Focus on Learning By Mike Whisler, Associate Principal A Thanks To All That Make It Happen Falling temperatures, falling leaves, and the first snowfall of the season marks the time of year when many individuals take the time out of their busy lives to look back, remember and give thanks for all of the joys which were provided by the quickly closing year. This is no different for those of us at Glacial Drumlin School. This year has brought to Glacial Drumlin School many firsts: the dedication of the new school which was celebrated by hundreds; the first day of school at the new facility; the first dance; the first staff meeting; the first Open House; the first basket- ball game; the first music concerts; and the first Parent/Teacher conference night; among others. Through all of these firsts, there has always been the vision that it is the responsibility of Glacial Drumlin School to build a 21 st cen- tury community of learners where all students are motivated to find their purpose, to clearly see their worth, and to realize their full potential. It is as I reflect upon that last statement that I become conscious of all of the individuals that are involved in making that vision a reality. For it is only through the efforts and talents of ALL of these individuals that effective learning takes place at Glacial Drumlin. So, a GREAT BIG THANKS goes out to (in no particular order) the follow- ing groups/individuals: Each of the above listed groups provides unique services to our school. Many of these individuals provide the “behind-the-scenes” support that allows our teaching staff to go above and beyond. Over the start of this inaugu- ral school year, our teaching staff has been able to enrich our students’ learning experiences with such events as: traveling to and exploring a local prairie; working with students during recess to develop and then perform an “Explorer Play” as an introduction to a new unit; working with the Glacial Drumlin Student Council to honor those community members that have served our nation; or bringing in students from a local university to provide to stu- dents and their families a wonderful night of science exploration (Friday, December 5). Besides these frontline activities, there are also the numerous committee meetings, PTO meetings, team meetings, or other school related meetings, all needing clean and ready facilities, involving discussion and decisions made by district staff, school staff and community members alike. All of this for the benefit of Glacial Drumlin’s stu- dents! So, whether you are a parent, student, staff, or community member, please take a moment as you encounter these individuals and show them your gratitude. Be it a handshake, a smile, or a simple “Thank you,” it will not go unnoticed or unappreciated. For it is with the collaboration and cooperation of all of these individuals that our school is able to provide the high quality educational experience that is expected. school children. Parents will have the opportunity to

meet with a professional to share information about

their child’s development and to ask questions. If you

Are you looking for a special holiday pro-

ject for your family? Due to the tremen-

dous response received during the past

several years, we're going to once again

sponsor the "GIVING” project. Our

school community will be helping out

several families located in both the Cot-

tage Grove and Monona communities.

We know that many of you may already be involved in

a special project of your own through work, school,

church, etc. Participation in the "Giving” project is on a

strictly voluntary basis. We do not want to add any ad-

ditional stress at this busy time of year. Please feel

free to become involved only if you choose to.

The needs of our families will be displayed on the

snowman at Glacial Drumlin School. Our "Giving" pro-

ject will begin on Monday, November 17, 2008. All

contributions should be turned in by Monday, Decem-

ber 8th, 2008.

Check out our updated web page.

Coats, Hats, and Gloves Now that the temperatures have dropped, we request that you remind your student that they need to bring their coat, hat, and gloves with him or her to the lunch break. Students are expected to go outside once fin-ished with their lunch. An exception will be made in cases where the school administration determines that the weather is not suitable for outside activity. Students will be made aware of this prior to the start of their lunch period.

Don't miss the Glacial Drumlin Science Fair

Friday, December 5, from 5:30-7:30.

The Staff at Glacial Drumlin wishes everyone a restful, peaceful winter break and look for-

ward to an exciting New Year!

RRRRed Hawk Overture to Debuted Hawk Overture to Debuted Hawk Overture to Debuted Hawk Overture to Debut

The GDS 7th and 8th grade orchestra, and members of the 7th and 8th grade band's percussion

section, will be performing a new piece by Monona resident Katherine Punwar at their December

9th concert. Katherine, an instrumental, choir and general music teacher at Sennett Middle

School, composed the piece after meeting with students last May. Students were invited to offer

their ideas and suggestions for the piece to Ms. Punwar and she used every idea that was given

to her in the composition that she titled "Red Hawk Overture". A poem written by eighth grader Alyson Norton is an-

other inspiration for the piece and is the inscription on the cover page:

"A fresh new beginning to a new school called Glacial Drumlin. As the red hawks spread their wings, we gently put our hands close to our hearts."

Students have been rehearsing the piece since September and Ms. Punwar has visited their rehearsals twice to listen,

adapt and offer suggestions and encouragement. The performance of "Red Hawk Overture" will be the final selection

of the concert which will take place in the Glacial Drumlin gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.

7th grade trombone players Austin Tomczak and Nick Tonn.

Glacial Drumlin Students Attend Training on Cultural Awareness

On December 4, ten students from Glacial Drumlin School will attend a training entitled, Creating a Culturally Re-sponsive School Climate. The training will be held at CESA 2 in Milton and involves students from area schools. Thanks to the following student representatives from Glacial Drumlin School:

Jadyn Harlan, Desmond Hawkins, Jillian Johnson, Katilin Long, Alex McDade, Amri Moon-Norton, Sakaia Moon-Norton, Jackson Riley, and Samantha Travis

With a tentative starting date of Wednesday, December 10th, Glacial Drumlin staff, par-ents, and community members will begin a discussion revolving around the topics cov-ered in Courageous Conversations About Race: A Field Guide for Achieving Equity in Schools by Glenn Singleton and Curtis Linton. This study group will meet once a month for four or five months in the 5th grade A pod. The purpose of this group is to begin the dis-cussion about race and the part that it plays in the education of students at Glacial Drum-lin School. If you are interested in participat-ing, there is still time. Please contact Associ-ate Principal Mike Whisler today!

Drop off with Student Safety in Mind

Most parents and caregivers drive slowly and with caution while dropping off their children at school near

the main entrance. We appreciate and THANK YOU for being so conscientious regarding the safety of our children.

On the other hand, there are those who seem to blatantly disregard the safety of our children by not dropping off at

the curb, pulling out without looking, not using a parking space while escorting their child into the building, pulling

around the “waiting line” into two way traffic, performing three point turns and driving rather fast for a parking lot.

For the safety of our children, please follow all the traffic rules and expectations and use common sense. While

many drivers may be in a rush to drop off or pick up a student, children are not very experienced at judging drivers

actions and communicating with drivers.

One practice that would be helpful with drop off would be for the first driver in a group to pull up along the

curb all the way past the flag pole and drop off the students on the sidewalk that is not directly in front of the

school door. This will allow more than double the amount of drivers to discharge student’s curbside, ease conges-

tion of those waiting and eliminate drivers pulling around the group and pulling up. If things do not change, it is

only a matter of time before we witness a serious accident either involving a student or staff member getting struck

by a vehicle or two or more vehicles colliding.

GDS Book Study Know the difference between an honest mistake and neglect

Learning responsibility takes time. So don't expect your preteen to grasp it overnight. But do expect him to take his responsibilities seri-ously. And also expect him to understand the difference between an honest mistake and neglect. For example:

• An honest mistake would be adding too much detergent to the laundry. The result might be a sudsy puddle on the floor.

• Neglect would be your preteen failing to put his dirty clothes in the hamper. The result may be a frantic search for clean clothes before the school bus arrives.

Should you punish your preteen if he makes an honest mistake? Proba-bly not. Everyone slips up sometimes. Instead you should:

• Share a laugh over his soapy (or other) misstep.

• Help him clean up the mess (especially if there really are suds everywhere).

• Show him how to do the job correctly next time. But if your preteen neglects his responsibilities, don't ignore the situa-tion. Instead you should:

• Talk to him about where he fell short and why.

• Remind him that he's an important member of the family. His contributions matter.

• Enforce a consequence. Make sure the consequence is related to the responsibility he neglected.
