■ Welcome

Welcome to another season of music-making at Christ Church, Georgetown. For nearly 200 years, this parish has served as a center for traditional Anglican liturgy and music — worship that has stood the test of time and which continues to function as a valuable tool for outreach and evangelism to people of all ages.

As the faithful of Christ Church embark upon a year-long celebration of the parish’s bicentennial, I invite you to join us for some of the many

special liturgical and musical events that will take place during the 2017-2018 season: concerts by two acclaimed performing ensembles; a residency by renowned church musician Martin Neary, former Organist & Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey; two services of Lessons & Carols in December (one for Advent and one for Christmas); a Potluck Dinner and Hymn-sing in February; and Choral Evensong, now offered on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month. Above all, join us on Sunday morning, when we gather to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

For centuries, the Church has played a vital role in the cultivation and promotion of artistic and, in particular, musical endeavors — both within and outside the context of the liturgy. That tradition continues here at Christ Church, Georgetown.

We look forward to welcoming you!

In addition to appearances at the Kennedy Center Honors and with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Sea Chanters have performed on Larry King Live and CBS This Morning, as well as with the Baltimore Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, and the Boston Pops. Saturday, 14 April 2018 4:00 p.m. Inscape Chamber Orchestra (II)

Join Maestro Richard Scerbo and the musicians of the Inscape Chamber Orchestra for the second of two appearances at Christ Church during the 2017-2018 season: an eclectic, adventurous program featuring Benjamin Britten’s Sinfonietta for Chamber Orchestra.

Written in 1932, when Britten was only 18 years old, and dedicated to his teacher, Frank Bridge, the piece embodies many of the musical elements that would pervade his later and perhaps more familiar works. The program will be rounded out by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s Nonet (1959) and the humorous Serenata in vano (1914) by prolific Danish composer Carl Nielsen. Free-will offering. Reception to follow.

Proceeds from the free-will offering received at concerts on Saturday, 7 October, and Friday, 14 April, will benefit Georgetown Ministry Center (GMC), a longtime mission partner of Christ Church, Georgetown. GMC guides service-resistant, chronically homeless individuals towards stability and housing through aggressive street outreach, provision of a safe and welcoming environment where everyone is treated with respect, and advocacy for the homeless. For more information, visit: www.georgetownministrycenter.org.

These concerts have been underwritten, in part, by a generous grant from the John G. and Katherine P. Lovelace Family Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation.

■ The Choir of Christ Church Christ Church, Georgetown, is blessed with a rich musical tradition, the primary focus of which is the preparation and performance of beautiful, finely-crafted music for the glory of God and the edification of the worshiping community week after week. Under the direction of Thomas P. Smith, Organist and Choirmaster, the Choir of Christ Church is comprised of some of the region’s finest professional singers. Drawing upon the very best the Anglican tradition has to offer, this group of twelve voices sings a broad array of choral literature spanning many centuries — from plainsong to the works of living composers. The Choir provides musical leadership at the 11:15 a.m. service — Holy Eucharist or Morning Prayer — each Sunday and for special liturgies throughout the year. The Choir also sings the quintessentially Anglican service of Choral Evensong on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month, October through May, at 5:00 p.m. A quartet from the Choir sings at the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist each Sunday. On occasion, additional singers are added as required by the literature at hand. For more information about the parish’s choral program or to inquire about openings in the Choir of Christ Church, contact Thomas Smith:
