PRESIDENTS REPORT

This past year has been one of some new initiatives undertaken by our club,

namely the commencement of a Satellite Club of Glen Innes and the running

of a bike ride from Glen Innes to Goondiwindi. The Satellite Club has been

formed after much effort by Graham and Rose Price who have recruited

eight new members to our club. Not ones to rest of their laurels they head-

ed a committee that organised and ran the Glen Innes to Goondiwindi Bike

Ride which has raised $10.000 for Rural Mental Health Research.

We pride ourselves in providing worthwhile programs for young people

from our district, and to this end we sent young locals to RYPEN, RYLA, MU-

NA, RYTS, and also sent students to the Inverell Science and Engineering

Challenge. The club also helped Maclean Club by hosting German Exchange

Student Vincent Strick for the first half of his stay in Australia. Steve Rudd

organised a very successful Youth Citizens Awards Evening for young stu-

dents in our local area. These awards recognise those students that show

exemplary standards of leadership and conduct at their respective schools.

Rotary prides itself in recognising those who contribute to so much in our

community. We sponsor a Pride in Workmanship Award at the Glen Innes

Examiner Business Awards Night, and this year it was deservedly won by Eve

Chappell. Also at this night one of our senior club members Harvey Young

won the Icon in Business Award. Well done Harvey.

Richard and Margo Rowe together with Glen Innes Quota ran a free sausage

sizzle in the main street prior to Christmas. This was well received by the

public and a credit to all our members who helped. As part of our commu-

nity involvement we ran our regular free sausage sizzle at the Christmas

Carols. Dutchy and helpers organised the kid’s games at the Australia Day

Celebrations. We continue to maintain our public profile by manning the

gates at the Celtic Festival. A job for which we get paid and also our annual

selling of tickets in the Melbourne Cup Sweep.

PRISCILLA HALL MEMORIAL FOUNDATION

The Clubs PHMF sub-committee has been involved in two RAWCS projects in 2014/15. Project No 121-2011-12 Mama Sayang Indonesia. Funds raised from the 2013 Hungi were allocated to the Mama Sayang Coach Fund in February 2014. The Foundation from their Indonesian funds contributed US$5000.00. This Funding was very important in that it established the need & that all do-nations regardless of the amount would assist Mama Sayang to reach the tar-get required .The target was reached in April 2015 and the new coach is due for delivery in July 2015. Full details can be viewed on their web site: http://www.mamasayang.org/bus-fund.

Project No 32-2009-10 Food Plant Solutions www.foodplantsolutions.org In December 2013 because no Indonesian Rotary Clubs had volunteered to assist in bringing the nutrition program to Indonesia The PHMF partnered with FPS. The PHMF knowledge & contacts have been a perfect blend with FPS over many months .In May 2015 the Field Guides & Documentation were complet-ed.

This information giving full details can be viewed and printed from the FPS web site as well as www.PriscillaHall.org we hope you have the interest to view this information as we believe it reflects a Major International project that is not only in place now but also for the years ahead. The project work continues:

The Club has recently submitted a District 9640 Grant application to fund the printing of the documents in the local Bahasa language. Don & Frances Hall plan to visit Indonesia in June/July 2015 to discuss further the impletion of the program.

PRESIDENTS REPORT(con’t)

We renewed our contact with the Bruderhoff Community with a visit to

their facility where we had lunch with them and were shown over their

sign making workshop. They provided manpower to help us when we

were upgrading the pathway and handrails on Tregurtha Way. They

offered to help us with workers if we required them at any time in the fu-

ture. The High School Hospitality Students hosted the club for a tasty din-

ner at the High School, and afterwards we were shown over the Trade

Training Centre. This evening gave the hospitality students credits towards

their course.

Elton Squires, Patric Millar and Dick Hartmann have organised an inter-

esting panel of guest speakers to address and entertain us. We once again

had a fun evening of bowls and the Bowling Club where everyone compet-

ed for the “Murray” Trophy. This year Don Hall was the victor. Combined

dinners were held as usual with our Rotary friends from both Tenterfield

and Guyra Clubs. These are fun nights and are enjoyed by everyone.

The major fundraiser events this year went off well. The Melbourne Cup

Sweep, The Celtic Festival Gates task, the Glen to Goondiwindi bike ride,

and the Hungi have all been successful.

My thanks to all club members who willingly gave their support to me as

president and to my board members who worked so well to keep the club

running smoothly. I would like to thank the wise council of the senior

members who helped me so much this past year. Their advice was invalu-

able and made my year a memorable one.

My wife Mavis was most helpful and understanding, especially with typing.

CLUB SERVICE

Club Service has had a busy year involving a variety of functions. Our venue at the Services Club with private bar and very supportive relationship with the caterer affords our members excellent value. Our $20 dinner fee covers a 2 course meal, contribution to the Every Rotarian Every Year plus raffle fee.

