The Put Foot Foundation, co-founded by rugby legend Bob Skinstad, is one of Southern Africa’s bright charity crowdfunding stars, with £220,000 raised since 2012.
BIG EVENT
One of its biggest events is the Put Foot Rally, an annual 8,000 km trek across South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Anyone can join in, driving any car and taking any route, and with crew names like “The Mavericks”, “Team Lost on Purpose” and “Team Hakuna Matata”, it’s clear that a lot of fun is had along the way!
To qualify, crew members must raise a minimum of £50 and keep raising funds while “putting foot” onto fuel pedals through the southern African hinterland in the milder months of the year. Drivers provide mind-blowing inspiration by running their online fundraising projects from their mobile phones, soliciting donations from their personal networks to support the Foundation’s work.
BIG SUCCESS
Put Foot’s primary goal is to provide needy children en-route with South African-made shoes (16,800 pairs since 2012). Their other aim is rhino conservation, another cause that is close to Africans’

hearts. Thus far, the Foundation has handed over more than £40,000 to charities involved in rhino conservation. While the objective is also to have as much fun as possible, it can be a life-changing experience, for the children as much as the drivers who physically put shoes onto their feet.
The 2017 Put Foot Rally is bigger and better than ever, with over 70 fundraising crews taking part, and more than £65,000 raised already!
SECRET TO SUCCESS
Besides a strong concept, the secret of this campaign’s success is the strong behind-the-scenes support it gives its activists. This includes actively maintaining and growing their e-mail database – and, very importantly, promoting a strong sense of fun, community and purpose.
The question is: can other causes use their example to match and exceed their efforts? More and more causes are beginning to run fun annual campaigns on GivenGain, specifically aimed at individuals spreading their fundraising reach. The Put Foot Foundation raised £220,000 from 213 fundraisers - how many fundraisers can you get?
