Mosaic of Peace Travelogue Vol VII July 13
BDS. Boycott. Divestment. Sanctions. Economic sanctions have been used around the world for the last 2
centuries to convince a country or regime to change its ways by affecting their economy. Our denomination
has, over the years, supported boycotts and divestment actions. One of the most well-known and successful
actions was the apartheid sanctions against South Africa (SA) of which the US government supported through
legislation in 1986. Many nations of the world participated and eventually helped to pave the way for the
dissolution of apartheid, leading to democratic elections that all of SA’s people could vote in. Rev. Desmond
Tutu has had much to say about the oppressive conditions under which the Palestinians live. He believes the
apartheid that they live under is worse than what the blacks and mixed race persons faced in SA.
Not all agree that sanctions work. Ardi Gelmann, our host in Efrat, unequivocally believes BDS is having no
effect. Within our Mosaic of Peace group we had a dissenter. There are mixed feelings in our country.
Omar Barghouti, a leader in the BDS movement, believes in the movement. We met Omar in Ramallah. He is
known as an enemy of Israel and is currently under a travel ban. He had much difficulty leaving Israel to ac-
cept the 2017 Ghandi Peace award. His name was not used in any printed literature that we received as it
could have had a negative impact on our group if Israeli officials had known of our meeting with him. The
Israeli government is keenly aware of the BDS movement and its potential.
At our meeting, Barghouti had much to say about the Israeli government. The most striking comment was
“Israel is on a pedestal and no one is holding them accountable”. Barghouti, who lived in the US for 11 years
during which he received a Master’s degree from Columbia, noted that young Jews in the US are seeing diffi-
culty in supporting Israeli policy. He also said “We don’t need charity. We need your support. We need the
US to stop military aide and to end the complicity with the Israeli government.”
Barghouti is a controversial figure in the midst of a controversial situation. His opinions and the stand on BDS
have been seen as anti-Semitic. To this he responded: “BDS is a non-violent human rights movement that
seeks freedom, justice and equality for the Palestinian people, based on international law and universal prin-
ciples of human rights. As such, BDS has consistently and categorically rejected all forms of discrimination
and racism, including anti-Semitism as well as dozens of racist laws in Israel”.
This week’s take away: While the path to peace is long and uncertain, whether here for us or in Palestine,
being humane even in the midst of crisis is the only path to take.
Peace and Blessings,
Mindy Shaffer