Richard Rowe our diligent Sergeant has done an excellent job extracting funds, always with an entertaining touch. The Club Bulletin(The Spokesman) always well reported by Mike Condon. Mike is spearheading a steady transi-tion to utilizing state of the art features of Club Runner. Patric Millar, assist-ed on occasions by John Lynn, has kept an excellent variety of Programs, interspersed with fellowship and club assembly nights. Fellowship and pro-gram are vital elements to an enjoyable dinner meeting. Thank you, Patric.

We recognize that Membership and Public Relations are key activities in Rotary. The demographics in smaller rural communities vary considerably from the higher density population in urban areas of this district. In a small-er regional centre such as ours, the best advertising is word of mouth and being seen in your community. We do, of course, also support radio, TV and newspaper promotions where appropriate. The club held a membership night with emphasis on membership development and regular Rotary Infor-mation sessions.. We find that Membership & PR is a shared responsibility amongst all members. Two new members were inducted this year and our present membership is 34. This club has formed a satellite club, being the first in District 9640.

As a seventy seven year old club, we continually add to the club’s history. For safe keeping, older and more pertinent records are stored at our local history museum, considered one of the best museums of its type in regional NSW. A shipping container is in the final stages of restoration for storage of barbeque trailer, cutlery, crockery, linen and like items.

A report from PP Graham Price follows: Rotary Satellite Club of Glen Innes AM - Graham Price. Following Council on Legislation in 2013 a Rotary club is now able to establish its own Satellite Club.

YOUTH SERVICE(Cont)

Harvey Young, Mike Condon, Steve Rudd and Adrian Whitten attended the Inverell Rotary Science and Engineering Challenge at the RMS Club Inverell to assist in the running of events.

Glen Innes High School came second in the competition this year. Congratu-lations to Greg and Sue Moran (Inverell Rotary) for this fantastic event. It is inspiring to see the students excited and enjoying their learning. The club has also received a nomination to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra. The club has agreed to sponsor Katie Hodder and wish-es her all the best in the selection process.

Rotary Youth programs help benefit young people in our district and with-out the club support and assistance from members our young people would miss out. Our club’s funds are limited therefore I believe it should be our goal to continue targeting young people that would benefit most from our wide range of youth programs.

The Glen Innes club hosted a Youth Exchange Program (YEP) student from Germany for six months. Vincent Strick was hosted by Graham & Rose Price, Bill & Meg Liston and by the Cook family who had Jessica recently take part in the YEP in Belgium. Thank you to all these families who helped Vincent enjoy Glen Innes and all it has to offer.

Thank you to all.

Sophie Sharman and Carter Goard – St Josephs

Thanks to Schafer’s Newsagent for assisting with arrangements of prizes.

RYTS This seminar is all about the skills young people will need in the transition from the sheltered environments of home and school to go out into the big wide world. Many of the kids have said it is the best week of their lives. The RYTS team consisted of 4 Rotarians and 10 young people who have been through the RYLA program. This year Glen Innes Rotary sponsored 2 participants, Molly Keelan and Kia Boney. Congratulations to Ken Barker and John McKenny for another successful RYTS camp.

This was Ken and John’s final year and much appreciation goes to them for their long and consistent efforts.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) had three participants from Glen Innes: Cameron Amos, Nikki Berridge, and Cameron Stewart.

The club sponsored two teams from the Glen Innes High School for the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) program. Six students trav-elled to the coast for this exciting program. Tanya Heagney, Alexandra Millar, Eleanor Malone, Katie Hodder, Edmund Malone and Jacky Wu. Thank you to Jill Malone from the Glen Innes High School for her efforts in making this program happen. Thanks to Graham and Rose Price for their efforts. Graham and Rose are no longer on the District RYLA com-mittee and are to be commended for their dedication to this great program.

CLUB SERVICE(con’t)

Following some early doubts from members with concerns of loss of mem-bership, a Club Assembly was held to provide a Questions and Answers opportunity for members. The Board ultimately agreed to support the es-tablishment of a morning or AM satellite club of our Monday night Glen Innes Club. Several morning information breakfasts were held which saw about 20 people attend to find more information. Regular fortnightly meetings have been held since early 2015.

Changeover will see seven (7) new members inducted into the Rotary Sat-ellite Club of Glen Innes AM. An eighth prospective member is unable to attend Changeover. The Rotary Satellite Club of Glen Innes AM is an ex-tension of the Glen Innes Club and offer an alternative meeting time and place to the normal Monday night meetings. Meetings will be held fort-nightly with the option for a make-up on Monday nights, in addition to the community service guidelines as outlined by Rotary International, so as to allow members to meet their attendance requirements. The club is meeting fortnightly at 7.00 am for breakfast and is rotating around local breakfast establishments, breakfast is optional and at the persons own cost. Members will be required to pay the normal Club subscription costs and pay $6.00 per meeting towards the Every Rotarian Every Year Pro-gram. There are no minimum numbers required to form a Satellite Club other than the expectation that the club have sufficient numbers to con-duct its meeting and programmes. The Satellite Club is rotating the Chair to run its fortnightly meetings.

