India launches five foreign satellites

India's space agency launched five foreign satellites, reflecting its ambition to get a bigger cut of the world's $300 billion annual space business.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle takes off during its launch from Sriharikota, India.

The launch also became a vehicle for India's new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to promote his regional political agenda--namely, to resuscitate India's influence as a regional power and to project himself as a champion for neighboring countries, where China has expanded its footprint. In a speech praising the launch, Mr. Modi called on Indian scientists to develop a satellite that would be shared with neighboring nations "as a gift from India."

The space shot's main cargo was Spot-7, a high-resolution earth-observation satellite belonging to Airbus Defence & Space Co. of Europe. It also carried four other smaller satellites: AISAT from the German Aerospace Center; NLS7.1 and NLS7.2 from Canada's University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies' Space Flight Laboratory; and VELOX-1 from Nangyang Technological University, Singapore.

The Indian Space Research Organization's launch reflects the South Asian nation's growing presence as a low-cost alternative for sending satellites into orbit. It follows the November launch of a spacecraft to Mars, the first such attempt at interplanetary exploration by an Asian country.

The launch of the spacecraft, known as Polar Solar Launch Vehicle-C23, or PSLV-C23, took place from Sriharikota in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and marked the 27th PSLV flight. The launcher in September 2012 successfully placed the Spot-6 satellite ofAirbus in orbit.

India's space program began in the 1960s, setting up its first launchpad in the southern state of Kerala and using a local church as the office for its space scientists. The country launched its first satellite in 1975 using a launch vehicle of the Soviet Union. In 1999 India started offering to launch foreign satellites, and so far has launched 40.

India spends 68 billion rupees ($1.1 billion) a year on its space program. It currently has 20 satellites in Earth orbit for communication and remote sensing. The global space market was pegged at $304.31 billion in 2012, the latest available data, according to Space Foundation, a U.S. based research group.

Some critics say India, a country where more than 300 million people live on less than $1.25 a day, should concentrate on terrestrial issues rather than a space program.

Mr. Modi ‘s view are “developing space technology can help India and its neighbors in their collective fight against poverty and spur development. He also urged India's space community "to enlarge the footprints" of the country's satellite-based navigation system to cover all of South Asia.

India "must share the fruits of our technological advancement with those who don't enjoy the same—the developing world and our neighbors in particular".

His call for satellite to be shared with other countries in the region would make India "a part of the welfare" of countries that are members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC, which includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The cost of launching the five satellites wasn't revealed. India's Mars satellite, dubbed Mangalyaan, or Mars craft, in Hindi, cost $73 million. Speaking at the launch, Mr. Modi noted that amount is less than what it took to produce "Gravity," the blockbuster Hollywood movie about space. "Gravity" cost about $100 million to make.

India has used its space program in part to project its technological advancement and to offer benefits such as improved weather forecasting. But in August last year, the country launched its first dedicated military satellite, Rukmini, for gathering naval intelligence amid concerns of a growing Chinese presence in waters nearby.

SBI to open digital bank in malls

The 208-year-old State Bank of India (SBI) is creating a digital bank within the institution in a bid to stay relevant to a generation that's grown on social networks and demands instant gratification. The new electronic banking outlets will be situated in malls and will open accounts, issue cards and sanction loans across the counter.

With a network of 13,000 branches, the country's largest bank has held on to market share as it continued to grow its network. But new private banks are gaining valuations disproportionate to their size as investors expect them to grow more efficiently than public sector banks. "To continue to remain the market leader we have to periodically reinvent ourselves.

Banking today has to be sold, which is why we have decided to be in the malls," said Arundhati Bhattacharya, chairman, SBI.

She added that the bank had looked at successful models across the world, including a Portuguese bank and an Irish bank. SBI's digital banking initiative is an outcome of SBI's mandate to Accenture four months ago. The consultancy firm was roped in to create a sub-brand that would provide new-age consumers a completely different banking experience.
