    Tuesday we have a

    chance to prove that

    Chris Seelbachs first

    election was not a fluke

    and that he deserves a

    second term regardless

    of his sexuality.

    Any person running

    for office should be

    elected because of his

    or her character and de-

    sire to serve the public.

    I have watched Chris

    since he first walked

    into a youth group. Ive

    watched him as he grew

    into one our best coun-

    cil members. GLBT News en-

    dorses Chris.

    Another member of

council we have ob-served for years is

    Roxanne Qualls.

    This will be her sec-

    ond time as mayor if

    she is elected. The first

    time under other rules

    she was elected because

    she got the most votes

    of all other candidates.

    That alone says some-

    thing about Qualls.

    This time she wants

to lead the city into a

    new future and not

back us up into a horse

    and buggy mentality.

    She supports a street-

    car which should have

been built years ago aspart of an area rapid

    transit system.

    Look at Atlanta and

Portland. Of course aloop downtown isnt

much but it is a begin-

    ning and she wants to

    continue the line into

    Uptown and the Uni-

    versity/hospital area.

    We endorse Roxanne

    for mayor.

    This issue contains

    Ads from candidates

    who felt it was impor-

    tant to spend some of

    their election funds to

    tell the GLBT Commu-

    nity they are there for

    us. We endorse them

    also.

    On the back page is

    the endorsement list ofEquality Cincinnati.

It is our goal to record the positive contributions GLBTpeople make to their community and the localcommunity at large. While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw thepositive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models ofhow human beings should or could react to each other and how famil ies should support loved ones whoselives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, diedof AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hateCrime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

Sen. Harry Reid hasannounced that he will

    allow the Employment

    Non-Discrimination

    Act (ENDA) to come to

    the floor of the U.S.

    Senate for a vote this

    week.

    Current polling

    shows that it lacks one

vote for passage. This isa major issue for the

    GLBT Community

    because it provides

    protection against

    discrimination in the

    workplace and in

    various other aspects ofliving.

    In 29 states there are

    no laws protecting

    those in the GLBT

    Community from being

    fired or denied employ-

    ment because of their

    sexual preferences.

    Along with that, in 33

    states transgenders canbe denied employment

    simply because of who

    they are.

    While ENDA is a

    major protection for

    GLBT people, it is

more than that. This isa true civil rightsissue.

This is a fight to ensure

    that no American has to

live in fear of losing a

    job because of who they

    are and who they love.

    Call your U.S.

    Senators office and let

    them know that you

expect them to vote infavor of ENDA. In

    Ohio, the local number

    for Sen. Sherrod Brown

    is (513) 684-1021,

    www.brown.senate.gov

    and Sen. Rob Port-man

    is (513) 444-4568.

    www.portman.senate.gov

    . Remember, how they

    vote demonstrates their

    true support for the

    Community or only lip

    service.

ENDA up for vote this week

    them to file individual

state tax returns. In response, Freedom-

    Ohio co-founder Ian

    James said, The irony

    here is that since the

    state of Ohio is

    forbidden to recognize

    legal marriages of

    same-gender couples, it

    forces married Gay

couples to file taxesindividual rather than

    jointly, and in turn gives

    significant tax benefit

    to married Gay couples

    that married straight

    couples are not

    permitted to receive.

    While many will

    appreciate the extra tax

    benefits, this separate