The administrative, membership and financial returns of the Satellite Club remain the responsibility of the Rotary Club of Glen Innes. A number of Monday night members are using the Satellite Club to fulfil their attend-ance requirement and members are more than welcome to attend at any time.

Thanks again to all my committee members, club members and friends of Rotary who contributed so ably to a very successful year in Club Service. To President Peter a special thanks for his encouraging leadership during the year.

VOCATIONAL SERVICE Having attended the annual Celtic Festival in Glen Innes, a group of approx. 40 enthusiastic caravanners including partners from the District 9640 Rotary Vo-cational Fellowship group joined us for our regular Monday night dinner meeting. A great night was had by all. Some of the visitors had travelled long distances from interstate. “This is your life” talks were given by several members. Harvey Young talked most interestingly about Chinese settlement in Glen Innes from 1876 onwards. The Chinese were a predominant part of our community but in recent years have either returned to China or moved on to urban communities. Kwong Sing’s Emporium still operates in Glen Innes. It was founded by Harvey’s family and is still managed by the family. Matt Goldman superintendent of the local Fire Station and Rob Lewis a local grazier also gave very interesting addresses on their private, community and business lives. We were delighted to join the Bruderhof community (near Inverell) for lunch. It was a beautiful sunny day and well attended by Rotarians, their partners and families. Previously, the community brought a small bus load of volunteers to Glen Innes to assist with construction of Tregurtha Way. As gracious hosts, they showed us around their well known sign making operation in addition to other community facilities. We have an excellent relationship with the com-munity and they have extended an offer to return at any time. Pride of Workmanship Awards-Gary teVelde-The 11th annual business awards were again conducted by the Glen Innes Examiner on September 5th. Rotary again sponsored the “Senior Employee Pride in Workmanship Award”. This year’s recipient was Eve Chappell for her tremendous work at the History House. A total of 14 nominations were received for the Rotary award. Rotary is the only sponsor that has supported these awards since inauguration and the only service club to do so. Television icon Kerrie-Anne Kennerley was the spe-cial guest and along with Examiner Manager Richard Quinn provided a won-derful night of entertainment. A crowd of over 400 people jammed the Services Club auditorium and the presentations were a delight to attend. This is a great local initiative and Rota-ry is proud to be associated with it again this year. Rotary was represented by President Peter, Gary and Dick.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish the incoming board all the best for next year.

Dick Hartmann Vocational Service Director

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

The club is proactive in supporting EVERY ROTARIAN EVERY YEAR and has met or exceeded donation targets. We are mindful of our PHF credits accrued. Each year In November(Foundation Month), our regular caterer pro-vides us, free of charge, with a special meal, typically a bowl of fla-voured rice. With this restricted menu, the club hopes to highlight the plight of poorer nations and recognize the enormous help TRF has given with its many Hunger projects. Normal dinner fees are collected and proceeds are donated to The Foundation, often to a specific project such as Polio Plus. Paul Harris Fellows usually assist with serving and cleanup after the meal. Graham Price delivered an update on The Foundation supported by a comprehensive visual presentation. This annual presentation ensures members present are updated with the Foundation’s activities. Unlike many previous years, we did not host an incoming GSE team. Glen Innes Severn Council, WT Signs and Showtime Toilets and Showers. Our catering team headed by local caterer Jude Cox also were great help, with Jude and her team donating their time to the ride and also providing gourmet style food along the way. Jude was very generous also in do-nating much of the home baked and pre-prepared “goodies” along the way. The ride was well supported by the Club members who without their support and generosity the ride would not have been possible. The ride was enjoyed by all who took part, with it providing a great social event for Club members. It is hoped that the Club will again support a ride to Conference most like-ly starting in Tenterfield and concluding in Murwillumbah in May 2016. A huge thank you to all our hard working members, who assisted in mak-ing the activities another great success.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Our club had another very busy, enjoyable and successful year, raising funds for several Rotary projects. Melbourne Cup - This annual fund-raiser was again a great success, thanks to a big commitment from most of our members, who spent a lot of time selling tickets in the main street. With club members buying an average of two to three books each out of their own pockets, we managed to make $4500 to $5000 this year, which is on par with the last couple of years. Carols in the Anglican Church - With sausages, onion, sauce on bread and butter, donated by Rotary, we offered a free barbeque snack for those attending the Xmas Carols at the Holy Trinity Church prior to Christmas. Australia Day - Rotary volunteers organised fun games, activities and re-wards, mainly for kids prior to the Australia Day Awards, at the Show-grounds. Always a fun event. Hangi - Our seventh hangi, held at the end of May, at the Golf Club, turned out to be a huge success, as there were well over 150 hungry people there, enjoying great food and entertainment. A big thank you to Ken and Joyce, and their willing Rotary helpers, who as usual, put in a huge effort to pull it all off masterfully. Half the proceeds this year going to the Glen Innes Hospi-tal Helipad appeal, ($2000); $1000 to RYTS and $1000 to RYLA Programs. Well done! Bowel Scan - Gary teVelde. “Bowel Scan Month” is a brown ribbon event for Glen Innes Rotary and held in May. A new and improved kit has been released this year and the cost has risen to $15.00. It still represents very good value compared to commercially available kits which cost $33.00 plus processing. Bowel cancer, if detected early, is very treatable, but early de-tection is vital. The government is becoming more involved with issuing free kits but this will take 5 years to make any impact. Rotary is playing an important role educating people in the need to partici-pate each year to cope with this cancer which is second only to lung cancer as a killer. Each year over 15000 people are told that they have bowel can-cer and 4000 die from this cancer each year. Australian Rotary Health, sup-ports and promotes the programs of Bowelscan. Allocating over $3.2million for medical research in 2015, ARH are one of the largest providers in Aus-tralia. Special thanks to Graydon’s and Timb’s pharmacies for distributing the kits.

