Gladewater High SchoolGraduation Requirements

and Programs of StudyBeginning with 9th graders

2013-2014

Part of House Bill 5, enacted by the Texas Legislature, changes the high school graduation requirements for freshman beginning with the 2014-15 school year. This new plan requires students to select an endorsement before entering high school, and have an individual graduation plan on file with their counselor.

The following is a list of the endorsements and courses available to Gladewater High School students. Each plan must show a coherent sequence of courses and many of these are achieved through Career and Technology Education classes. A student may also add performance acknowledgements to their high school diploma.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

STEM: (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) – Students must take Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students will take elective courses that are related to: Environmental Science, Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, and Advanced Mathematics.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY: Students will take courses that are related to Information Technology, Accounting, Construction, Agricultural Science, Communications, Finance, Graphic Design, Architecture, and/or Welding.

PUBLIC SERVICES: Students will take courses related to Health Science, Education and Training, Law Enforcement, and/or Culinary Arts and Hospitality.

ARTS & HUMANITIES: Students will take courses related to Fine Arts.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES: Students will take courses related to Business and Industry, Arts and Humanities, Public Services and STEM Endorsements. Students will take an advanced elective form each of the four academic areas: English, Math, Science and Social Studies.

ENDORSEMENTS

To graduate Distinguished, students must take Algebra II. A student must graduate distinguished to be eligible for top 10% automatic admission to colleges.

A Student Performance Acknowledgement will require at least one of the following: ◦ 4 Dual Credit courses with a B or better◦ Bilingualism and bi-literacy◦ PSAT, ACT-PLAN, SAT or ACT test scores◦ National or International Industry Certification or
