is mayhem, full cities destroyed, children running for their lives, starving and being killed by those who wage war in the name of their religion. And on this side of the Atlantic we are killing our own when we can’t solve an argument or we grow intolerant of anyone who doesn’t look like us or worship our God. Politicians who all have the right answers even though they differ on how to solve all the problems of our nation. Even in our churches we have created a divide over petty problems, we gossip and spread rumors just to justify our opinion thereby destroying lifelong friendships. All this tends to depress us to the point of hopelessness. Well it shouldn’t! The same God who led the Israelites though forty years in the desert is ready to lead us out of the quagmire that we have gotten ourselves into. Have we forgotten God? He for sure has not forgotten us and He keeps His promises (Psalm 146). When we read the accounts of those forty years, of how the Israelites complained the whole journey, although God provided for their every need, they were never happy. God’s plan for our salvation was at work then, as it is now. We just may need to step back and try to see the big picture and what may be our role in the nature of our nation and indeed the whole world situation. In 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, the Apostle Paul writes about faith, hope and love. We might ask ourselves where our faith is when we run out of hope. And can we really show God’s love without either faith or hope? Most of us can recite by heart some of this chapter. Where does it lead us to change our thinking for the New Year? We can always share our hope with those who may be going through bad times, lost a loved one or just running low on optimism. We can certainly always show Christ’s love through a visit, phone call or card. If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of such a gesture you know how great it feels, speaking from experience.

Again, I say Happy (hopeful) 2017