COMMUNITY SERVICE(con’t)

A new fundraising initiative from Australian Rotary Health, Hat Day, was taken up by the club and held in October last year. The styles, form and colour of hats was limited only by the imagination of the club members, guests and families. A lot of fun, lots of prizes, and funds raised for a great cause. ARH is the second largest provider of funds for health research in Australia and a leading provider of funds for Rural Mental Health research. Celtic Festival - 23rd year: Gate Operation 2015 - John McKenny. With improved weather conditions from last year, the Australian Celtic Fes-tival was better attended, giving our club members plenty to do, as admis-sions were collected for the weekend. 138 member hours were provided by 26 club members and five new and willing AM (almost) “members”, collecting about half of what was collected four years ago, as people are now buying tickets on line, and some being careful about the weather, waiting until Saturday morning and checking the weather out before paying to attend. There has been an increase in sales at the Visitors’ Information Centre also. Next year, it is anticipated that there’ll be two collection points only, reduc-ing our required numbers somewhat, as the Celtic Committee continually improves on the way thing are done “on the hill”. On behalf of Director John Lynn, my sincere thanks to all who assisted with this great community activity. “Giving back 2 the givers” – Richard Rowe. A project aimed at helping to revive the main street community in their recent upheaval during recon-struction works. The project was giving a free brunch, (also to the shop keepers) on the 7 Saturdays leading up to Christmas, creating a festive feel, as well as drawing folk back to the shopping area! We created a first, with other service clubs joining with us to make it a success! Lions, Lioness, Leos, Quota, all helped make the event a wonderful experience, culminating in a positive response, from business owners, who saw a better than envisaged Christmas trading period! Sponsorship exceeding $2000-00 made the project achievable with the ma-jor sponsor being the GIen Innes Tourist association. As well, Coles & Wool-worths, RSL sub branch, WT. Signs, the Examiner, Red Range Rural Fire Ser-vice and a great response from fellow Rotarians; all are to be thanked. Goodwill from main street businesses & their thanks to all the contributors indicate our efforts were worthwhile!

COMMUNITY SERVICE(con’t)

Ride to Conference - Graham Price April 14th to Friday 17th saw the inaugu-ral Glen Innes Rotary Club Ride to Conference held. The 285 km cycle ride commenced in Glen Innes with participants arriving in Goondiwindi in time to attend the District 9640 Conference. The ride was the idea of Glen Innes Rotary Club member, Rose Price, who after attending the inspirational goal setting talk by Keith Abrahams at the 2014 District 9640 Conference in Stanthorpe, set a goal of riding a bike from Glen Innes to Goondiwindi. The Club supported the program and a small working group met every Mon-day night to work on all the logistics of organising such a ride. Whilst only 13 riders took part in the ride the goal of raising $10,000 towards rural men-tal health research was achieved. A cheque will be forwarded to Australian Rotary Health to support a suitable mental health research program which will ultimately help people living in rural Australia. Whilst the ride raised money we also supported the business and organisations along the way. Morning teas were provided by local P&C organisations and accommoda-tion provided by local businesses or sporting organisations.

A big thank you must go out to our sponsors who without their support our fund raising goal would not have been achieved. In particular a big thanks to our principal sponsors of Crowe Horwath and Find Rural and major spon-sor Eastmon Digital. Other sponsors included Graydon’s Amcal Pharmacy, Timbs Pharmacy, AMH Medical Centre, Glen Innes Services Club, Deepwater Foodworks Supermarket,
