A program of The Corning Museum of Glass
The goal:
Designs that respond to the full potential
of glass as a material
The problem:
Limited opportunities for designers
to freely experiment with hot glassmaking processes
The solution:
GlassLab
Glass is an ancient material that
has shaped and changed our world.
Access to hot glassmaking processes
is limited and opportunities for
designers to freely experiment
with the material are rare.
We bring the glass. You bring your sketchbook.
GlassLab’s mobile equipment can be deployed virtually anywhere.
Ten–Day Design Retreats
Held annually at Domaine de Boisbuchet
in Lessac, France. Presented in collaboration
with The Vitra Design Museum and CIRECA.
Multi-Day Design Performances
Presented at public design venues such as
Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum;
Design Miami, and Vitra Design Museum.
Half-Day Design Workshops
Offered at The Corning Museum of Glass
and select locations around the world

Process
In GlassLab sessions, designers collaborate
with master glassmakers from The Corning
Museum of Glass to freely experiment with
hot glass. Designers bring their sketchbooks
and work alongside master glassmakers in a
mobile glassblowing hot shop. Participants
have the rare opportunity to rapidly prototype
design concepts in glass and to learn
from the properties of glass that
they observe and discover.
